Hey TJ - Best birthday present of the year, thank you. I don't remember Radio Radio being quite a good as you make it sound - but keep that between the two of us. Thanks for you kind words and support, and my own playlist! And thanks to all commenters for the good wishes.
One of my big thrills in life was contributing to Bruce’s website with a transcription of one of his basslines when Duck Dunn died. I still have the back and forth emails from that. I wish Elvis would forgive and forget.
Happy belated birthday Bruce! I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Bruce's bass playing. It is why Get Happy! is my favorite EC & the Attractions album.
Ok, so I ordered Bruce Thomas’ books, and feel obliged to tell everyone - Rough Notes is an amazing book! He was indeed there as a musician at the founding of so many iconic bands! I’m only 65 pages in and my head is spinning! Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Howlin Wolf, Freddy Mercury, Elton John - all starting out! Buy this. It’s an incredibly fun romp through rock coming of age!
Happy Birthday to my biggest bass hero on the planet, Bruce! This is Tim Dever. You and I used to correspond over FB messenger until I left FB in 2018. We talked a lot not just about bass but our world view, on which we agreed on many things. I know you don’t drink but I’ll clink a glass in your honor. Miss our chats and good on ya, buddy!!
I made my channel with bass covers for the same reason, i learned to play by myself and watching people play covers on youtube, i've learned alot of songs from you per example. And i decided to made a channel to record songs that i want to learn/hear my bass on it. Thank you for doing what you do and you're a really great person. The masks are super amazing and the basses you use are always a nice treat to hear and see, the vintage ones, the tones are always on spot and your playability is top notch. Great to have known your channel when i started playing bass!
Bruce is definitely one of my all time favorite bass players. Bruce T, Geddy, Chris Squire, Dave Hope, John Entwistle, Bruce Foxton, Mike Mills all shaped my own bass playing. You do such a wonderful job bringing all these bass lines to life and really showing how much a bass line can make a song shine. Love your channel and your playing Troy!
Sounds like a great list of influences you have there, and we have a few in common. I thanks so much for the very kind words, I appreciate them. Take care!
Great cover! I’ve been a fan of EC AND Bruce’s playing since I bought Get Happy in 1979. The bass is like the lead guitar throughout that album - check out B Movie!!! But your playing is superb. Those triplets are something Icant yet manage…. But thank you for doing this! I will buy Open Road as well.
Happy pre-anniversary Troy! Thirteen years & still going strong. The amazing thing about your videos, is you never know what to expect? But no matter what you decide, it's amazing! I am a HUGE Elvis Costello & The Attractions fan. Been a fan since 1982, when my college room mate turned me on to them! "PLUS, I learn what I've been doing wrong on the bass line in these particular songs!" Thanks again Troy, have a great rest of your week... ✌
Thank you for all of the videos, Troy. You are one of my favorite bass players. I think you hit the nail on the head by saying bass doesn’t have to be super complicated to be great. Everyone hates on people like Gene Simmons, but I’d rather listen to KISS than a band like Weather Report any day.
brilliant thanks for that troy! been playing the eighties stuff since it was in the charts and bruce thomas and grahame maby still my favourites. oliver’s army still one of our most requested songs too, which is good for moi because grooving through that bass line never fails to make me smile😊👍
Though you hate it I always enjoy listening to you talk lol. A friend of mine also had a birthday the same day. It was a fun party and I actually got to play live which was the first time in years. Nice chops as always Troy.
Thank you. Bruce came up with so many unbelievable bass-lines, didn’t he? I’ve actually got “New Lace Sleeves” off to the side and it definitely was a challenge. I’d be happy to upload it if you think it might help.
Btw, at the R&R Hall of Fame, EC was asked whether there might be too many musicians who have been inducted. His reply was “Well if it’s too crowded, I’d be happy to leave - as Long as Mr. Henley leaves with me.” 😂
Brilliant Troy! Bruce is a true Bass legend, and you yourself are certainly in no one's shadow mate. BTW Bruce hails from my old hometown of Stockton-on-Tees, he also attended my old school, though many years before me I might add.
So cool - we are KINDA on the same wavelength - I've been redoing my SQUEEZE bass vids (The Squeeze/ Costello "connection") Maybe collective consciousness. Maybe not 😲
I hate to sound vague, but every song is different. Learning the song is just the first part. The tedious work comes when rehearsing the song to the point where I can play it straight through without making any glaring errors. Even with a "simpler" song, that can take some time.
You can play root and fifth and call yourself a bass player - or you can play like Troy and his heroes. I’m not sure I can find an adequate superlative…!!

Thanks so much Bruce. It’s always a treat and a thrill when you stop by. I’ve got to pick your brain about “Girls Talk” at some point.
@@TJH3113I Suggested Girls Talk to you

It’s quite a sad thing when outstanding collaborators let personality issues get in the way of the results we know they’re capable of.
Mine too!
Happy Birthday to Mr. Thomas. Amazing song with active bass playing, indicative of Costello's catalog for sure. Cheers guys
Many thanks!
Happy belated birthday Bruce! I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Bruce's bass playing. It is why Get Happy! is my favorite EC & the Attractions album.
Happy birthday Bruce! Such an iconic moment getting banned from SNL for playing this song instead of what was "planned" 😂
He did Exactly what Hendrix did on the Lulu Show back in 1969
@@alexmacleod3728 I forgot all about that!
Truth!
Happy Birthday to Bruce. Elvis has a Canadian connection 🇨🇦. He's married to our very own Dianna Krall. Thanks Troy!
And they have three ( or two ) children.
Very cool. Thanks!

Hi Tim Dever - I was actually thinking about you the other day - one of my FB friends then we kind of stopped conversing. I'm still here!
Bruce is one of my favorite bassists as well. Incredible player!
Mine too! While he was not an early influence for me, he has become a major one over the last 12+ years..

Impressive as always! Thanks for covering another Bruce Thomas bass line! One of my favourite Costello tunes!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it!
HAPPY Birthday Bruce Thomas!!!
The first EC/BT song I ever heard, like a lot of us on SNL before he got banned for 15 years. Great job Troy! Happy birthday Bruce!
Very cool! Thanks.

Very nice of you to say... I still hate it though... haha. Wow! That's so great... I hope it rekindled something. What did you play?
@@TJH3113 I kept it simple and did an STP and a White Strips song.
Happy Birthday Bruce and so many thinks to you Troy for keeping the flame alive for one of the greatest bass players ever.
Excellent!! Thomas and you are both phenomenal!!
Thank you very much!
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also happy birthday to Bruce 😊
Thanks you Amin!
Great song and playing! Cool to know you know him!
Truth!... and thanks!
Fantastic!! I love his bass lines - reminds me of Graham Maby. Well done - as usual Troy
Thanks Sam! Me too! Yeah, Graham is my second favorite English bass player.
Bravo to all of it. Huge admiration for both of you, but I think you already knew that. Happy Birthday Bruce Thomas!
Thanks Andrew!
These Bruce videos are unbelievable. I am trying to figure out New Lace Sleeves. I’m sure it’s way more complicated than I think.

It was my pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic, happy birthday Bruce.
Thank you kindly.
Holy sheet, I was just listening to this song on repeat earlier! Amazing bassline and love playing it
Very cool! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Awesome Troy, I’m a huge fan.
Thanks Joe.
Thank you for thirteen years, although I only found you 8 years or so ago when I was looking for tips on playing Living in the Past. Keep on rocking.
It's been my pleasure. Thanks, I'll try.
Hippo Birdie Bruce!
Well played. Sweet tune.
Thank you... Truth!
I love the look of that Westbury bass
Me too!
Great video. You’re the best Fonz. Good morning and have a great Week.
Thanks! You too!
Thank you for sharing this treasure with us, beautifully and precisely played! You have the real feel of this lively bass piece.
It was my pleasure. I thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

Thanks for the kind words! Wow... so cool! I hope they've got a stature of him in front of the school by now.
Goomby enjoys your "library of Alexandria"bass chanel. Bruce would be proudly/hard, etc.
I'm very glad to hear that... thank you. Bruce is a Prince among men.
I would pay for a book on bruce's work from the first 4 albums.
Someone brought that up on one of Bruce's social media posts and he said he looked into it, but EC and/or his handlers would not allow it.
Nice!
Thanks!
So cool - we are KINDA on the same wavelength - I've been redoing my SQUEEZE bass vids (The Squeeze/ Costello "connection") Maybe collective consciousness. Maybe not 😲
Anything's possible!
Ever done or would consider doing Gary Newman-Cars? Simple but pleasant to listen to. Thanks and God bless!
I have not, but I'll check it out. Take care!
👍🤘🇧🇷
Thanks Paulo
Que tristeza que el video no tenga subtitulos
Lo siento, ojalá hubiera algo que pudiera hacer al respecto. Cuídense y estén bien.
you always say your talking bits take too long, but I've always thought they are insightful and interesting!
Thanks for the kind words.
Just out of curiosity how long does it take you to learn a bass part for posting?
I hate to sound vague, but every song is different. Learning the song is just the first part. The tedious work comes when rehearsing the song to the point where I can play it straight through without making any glaring errors. Even with a "simpler" song, that can take some time.
