I'm not sure if the decision to place the statue in the forest was a good idea. On one hand, it could give more attention to the character of Sonic the hedgehog. On the other, it's a unique piece of video game memorabilia on one of the most popular characters of all time that has lost a great amount of value due to damages.
I think that it's definitely possible to restore this guy back to his glory. besides the nose, the sculpt is pretty much intact. so a new paint job and some restoring work on his shoes, nose and hands would definitely make him look much better.
@Wolfgalaxy But how would you get the Sonic & Knuckles decals? They're practically gone at this point. And while you COULD just make new ones, you could just as easily make ones based on Mania.
I want someone to fully restore this thing. Like repaint it and give it a new nose and all that. Then put it back in the same place and put glass around it to protect it and check up on it from time to time. Edit: damn, they did it huh
The glass is sadly a bad idea, it would be broken pretty quickly, and just be a nuisance, and that's IF they even allow it put in. Restoration is definitely possible, as well as regular maintenance, but I don't see a protective case being something that'll be done.

I so desperately want to see this statue get preserved, it's such a good looking one and it very well may be the only one of its kind, which means if we want future generations to see it, preservation is of the utmost importance. It's also a part of the history of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and too often we see important pieces of a franchise's history become lost to time and then eventually become forgotten completely. I don't want that to happen to this statue, nor to any other remaining pieces of Sonic's history, because this franchise is very important to me and is close to my heart, so I want to see it last as long as physically possible, even if it's just in random pieces like this it's better than becoming lost forever, irretrievably gone.
Sonicfan1661 Maybe Sega themselves can fix it and instead of a Sonic & Knuckles sign on the bottom they could put a Sonic Mania sign to promote Sonic Mania (& Knuckles)
Joe Christo Nah, I'd want them to repair and preserve the original paint and decals, if they made a replica to promote Mania I'd be perfectly fine with that. This potentially one of a kind statue deserves to not be altered beyond its original design.
Strange, isn't it? It's like a sign of what the entire Sonic Franchise is currently like: slowly decaying, barely hanging by a thread, and yet it's still possible to save it. Also, in the GG version of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic didn't have a nose . . . . .
To me, that ruins the coolness of it just being in the mountains. Honestly, if it has to be taken away from the mountains, it should be put as close to it's original birthplace as possible.
@@pukmin4498 As controversial as my opinion may be, i'd rather it be recovered then either put it in a similar location to it's birthplace, or be put back.
Jeff Andonuts from Mother bound + Christopher Reid That is what I was thinking and I think what Sega can do is fix the statue and put a Sonic Mania sign on the bottom to promote Sonic Mania
I wonder if someone would be able to purchase the statue and do it up again. Or even if someone from the area came to fix most of it. It'd be a shame to see it crumble away
Damn, there's something so magical about this... It's like an statue of a fallen hero, the only one who was a match for Mario, the great monarch of videogames. After years of fierce battles in the "bit wars" and amazing games, he just couldn't keep up. Nintendo remained victorious, and Sonic fell into the never ending downward spiral of edginess. Gone but not forgotten, someone somewhere will always remember classic Sonic games tenderly.
I hope this can lead to the owners being contacted and they agree to preservation or repairs to halt its deterioration, even if done or paid by the Sonic community. The owners may not even realize how famous the model is and all the work that has been put into finding it over the years. Now the the location has been revealed we should look forward to even higher quality photos and videos.
Excellent video. I would gladly chip in to a crowdfunding campaign to restore the statue. Imagine driving down that road in the snow and suddenly seeing Sonic snowboarding! Way past cool!
Wow, what a state that statue’s in although it could be a lot worse, it could have been destroyed. I love these types of videos, they’re a lot different from your usual type and very interesting. Can’t wait to see the next!
There will be more videos like this in the future, I'll also be discussing other games a lot more since I'm really interest in game design and writing across all games... And I just cannot afford or have space for lots of merch these days =(
@@lombaxalot Yeah exactly it's just a statue too, its not actually real if the statue breaks it breaks, even so the statue will just get stolen anyways, I mean dont get me wrong it's a cool statue and something I would own but at the same time I mean I'm not gonna treat it like a person.
I think this statue represents Sonic's reputation in the gaming industry: Still intact and alive after a long time, but is in the state of almost breaking down and become a forgotten legacy.
I think Sonic should stay there and be a symbol for the people of that area, maybe somebody will pick him up, fix him, and put em back. Sonic belongs there in his very own Green Hill Zone.

Hey Badnik Mechanic! I'd just like to say that I extremely grateful for the attention my channel has experienced as a result of this awesome video. My videos about the recent discovery of the Sega World Sonic and Sally statues found abandoned in a Sydney junkyard have truly boomed in the last week and now I have an army of Sonic the Hedgehog fans demanding more information about their rescue. Once again thank you and oddly enough I did subscribe to your channel because I liked your thumbnails at first and stayed for the content!
This is so fascinating and I absolutely understand why you'd reveal the location, you have good intentions and I personally feel it would be wonderful if someone out there can restore him! He's very special, it would be so heartbreaking for the statue to deteriorate beyond repair. I hope one day I can see this iconic statue in person!
I just want to thank you for sharing this video. While I wish I had ties to this story so I can help or at least find someone who can, I was very surprised on this topic nonetheless. While I don't consider myself a hardcore sonic fan, this whole video, along with the russian gameshow and the alton towers episode, is making non hardcore fans like me learn about obscure sonic history. And the serious overlay to the video is what sold me to this channel's content. I believe giving knowledge is the best gift you can give someone. With it, some major changes can happen and horrible wrongs can be righted. And honestly? I hope someone, out there, who has the tools, the skills and the money to fix it watches this video and realizes the impact it has on fans and the local community. Then they could fix it, and you can be the one to say that you helped fix the sonic statue. And that is a bragging right beyond compare. Your new subscriber, Abby Collins
Wow, this is one of the best and nicest comments I have ever received on TH-cam since starting my channel way back in 2006. I'm just really glad you've found my content so enjoyable that you want to stick around, it really does make me happy that people truly are interested in what I create. On the matter of sharing knowledge, I will be doing a small follow up video to this one in the near future since I've been given some new information and video of said statue, but in terms of wider gaming, I do want to produce some more videos that focus on game design outside of Sonic. So I hope that you and everyone who follows this channel will find those interesting since it'll be exploring game design theory and not just a standard review or critique of something. But again, thank you for this very nice comment!
Re: the impact it has on fans - Sonic is an important symbol for us and therefore wherever we see him, we want to see him in good condition. Honestly I could have lived my life not knowing there was a Sonic statue there, but now I know he is there I want him to be in the best condition possible. As for the local community, I doubt very much anyone there cares about Sonic or his statue, otherwise it wouldn't have fallen into disrepair. Sonic is more popular in the west than in Japan, being largely designed to appeal to a western audience in the first place.
The mystery: THE SONIC STATUE ON MOUNTAIN! (me and people that saw binding of isaac/BIGGEST EASTER EGG EVER): eh a little big but not too much. so... WHY NOT
In my humble opinion, I think that this statue should either be: 1) Left in its current place but regularly restored OR 2) Placed in a video game museum But this is just my humble opinion
It would be really cool if the statue could be saved by someone. However if they have to move it to do that I hope they move it back into a public area after (where it is now or too a museum), things like this should be seen by many not just a single person.
Hahaaaa I remember this statue mystery way back, good ol Soni village lmao Crazy how its location and proper documentation of it has been revealed after all these years! Really cool video Dave, keep it up man and do crying out loud, take care of your hands man
No, but due to the shape, the area closer to his face is likely to rust first, which would make it much less stable. A stick, an animal, the nose's own weight, etc. Could knock it off if the base rusted first.

(me and people that saw binding of isaac/BIGGEST EASTER EGG EVER): eh a little big but not too much. so... WHY NOT
In my humble opinion, I think that this statue should either be:
1) Left in its current place but regularly restored
OR
2) Placed in a video game museum
But this is just my humble opinion
It would be really cool if the statue could be saved by someone. However if they have to move it to do that I hope they move it back into a public area after (where it is now or too a museum), things like this should be seen by many not just a single person.
Hahaaaa I remember this statue mystery way back, good ol Soni village lmao
Crazy how its location and proper documentation of it has been revealed after all these years!

Sonic has always hated when his mommy would say "i got your nose!". Now, he sits there suffering in memories of his parents.
"[The nose has] either been broken off, or worn away due to time"
Come on dude. It isn't just going to spontaneously evaporate down to a nub.
No, but due to the shape, the area closer to his face is likely to rust first, which would make it much less stable. A stick, an animal, the nose's own weight, etc. Could knock it off if the base rusted first.
@@BitchCookie Exactly. So pretty obviously it was broken off.
@@AstroTibs I see what you mean, but if it were just broken by wear and tear rather than a person, I wouldn't really consider it being broken off over just worn off.
