  • Spaceballs - State of the Art was one of the most memorable demo's to come from the Amiga Demo Scene, It was hard to believe a home computer from the early 90's could pump out something like this on 1 Floppy disc.

And that's Why Amiga can't be forgotten, holding on a 880 KB floppy disk without any loading time. It still incredible !

Imagine this guys, i bought my Amiga after i saw this demo! That time, I went to computer room very often after school, to use a PC 286, with a hercules (black and white) monitors, and a pc speaker (beeper) setup. And one day my schoolmate bring an Amiga (A500) to the school, and start this demo on the TV in the classroom.... that was a WTF moment for me, i even couldnt imagine there is a computer that able to do like this! Few months later, i did collect enough money to buy my first Amiga (Amiga 600) and replace my C64 at home. Never regret! It was an amazing machine in her time! AMIGA FOREVER

Not the most breathtaking demo I have seen on this machine but for sure it does rock! I was lucky enough to be in Aars the day it was released and bumped into lil' Lone Starr, the coder, who handed me a signed floppy numbered #70 - no Amiga to boot it up so grateful for this channel to watch it back. Great entertainment! And yes, I still have the floppy.

    NOTE:
The minimum requirements to watch this are:
    A 16-bit machine
    A 7MHz processor
An 880K floppy drive (if you want to store it).

Boy if this don't make your pinky stinky! This brings back memories to tell the trueth.
The dude who coded this demo made it on his own at the age of 16. Music, graphics, animations, everything! The dancing girl is his sister dancing to the music. He shot her dance onto VHS and digitized the dance into his AMIGA. Added some compression by stripping down the video to black/white colors only. Just an amazing demo to tell the very trueth!

This shows the technical abilities of the Amiga, when PC's of the time were making simple bleep..blop sounds, the excellent sceners were making demos liket his one.
Also the music, colors and Dance style were typical of the music on Radio/TV at the time.

@conoba The Amiga used "720K" Floppies (DSDD), formatting 880K (up to 900K with tweaking) - 1.44MB (DSHD) was used in later PCs (where Amigas formatted 1.76M on them).

State of the Art was also notorious for being fairly hardware specific, requiring an Amiga 500 with 1MB memory - the 512KB additional memory had to be from the expansion port underneath the computer, as the demo was coded to use memory in this memory space, rather than request memory from the OS.

I watched this demo on my 1985 Amiga 1000 just the other day. Technically this isn't the best Amiga demo but it certainly has the right mix to make it infinitely watchable and memorable. It's multimedia at it's finest. Best part of all this production revealed the PC (and especially Atari) to be the garbage they were, *still* chasing the tail of a Amiga released 7 years prior with their "MPC" nonsense.

btw, I remember the first "demoes" we had on our Amiga 1000. One was a B/W digitized movie of a cat walking, the other was a 2 disk sample of Queens "Don't lose your head". Being used to the C64 me and my friends jaws just dropped when we saw/heard these things, however mundane it must seem today!. Also remembers the first Amiga virus, the SCA virus - it ruined the custom trackloader bootblocks on a lot of our games. Made it seem like a good idea to write-protect your disks!

I remember this video. I could not believe that it ran on a Amiga 500 using a 880K low density floppy drive. It only took Apple 20+ years to come up with that. I bet they used a hell of lot more memory then the Amiga did. It sucks so bad that Commodore went under. The Amiga was truly ahead of its time. It still is. I just don't understand why Microsoft programs don't make a operating system like the Amiga's.

@MichaelSinz Plus, modern CPUs have more *cache* on chip than all of the Amiga's memory. My desktop has 12meg of *cache*. My development machine where I wrote/compiled/built ROM images for much of the 2.0 and 3.0 OS releases did not have that much RAM. And the hard drive (large 5.25 inch thing, and very costly) had a total of 1Gig of disk, and that was our source code server! (My desktop has 8Gig of RAM!)

Would be sweet to see some 2010 demos from the Amiga. I have been frequenting the c64 demo scene and was surprised, shocked and flabbergasted by what people have squeezed out of the Sixty Four. Amiga has so much more capability and I feel people still haven't squeezed every cycle out of the hardware yet. Although the Amiga does continue to evolve to this day with the minimig and other home brew projects, and it's capabilities extend, who knows what this beauty is really capable of.
