  • In this video we discuss what to do if your dog is experiencing neurologic signs, such as loss of balance, wobbliness and acting drunk. There is a long list of many different diseases and medical problems that can cause these types of neurologic signs. The most common reason we see young, otherwise healthy pets being brought into the emergency room for these symptoms is intoxications. Where we live, the most common intoxication is recreational drug intoxication. The most common recreational drug dogs test positive for is marijuana/THC, but we do see urine drug tests positive for other drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, amphetamine, opioids/fentanyl and MDMA). However, there are many different toxins that can cause neurologic signs, including antifreeze/engine coolant (a deadly toxin that requires immediate intervention), certain essential oils (even a small amount of tea tree oil applied to the skin of a dog or cat can be lethal), rodent/insect poisons, and medications. There are also many other medical problems that can cause neurologic signs (including meningitis, strokes, brain tumors, and problems with other organ systems like the heart). It is always best to see your vet (or an emergency vet clinic) right away if you are noticing neurologic signs. Sometimes, referral to a neurology specialist may be needed. Remember to keep all drugs, poisons, toxins and medications out of reach of pets and children.

    3 BEST PIECES OF ADVICE FROM THE EMERGENCY VET THAT COULD SAVE YOUR PET'S LIFE
    1) DON'T WAIT TOO LONG TO GET HELP! If you wait too long, it could be too late. This is especially true for concerns such as laboured breathing, pale gums and weakness.
    2) PREVENT THE PREVENTABLE. Learn as much as possible about dangers that face your pet, such as household poisons, seemingly harmless objects (like toys, clothing, garbage and rocks), other animals, and vehicles. Pets are like toddlers and they need a responsible adult/babysitter to protect them from danger. Puppies and kittens need to start their vaccines.
    3) BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST CASE SCENARIO. MOST IMPORTANTLY, BE FINANCIALLY PREPARED. The cost of medical treatment in an emergency, and the owners' ability to pay for it, is probably the most important factor that determines whether a pet will receive the medical care it needs. The best way to protect yourself is to have good medical insurance for your pet. Do your research.

    My 9 year old chiweenie has episodes where he becomes wobbly and topples over to the floor out of nowhere. During this time, he can't walk or put much weight on his limbs. He is alert though. This will go on for about 15-20 minutes then he will get up and act as if nothing happened. This happens once every few months. Vet said to be concerned if it is happening more often.

      @Delsun Blue It sounds like you could be dealing with seizures, or possibly syncope. There are many different underlying causes for each of those- some are harmless others more serious. When did it start? You may need to get a referral to see a neurology or cardiology specialist. -Dr. Lopez

    My 12 yr old german shepherd started walking wobbly and falling over on monday... Had to carry him... Tuesday he was running and jumping on the bed and wanting to play... Wed he seemed Fine... But again on Thursday hes wobbling when he walks, and then will just fall over and then lay down... When he's laying down he seems in no pain, and has no problem sleeping... He's drinking & Eating...

      @Ike Ikie, There are a lot of different things that could be. He could be experiencing a neurologic problem (such as a problem with his brain or spinal cord), it could be a problem with his cardiovascular system (heart problems, anemia, even syncope), or even a metabolic problem (for example, low blood sugar from insulinoma...). It would be a good idea to get him in to your vet for a physical exam and some basic diagnostics (blood work, imaging if indicated). Best of luck and let us know what they find! -Dr. Lopez

    My 5 year old Cattle dog gets a little wobbly and kind of loses his balance after intense frisbee sessions or even with the ball. It doesn’t always happen but has happened twice now. I don’t know if it’s because he just needs water because once he gets water in his system and a 5 minute break he wants to go back and keep playing. I’m not sure if I should bring him to the vet and get tests done, or if I should cut back his sessions with the frisbee/ball?

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Michael Scott, Has he always done his or is this new? if you are noticing signs of exercise intolerance, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have him checked. Sometimes that can be a sign of problems with the heart or nervous system. In some cases, a referral to a specialist (like a veterinary cardiology specialist) may be recommended. It is often helpful to film the episodes so that your vet can see what you are seeing. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to cut back a bit until you have everything checked out. It might be nothing serious- but "when in doubt, check it out!" Good luck and thanks for visiting our channel! -Dr. Lopez

    Okay my Belgian Malinos acted already acted like this twice
    The 1st time was scary and I rushed him to the vet me thinking that was going to pass and he also peed a bit while lying down. They told me everything seemed normal and I wanted to do the MRI but shits too expensive now a days. :(
    And the 2nd time he acted less but he seems to fight it by running around but it concerns me a lot . I love him and I hate seeing him
    Like that

      @Tony Canales There are a lot of medical problems that can cause these symptoms...really hard to say without testing. You can see that here in Whistler we see a lot of positive urine drug tests on dogs, but other than intoxications, there are so many different things it could be. I would say when in doubt check it out. Pursue testing and referral to specialist of the problem persists or worsens. For everyone reading this, for the record, I also HIGHLY recommend having good medical insurance (like Trupanion) from day 0, for this exact reason. Medical bills can be VERRY expensive, unaffordable really when dealing with serious problems. Hope it's nothing serious! Dr. Lopez

    My brothers dog was in the backyard (my mom was supposed to watch him) my dad started mowing and he got scared and ran around. We don’t know what happened but when he came back in I noticed he was walking like he was drunk and over exaggerating his steps.
    He would sway when sitting up to standing but laying down he seems to be fine. He runs slightly when I force him to go outside (for like a second because he was getting too cold inside)
    I don’t know what to do. My parents won’t let me take him to the vet and his dad (my brother) won’t be home for like 8 more hours. I’m kinda worried he’s gonna die, what should I do? Sorry for the long text

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      xMiss Charmingx Are there any toxins that you know about (drugs like marijuana, tea tree oil, or the bright green liquid that goes in the radiator called antifreeze/ ethylene glycol/ engine coolant). Any patient with neurologic signs should see a vet right away. The worst case scenario is always ethylene glycol intoxication- if that is a possibility, it is fatal if you don't act right away. Get some video footage quickly, talk to your parents and brother again. If your brother is the primary owner, he should be informed of the problem immediately. If marijuana is likely it often will show up on a urine drug screen that can be purchased at the drug store. Hard to diagnose him over the internet, so the best thing is to have him looked at by your vet or an emergency vet hospital. Good luck!

      @Rellzy It definitely sounds like recreational drug intoxication is one of the more likely causes of her symptoms, but there are other problems that can look like this as well. Any time you are noticing neurologic signs (loss of balance, etc.) or any major changes in your pet's demeanour, I always recommend having them looked at by a vet as soon as possible. The middle of the night is often when emergency vet hospitals are the busiest, so even at 4am there is a vet on duty in most cities. I hope she is ok. @TwinTreesVet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anshun Yu wow that must have been scary! Did it wear off right away or was he down for a little while? Is he otherwise very healthy (eating, drinking, energetic, and happy?)
      Well there are A LOT of things that could be (probably at least 20 different things...)- some are serious, some not so much.
      Any time there is collapse involved, then I always wonder about TLOC (transient loss of consciousness) and syncope, as well as seizures and in puppies, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), and anaemia (not enough red blood cells) as well. Suddenly becoming off balance and then collapsing... I would recommend that you see your vet for a physical exam and baseline diagnostic testing if they think it is appropriate.
      Starting at 8 weeks, your puppy should be getting regular vet visits anyway for immunizations and deworming every 3-4 weeks to prevent him from getting deadly diseases like Parvo, distemper, hookworms, etc., so I would definitely not get behind on those and bring it up with your vet when you go in. If he is acting sick or depressed definitely don't wait too long to have him checked out.
      TLOC can be a sign of congenital /genetic heart problems, (for example, sometimes there can be a heart valve that doesn't form properly, or sometimes there can other problems), and TLOC (which can look like fainting) is often an early sign of that. Many heart conditions can be treated with the help of a cardiology specialist.
      It could be something minor or something easy to fix, but just like your car when it suddenly shuts off or starts acting strange, best to take it in to have everything checked out by a professional. Also, if next time it happens see if you can grab a video, and also check out the colour of his gums, and grab a heart rate if you can (I have another video in our pet first aid course that shows how to take your puppy's vital signs.
      Hope that helps and good luck! Let us know how it goes, and thanks for visiting our channel! -Dr. Lopez

    So this hasn't happened to my dog in a while. Probably 2 years but, he would be weak his eyes would kinda be purple and if he sits down he would kinda tip over. He would look really tired. Idk if this had to do with his family but we did not adopt him. He is related to my older dog.

    • @TwinTreesVet
      @TwinTreesVet  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Eleven#NoahDeservesBetter It's really hard to say. It sounds like he could have been experiencing either neurologic signs or syncope (which is usually a blood pressure disturbance associated with the cardiovascular system, like fainting). Glad it seems to have resolved, but it is always helpful to take a video when this happens and get the little guy checked out if it happens again. @DriftingBean There are a lot of things that could be, but it kind of sounds like it could be syncope (similar to fainting). German shepherds can get a very serious genetic heart condition called subaortic stenosis, so I would want to rule that out. @Mitch Wells First- congrats on the new addition and it is amazing that you already love her so much. But-oh my goodness not even 24 hours with the new baby and already learning the cold hard truth about the cost of medical care for pets. That actually happens a lot- we see lots of puppies/kittens in the emergency room for major problems in the first 24 hours of being adopted. Wish you had heard all of my rants about having medical insurance before driving the new pup off the lot... I have seen this so many times! Yes, with neurologic signs there are a lot of things it can be- everything from toxins, infections, congenital problems of the brain/other organs, and many others. Young puppies are also prone to low blood sugar if they are not receiving frequent enough meals (babies usually need to be fed small meals every few hours at first...before gradually increasing to 2-3 x/day as they reach adulthood). I always consider neurologic signs to be an emergency (because the worst case scenario can be pretty bad...) so do recommend that you get her checked out asap. @@TwinTreesVet the answer was very simple when I told my boss about it and that I had to leave to take her to the vet he started laughing hysterically he knew just what it was she I work on potato farm and of course I took pup with me we had been fertilizing the fields it's just a mild foul odor to us but the dogs it can be almost intoxicating making them very dizzy and disoriented he'd clean it a lot of times before and older dog but her being a puppy it was pretty severe now even though it is harmless being food grade fertilizer I'm going to keep her out of the fields until she gets a little older thank you for your concern it means a lot

      @@mitchwells4990 Thanks so much for the update! Yes, fertilizers are on the ASPCA Animal Poison Control's top 10 list every year! So glad you figured it out and that it is something easily fixed! Here is a video about other common toxins to know about, to keep your puppy as safe as possible:

      @Justin East I hope so too!! Preventing emergencies is always better than responding to them, so please make sure that household poisons (like rodent poisons, human medications/drugs, chemicals like ethylene glycol/antifreeze, and foods like raisins, grapes, chocolate and xylitol/artificial sweetener) are kept out of reach of pets.
      Hope your puppy is ok! Good luck!!
