Stop being so hard on yourself Paul Messner. You are never too old to do these multi day hikes. And the more you do, the fitter you get and the easier they feel. Big respect to you pal, I hope it gives you confidence to do some more in future my friend. Keep up the great content
Yeah keep at it. My dad's 60 and drives me mad making excuses he's too old for exercise. If you are finding it a challenge then you probably need it aye 😆
I don't remember pauls channel being about multi hiking? It was about him doing a cheeky overnighter and the kit he took with him in a beautiful location. Or at least from what I always remember his channel. Multi day hiking i cant think of anything more boring personally.
You're too hard on yourself, good sir. It's ok to not be as fast as the others in the group. Pushing yourself to keep up only turns into no fun experience for you or an injury along the way. Take it easy. Me and my friend started going on walks every weekend and walks have now turned into hikes. We do it for our fitness but also because of how good it feels to manage such enormous accomplishments. We are no athletes and take our time but we get there. You are truly inspirational, humble and simply lovely to watch. You've shared some great advice and tips for our own hikes and what kit to bring with us. Keep doing what you're doing. You're brilliant!
Love the part where you both have a chat about challenges and achievements. And hiking pace! Don’t beat yourself up - Andy wouldn’t walk with you if he didn’t thoroughly enjoy your company! What pack is that and have you both got the same pack?
My last proper backpacking trip was in 2017, the year I turned 50. Later that year, I developed arthritis in my knees, which brought my hiking days to an end. Or did it? I've been slowly building back, and your videos have been an inspiration. Heading out this weekend, actually.
I am 75 going on 76 and I am still hiking. Never give up! I am often in the Peak District and have done Kinder 3 times this year (2024). My knees have started to play up, but I intend to exercise them back to health as much as I can. Whatever happens I shall not stop walking.
Just done a 35 mile 2 night 2.5 day solo wild camp and hike in the Peak District. I'm pushing 55 years old and it's a first for me. Loved everything about it apart from the blisters. They were down to a bad footwear choice. Thank you for sharing and the inspiration! I'm assuming night two was somewhere near Outer Edge.
Wow, that's a wonderful sight. It's like a scene that reminds me of the alien planet. The square rock on the hiking trail is unique. The sound of raindrops falling on the tent made my ears happy. Friend, thank you for inviting me to a wonderful place 😄 💕 😊 🙏
No two humans are the same. Even at my most fit, I had trouble with inclines. (Having come from flat land, maybe not surprising) I could run, bike, cross-train-but put me on a steel hill and it was huffing and puffing all the way. The older I get the more I realize that it’s the journey-not the pace. It’s not a race. There will always be someone faster, fitter, better-SO WHAT! You did it! And I am super impressed and proud of you.
Really enjoyed that mate the slightly different take on some of the filming worked really well top stuff..don't be too hard on your'e self either you did a great job its a tough route we did across some difficult terrain & you still beat me to the cars ;-).. im sure you enjoyed that beer lol..hope the aches & pains have eased..tfs pal..
Being short and stocky myself, I always was jealous of the tall guys in my unit with their long legs. A 35 mile hump with packs and gear was a stroll for them, while I literally jogged the entire way. No sympathy in the Marines though, you're there, you do it and congratulate yourself upon completion. You're doing and have done what a large percentage of the other hikers/campers haven't, and you tacked on a few more miles running up and down for your camera. You deserve two beers!
Love the look of this walk, I'll add it to the list! Completely with you when you spoke about feeling the pressure of keeping up. I much prefer solo hiking now and getting into my own stride, loads more enjoyable. Great video 🥾
Hey Paul, if you're struggling with knee pain with these hikes it may be that your glutes are a bit weaker/inactive but age may certainly play a role. I find that doing light glute exercises *regularly* like reverse lunges or glute bridges takes the stress away from the knees and loads the weight onto your glutes/hips instead. Hope that might be helpful!
I couldn't do 39 miles. So be proud of that. Also, please take care of your mental health. Being happy is important. You seemed happier when doing a job, and doing wild camping/hiking in your spare time for fun. This is how your channel grew. Take care paul, remember to take care of you too.
Love it Paul. Do you have those moments, in the first hour or so, of 'why the hell am I doing this to myself (again)? The means (and the pains) justify the ends. Great video mate 👍 Just to add - what a spectacular walk, brilliant effort; so much respect for your self awareness of your capabilities and determination to carry on and enjoy the journey. Hi Paul great video the three of us bumped into you on your walk up to snake summit great to finally meet you in person and keep up the good work and upon meeting you both I’ve also subscribed to Andy’s Chanel keep up the good work as they not only great viewing but very educational thank you
Nice little adventure in some testing conditions! 2 nights/3 days is a nice amount for me as well. That water looked especially peaty 😆 thanks for sharing, including the walking past the camera and retrieving it 💪 cheers
Taking on a multi day hike after not doing one for a while can be exhausting. The feeling of accomplishment when you're done is so good! It might feel difficult while in the process of completing the trip, but at the end of the day you won't regret stepping up to the challenge. I live in the US, but I love watching your videos because I enjoy seeing terrain in other parts of the world that I've never explored before. A great effort and well done. Need to be careful not to overdo it though if you’re having troubles with your knees. I overdid thing myself, carrying too much weight on boggy ground and then going out again with a heavy load before I had fully recovered and I ended up with a torn miniscus. Doctors don’t advise surgery due to risks of arthritis and now 20 months later I’m still waiting for it to fully heal.

Fantastic Paul, thank you for getting out there and putting in the effort to bring us this great video. I watched both yours and Andy’s videos and it’s great to see the different styles on the same walk.
With all those unnecessary cairns there I would say that it is messy. So much for leaving the place as you found it. You are being to hard on your self Paul. I'm 74 and still out there in the mountains of NZ climbing up to 2000 M with 20 kg. Not bragging just saying age is not a barrier, go at your own pace. I've slowed down a bit over the years, but what I have got is stamina, and I watch the young ones burn them selves out before we get to the tops. Nice route, done most of it in parts never thought of doing it as a loop! Its a tough old slog alright, since doing multi day hikes, i have a new found respect for people doing things like the C2C or CWT
Brilliant Paul, what an enjoyable video its certainly a great hike. I enjoyed your little chat with Andy, very interesting. My knee is bad at the moment but as soon as its better I'm doing that. All the best Paul. Thanks. 👍
Well done Paul. Those slabs to Brown Knoll are a fairly recent addition, it used to be just a VERY boggy path where you could sink in up to your knees in places. That was grim!
Good to push yourself Paul every now and then. 39 mile. Dude that's hiking some great terrains. The night stops are strange places to sleep. I guess on a clear night it may have been more terrific I imagine. Yes the rain, the wind kept you stressed. You done it along side your mate good job men:) From Craig.
That was some achievement, you made it well done, my days of doing that are gone forever I'm lucky to be able to do 100mtrs now I even started breathing heavily as you were going up the hills. Thanks for sharing.
I love to watch Andy’s version and then your ,you get two great perspectives. Great mini adventure well done challenging terrain and good daily distances walked. 😁👍
WELL DONE MATE!!! We always used to walk behind our slowest on our yomps. The person will still do their best, probably better as their soul isn't as destroyed. (you can always push a bit if time is tight etc) but afterall if you're all together then that's how it should be and planned as such time wise. Small tip, neither of you use your walking poles efficiently either accending or descending. Definitely something to look into. Thanks as always for the videos and best wishes for the next adventure
another great video paul, good to see the trangia out, its so light and ideal for the multi day hike. be proud of your achievement mate as 39 miles would have felt like 100 miles with all the gear to carry am sure.
I really enjoyed this perspective of hiking. It’s very easy for people to hide the truth or show a narrative that isn’t the truth. Takes a brave man to say he isn’t perfect.
Well in lad, top video! I walked around bleaklow in the rain a few months back and that terrain just zaps the life out of you. I was blowing out my arse and im just under 30 and did 4 years in the army. Dont be so hard on yourself, you're not slow or unfit, Andy is just a freak of nature hahah
First time on Bleakow i said to some friends "it reminds me of the north moor of Dartmoor but more rugged which is where I grew up on ". That was in 72 , I was up there again in 96 and yes the slabs made the walk a lot quicker and easier.
Paul, the last couple of weekends I've done day walks on Bleaklow & Howden Moor it's tough going without a decent path to follow, so good effort & the bonus is you don't have to do it again. ATB Rob
Hi Paul. Just got back from my first 3 day solo camp in the mountains. It was beyond exhausting, I could barely move at the end tbh, but I'd been watching your videos and it definitely helped me prepare for it! thanks mate
It’s not supposed to be easy! That’s the fun and the challenge of what we do. It’s not a race, I must admit I do yomp it a bit when I’m on my own, but I enjoy walking with others and smelling the roses along the way. I’d class myself as pretty fit for 41 (I know I only look 30 but it’s true 🤪) but some days are a real graft. It’s the sense of achievement when it’s over that makes it all worthwhile and sends you back out to do it all again. I’m not a big multi dayer cause I’m bone idle early in the morning 🤣, but it’s definitely something that I’d like to more. Looks like you both had an amazing time 👌🏼
Tbh I enjoyed seeing you putting yourself through that.its so different to easy 1 nighters.although keeping up with Andy would be difficult for most people.atleast now you have a base level to either just stick with the easy camps or push yourself to do more and use the kit you buy and what it's intended for.
I’m doing a multi day hike in the Lake District soon. Honestly I don’t want to hike 15-20 miles a day. I’ll be happy to do 10-12 and spend more time having lunch, looking at views and the end of day camp. It’s meant to be fun not a chore!!!!
Great video, really enjoyed this one, I hope you are up for more of these kind of videos not that I don't appreciate the effort you put into your review vids but this one really hit the spot for me and has got me fired up for a multi day trip myself.
3 days 40 miles over that terrain …. Ouch !! On the porridge make a liddl reflectix pouch/ coozie pour in the hot water mix and slip it in there and wait ten minutes you’ll have piping hot perfect porridge👍👍 great video as always Thsnks for sharing your journey 👍👍
You'll allways get a like from me Paul, another cracking vid. Yes multi days can be very testing on the fitness but your a trooper mate and you nailed it. Classic case of hare and tortoise. That is a classic walk and a real tester on the fitness. Well done mate.
Thanks Paul for all your great content! Such brilliant views! Ps the quality of these videos has really improved over the last year I’ve new watching. Keep the good work up mate 👍
Those slabs are placed there not for your comfort but for conservation, after an army of hikers have passed thru the bog the erosion devastates the terrain, an army can pass over the slabs and barely leave a trace. I was impressed with all the stonework around the top of the hill. And the little and not so little piles of stones? no longer cute, just my opinion. knock them all over and spread the stones around again. I do enjoy your videos and appreciate the effort you put into it, especially showing yourself slogging up a hill, knowing you will then have to go back down to retrieve the camera and do it all again So much backtracking. I'm sure most people don't see that part. Andrew. (In New Zealand)
Thanks for the video and hello from Finland! Great views you got there! I love to hear about the gear you use but I would also love to see you do these multiple nights trips. You could also tell a bit about the geology etc. It seems so different from what I'm used to see here. For example those stones you filmejä how/why they are formed and when. I'd also love to see you film a hike trip in Finnish Lapland one day. We have many beautiful National Parks here. 😉 Just keep doing what you do, it will get easier the better fit you are in. I'm middle aged myself and I wish to have many years ahead of hiking/camping. 😊
I've just finished the coast to coast I would 100% recommend it is hard don't get me wrong but the views of the lakes the Yorkshire dales and Yorkshire moors are beautiful.
Great video and to be perfectly honest for a big lad Paul I would definitely give yourself a pat on the back instead of knocking yourself... I mean just shy of 40 miles in 3 day's that's awesome dude. Hats off to yer 👏
Hey Paul. Great video and even better effort put in there. Psychologically it is no mean feat to be playing catch up all the time but you gritted it out. Am sure that beer was downed pronto!
A good video to watch as it has made me aware of a trail I should perhaps do, having in recent months covered the trail in different hikes over different days.
Honestly, well done. You have accomplished a great walk, learnt about your pack, about yourself and will be so much better prepped for your next one. Give yourself a pat on the back, reflect on the journey and plan your next. If you're in the southern uplands give us a shout :). Once again well done mate.
Such a great adventure Paul. The scenery out there is stunning. Looks like a decent and nice outdoor experience. The camp looks rock solid and cozy ;) Stay safe out there.
Great video as always Paul, really appreciate what you do and the manner in which you do it, thanks . P.S. at 27:51 i noticed the sooty pot, not sure if you know- if you add 10 percent water to your spirit it will help with that... sounds crazy but it works

Well done fella : that stretch from BL H is a real killer no paths just graft 🤣 👏
Looked a cracking outing! Good to see you and Andy together, at least one person I can understand in the video 😉😂
Well done 👏 Paul.
Great video! I'm heading to the peaks soon and you have given me some inspiration on places to visit. You have gained a new subscriber 🙂
Awesome workout paul . Great views and so cool to have you're own personal trainer. Well earn beer there. 👍
you need the slabs on Brown Knoll, its just a bog i camped up there the other week after that dry spell and it was still a boggy mess
❤️ another great video! Looking forward to next big hike.. learn so much from these
Great video and to be perfectly honest for a big lad Paul I would definitely give yourself a pat on the back instead of knocking yourself... I mean just shy of 40 miles in 3 day's that's awesome dude. Hats off to yer 👏
Really enjoyed this video, only an hour away for me. Walked most parts of that route but certainly not all together like you have. Well done.
Hey Paul. Great video and even better effort put in there. Psychologically it is no mean feat to be playing catch up all the time but you gritted it out. Am sure that beer was downed pronto!
Some interesting conditions for it, looks a great walk and well done for completing it.
Great Job Paul! Super video. Deffo one I’d love to get done.
Great effort, well done Paul. That made for a great vid👍👍
Such a great adventure Paul. The scenery out there is stunning. Looks like a decent and nice outdoor experience. The camp looks rock solid and cozy ;) Stay safe out there.
Marvelous country, inspiring video. Cheers.
Great video! To take it to the next level, get in shape!
Superb vlog both , really enjoyed views and commentary 👏🍺
Great video as always Paul, really appreciate what you do and the manner in which you do it, thanks . P.S. at 27:51 i noticed the sooty pot, not sure if you know- if you add 10 percent water to your spirit it will help with that... sounds crazy but it works
