Make a DIY Pet CPR Dummy︱Twin Trees Vet FREE Pet First Aid Course
"How To" video coming soon. In the meantime, here is some raw video footage where we show the inside of our CPR dummy. I believe we filmed this on the first day of Tatyana's practicum when she was a vet tech student. As a rule, we always did a CPR drill on day 1 to check that off the list, so here we are re-inflating the CPR dummy's "lungs" and refilling the "veins" with "blood" for CPR practice. Thanks for your patience:) -Dr. Lopez
You can easily modify any stuffed animal (preferably a dog that approximates the sizes you will encounter) and make a CPR dummy like the one used in our CPR practice videos.
Chest with recoil:
Use scissors to gain access to the chest/abdomen area. Fill the chest area with partially inflated balloons so that the chest recoils back when you push on it. You can use old T-shirts or towels to stuff further to mimic the rigidity of the body. Close the incision by lacing it up like a shoe (using string or a shoelace) so that it is easy to re-inflate any deflated balloons before practice.
For vet staff:
Veins for IVC placement: create veins for practicing (in all of the anatomic places- both cephalic, media/lateral saphenous, jugular) by filling IV tubing with povidone iodine solution (to create a realistic flash when the catheter enters the "vein") and knotting the ends. Secure with elastic adhesive to used rolls of 4" vetrap to recreate the rigidity of each extremity.
Intubatable airway: Use tape (electrical tape seems to not leak) to secure a section of clear tubing from the hardware store (to mimic the trachea) to an anesthetic rebreathing bag. To mimic the larynx, tape two balloons longitudinally across the proximal opening of the hose- this way the airway must be visualized during intubation. The cuff may be inflated as welll.

Here are the 3 best pieces of advice from the emergency vet that could save your pet's life:
1) DON'T WAIT TOO LONG TO GET HELP! If you wait too long, it could be too late. This is especially true for concerns such as laboured breathing, pale gums and weakness. You know your pet best, so if you are worried or concerned, "when in doubt, check it out!"
2) PREVENT THE PREVENTABLE. Learn as much as possible about dangers that face your pet, such as household poisons, seemingly harmless objects (such as toys, clothing, garbage and rocks), other animals, and vehicles. Pets are like toddlers and they need a responsible adult/babysitter to protect them from danger. Puppies and kittens need to start their vaccines at 8 WEEKS (and they need boosters too!) to protect them from deadly diseases.
3) BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST CASE SCENARIO. Have a plan in place, know your nearest emergency clinic, have the ASPCA phone number on speed dial. Know basic first aid training and CPR. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, BE FINANCIALLY PREPARED. The cost of medical treatment in an emergency, and the owners' ability to pay for it, is probably the most important factor that determines whether a pet will receive the medical care it needs. The best way to protect yourself is to have good medical insurance for your pet. Do your research.
**REMEMBER**: WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME TEAM, with the best interest of the patient as everyone's first priority. Let your vet do what he/she does best.
Please remember to spay/ neuter your pet, and to donate to your local animal shelter- they really need your help!
