One thing I disliked about Penguin was how well liked she was by Gotham's high society. Normally Penguin gets into crime since he's an outcast and during his career and when he's interacting with other socialites, he's tolerated at best. Everyone liking this Penguin is really weird when there have been less bird looking versions who were still considered an outsider in high society.

The biggest barrier to entry for me was that a lot of dialogue is exposition-heavy where characters announce how they feel or what's going on. I can't really put it into words, but the biggest example of this was when Penguin is talking to her sons and henchmen and monologues to them about her whole plan. Which is a weird thing to do because everyone in the room at the time knows what her plan is.
Also, this Batman is okay. My gripe is he doesn't nor does he try to steal every scene he's in. He's kind of passive for a titular character.

Good review. Like the focus on the time period in the review. Have you seen My Adventures with Superman? Just thought since had similar history of being revealed several years ago with nothing but an image, then a show dropping. And compared to this show, I think that one turned out much better imo.

What does annoy me about the show is the stiff animation. Animation is such an exciting medium yet a lot of modern 2D animation, especially Amazon animated shows, do not use cartoons to their limits. I don't want to add stress to animators, but I feel a lack of impact in a lot of the action which classic BTAS did so well in comparison.
It kind of feels like the animators didn't enjoy animating this? Which is a VERY presumptious thing to say, but there's little flair in the animation only in the designs which do all look good imo. For example, you can tell animators have fun adding impact to important Invincible fights but in comparison this show just had a very standard feeling if that makes sense. I don't know, maybe it is a style choice but it just doesn't enthrall me.

As someone who finished the series I did enjoy Caped Crusader but I do feel it was fine. I mean I did enjoy it but besides a few episodes I wasn't completly unimpressed.
I feel because the show had only 10 episodes it had no choice but to follow that formula. I'm sad the series couldn't flesh out more but at least it tried to.
I was disappointed the animation was slightly limited, some of the villains were incomplete, and I do feel the later episodes feel too rushed. Overall while it may not he as memorable as BTAS at least it was different and did its own thing. That's something appreciative and proud of.

I really understand the point about modern sensibilities, if they didn't want to go into that fine, I get it. But I really think a story that involves Gordon fighting bigotry and corruption could've been really good, and the discrimination the Gordons and Montoya would've faced in the legal system would've definitely made Batman's extrajudicial justice that much more vindicated.

I mean Gothem has always been the most corupt city in DC's america irt's kind it's thing... Which as far as I'm awaer the OG comics never tackled racesim aginst Blacks... Like I'm sure Superman bruaght Hitler in becuase he was evil not that he was racsit... I don't think the halocost was mentioned at all.. Not that it could because that story came out before WW2 was over and we only really nknew what happened when we had boot on the ground in the camps they were that well gaurded of secerts. So yeah about the biogotry what biogoty? an coruption how? Like it won't be satfing becuase Gothujm can't be free of that in Fact the US IRL belives that haves some cooruption is a good thing becuase you can't get it down to 0.

While I wouldn't say this series was amazing or did anything too groundbreaking with he character of Batman, I still had a good time with it and enjoyed all the new interpretations of classic Batman villains and some characters, as it's not trying to be BTAS but still honours the legacy of the show. I liked this shows take on Clayface, Harley Quinn, Onomatopoeia, Two Face, Gentleman Ghost, Nocturna etc...
I do think Hamish Linklater does a pretty solid job as this new take on Batman and while he's not trying to be Kevin Conroy, he's doing his own thing with he character and I can respect that and admire his performance.
I do wish the show better utilised the 1940's era/Golden Age tone more and I do wish the animation was a bit better but despite that I can see a lot of potential with this show and all the new takes on classic characters we're familiar with and to see this Batman grow as a character.
I'm interested to see this show's take on Joker and other characters
Overall Id give it solid 7/10

You can make the last point in a way that can't be misconstrued. It's revisionist, it ignores the prejiduice of the time.
The argument against that is that stuff is outside the scope of a batman cartoon. Perhaps they just want to use the aesthetic and not do a commentary.

    • @supernova9361

While not yet in the same level as BTAS and Brave and Bold, Caped Crusader was still enjoyable show, with many references to the Golden Age stories while still being a new and well written take on Batman and his mythology, with potential for improvement in the future seasons.
My favorite aspect of this show is the use of Batman supporting cast and how they all play a role in Batman’s development, showing how they help Batman’s grow in different ways: Gordon and Montoya show him that there’s still some good cops who are against corruption, Barbara and her drama with Harley makes Batman understand the importance of compassion, and Alfred teachs Bruce the value of having allies. Much like Batman inspires the people of Gotham to change for better, he’s also inspire by them to become a better hero.
I also like how the Caped Crusader adress Gotham’s corruption, something from previous Batman animated shows lacked. Sure we had corrupt CEOs like Rolland Dagget and Ferris Boyle, but we never saw political figures or cops as evil (they were usually just incompetent). In Caped Crusader, it never let the viewers forget that, despite the presence of villains like Catwoman, Gentleman Ghost and Clayface, the big enemies are people like Rupert Thorne and Flass and Bullock, just people who abuse their privilegie and influence in the city and manipulate the system, which justifies why Gotham needs a vigilante to be it’s protector

I agree it’s good like a 7/10 it’s good but there are dumb things in the show like the reasons for villains being changed like what the heck Bruce timm you wrote for Batman what is wrong with him
When they say it’s more btas than btas it’s not at all
The animation yeah is not like btas and I get why they didn’t go for the original but if you are saying it’s more btas
Then bring in some of the old writers like dini and riba or even also have Matt reeves write one episodes
I know Kevin died before this came out but if you say it’s more btas even tho they say Kevin was never a thought to be Batman in the show then it’s not more btas than btas because Kevin was not Batman
I love the voice actor for Batman
But if they wanted to do more with the show and do something different then don’t keep saying it’s more btas than the original when it’s not at all
I like the different takes on some things in the show but there are big flaws that make the shows writing go down hill at times and I agree I kinda didn’t like Gordon because he felt naive and stupid he’s aware but he feels stupid to me
