      Hello! I have a 10 gallon tank with a male betta in now and planning on bringing cardinal tetras. Due to the tank size, was only gonna adopt 6 of them but is it better for them to be in a bigger group or will they need their space in the tank, meaning keep just 6?
      Thank you!!

    Having work as an aquarium store clerk in my youth, it was pretty depressing seen how negligent, careless, and selfish some people can be. You are not buying toys, these are not things, these are living beings with needs beyond flake food and water.

    Great video! I learned after my first pet store fish purchase years that that is not the place to get guidance unless you don’t mind frantically setting up an unplanned tank to separate the “compatible” fish that aren’t or later upgrade to a much larger tank for the fish you didn’t know grew huge. 🤐 Lesson #1 is always do more research than you think you need and only after that go to the fish store with a plan. If you see something that makes you want to change your plans don’t impulse buy-leave and research it. Waiting another day or two will help you and the fish be in a good situation.
    I’ve really enjoyed your videos! Thankyou for spreading the knowledge!

    I had a disaster event with my Zebra Danios, originally a group of six. I wake up to this horrible grinding noise so rush downstairs and check the tank. Four of them, yes four, had swam 'up-stream' right in to the filter powerhead and got themselves wrapped around the impeller. I didn't get any more after that, maybe emotional, but the two remaining, one male and one female, went in to my new community tank. The male was awesome, a little water-puppy. He'd swim in to my palm if i cupped a puddle of water just under the surface. Sadly he passed away, now I have a lone surviving female of five years old. After the male passed away, the female began schooling with my dwarf rainbows!

    Thanks for a great video, in the past l have kept neons, l think l had six, they were very skittish and only lasted two years. I took a chance on them again when l set up my 100g planted tank & added 100 they are an absolute joy to watch, their behavior as a school throughout the day is so interesting and after 6 months l haven't lost a single fish. I know not everyone can have a hundred, but the pleasure from having these fish is multiplied by the number you have, if that makes sense! Paul UK

    Good job and thank you - I'm sure most of your viewers already know this, but it's amazing how many serious hobbiests do not understand how important the numbers can be. And I do understand that your store may try to educate, but hopefully this video helps a little bit too. Then again, there are too many stores that are all about the sale, not the fish.
    And I also have a tank with one of this species of cory and two of that. Usually pick them up at the aquarium society auction when no one is bidding on them. Like Lamont, I look to add to their number as soon as possible. It's a 55g with endlers and corys so they are somewhat happy but they do better when I get some more (and sometimes give their species their own tank when I get enough).

      Yes, I am an actual ordained minister. I carry credentials from a major evangelical denomination. I do however avoid claiming any affiliation because my ministry crosses many boundaries and I do not wish to become embroiled in denominational debates.
      Suffice it to say, if the Bible says something LITERALLY, I follow that. When someone says, the Bible could be or should be interpreted to say ... I seldom take a stance.
      My primary concern is to be an evangelist. I preach Jesus Christ, the Son of God, born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, was crucified, dead, buried, and then resurrected. He later ascended into heaven where He sits on the right hand of God Almighty.
      I prefer not to condemn those that often feel unloved or are unwelcome in traditional churches.

Pet store told me I only needed 1 and later I worked out you need a minimum of 3 of those loaches, been awhile since then and im a better fish keeper now. I've learnt to never listen to the pet store and just research everything. Even the water parameters they tell you to keep them are what they keep them at and often it isnt actually ideal. Best thing is to walk into a shop with the species and needs in mind and never impulse buy unless you know how to look after that species.

    I was given a "rescue tank" that already was way overloaded, and inappropriately stocked. 10gal tank, there was a 5 inch pleco, and a 3 inch African clawed frog along with an African dwarf frog. I took the pleco and clawed frog to my LFS, and kept what was left in the tank. They had all been together for about a year and no massacres. 2 tiger barbs, 1 blue platy, 1 sword tail, 1 Columbian tetra, 1 serpae tetra, 2 corydoras, 1 african dwarf frog, and 3 nerite snails. It has worked unbelievably well. I NEVER would have thought that could work. The corys and the platy are moving into a new tank in like a week!

      Overstocking is a subjective term though. There's a huge difference between putting 3 Oscar's in a 40 breeder, vs putting 30 tetras, 10 corys, 10 otos, and 2 Rams in the same 40 breeder. The first scenario is definitely not enough space for "only" 3 fish even though it doesn't technically violate the 1 inch per gallon "rule". But the second scenario has 12 more fish than the "rule", and is arguably perfectly fine; as the fish stay small, have a low bio load, and occupy different levels and niches in the aquarium. Decor, filtration (and maintenance), and aquascape also have a huge impact on the argument.

I really don’t think of them as cleaner fish they’re just part of the aquarium and they do actually earn their keep which is nice, but theyre just so fun to watch. honestly, though my otocinclus ARE cleaner fish, they are always working lol.

    I raised two 'plain' oscars together, and they were absolutely compatible right up to when they were almost a foot long. We used to take the fish out of the tank and measure it every once in a while, and they actually got used to the handling, would pout for a half hour when we put them back in their tank, but if we offered them food, the pouting session would end immediately, because eating was their favorite thing. When they grew up they started to show some mating behaviors, mouth wrestling, flashing colors, etc, but never was there a ripped fin or scraped -off scale. We lost them in an accident before they could breed, but I never forgot those two. They were more beautiful than any oscars I ever see in a store anymore.

    About tiger barbs. I agree if you have only four.
    I have glow barbs I don't know if that makes a difference but here's my story..
    But if you have six to eight you should be fine.
    I had a problem with four because I was establishing a new tank and I couldn't put any more than that I didn't want to build up ammonia. They were definitely hurting each other but when I upgraded to a 20 20 gallon long tank input total of 7 of them in there.
    They seem to be fine!
    yes they chase each other but I don't see them doing any damage..
    It's been about 5 weeks.
    I also don't see any of these issues you're talking about with tiger Barbs on TH-cam with anything that is six or above.

    Oh my, I think you were in my house looking at my set ups!! THIS ENTIRE VIDEO WAS ABOUT ME!! Of course I am new at this game. I have fallen in love with fish keeping. Currently I have 4 tanks so far. I bought a 5 gallon complete setup and loved it, it contains one female betta. Then I bought a 10 gallon complete set up and I love that one ( it contains two male betta's with a divider). Two were given to me, a 20 gallon with stand and nothing else and a 40 gallon complete set up with fish but no stand (I improvised a stand).
    Problem one, I love the 40 gallon but I "like" the fish in it, I don't "love" them. I had to promise to keep all the fish if I took the set up (I know it sounds silly but I was trusted by this person and I feel like I have to keep my side of the bargain). I have 5 fish in it. 4 Silver dollars about 3 to 4 inches each and a rather large Pleco about 8-9 inches or so. The fish to me are a bit boring to watch. They are scared to death if I come to close to the tank and don't do much of anything. I feel the tank is too small for all these poor fish and wish they could be in a 125 gallon were they have more room to swim. Also the Aqueon 55/75 filter is soooo loud!!
    Because I wanted to have different fish I started to set up the 20 gallon...there in lies the problem, I have a Noah's Arc tank, 2 by 2 these poor fish are in my tank...I had no clue they could be so stressed. I wanted a nice little community tank to watch and here I created a MONSTER!! I feel terrible about this. Can I right my wrongs?
    I have 2 yo yo loaches ( just like you said one is dominant over the other), 2 Cardinal Tetra's, 2 Red and green (whatever) Tetra's which don't seem to think the other tetra's are a kin to them so they don't hang out together, 2 dwarf pea puffer fish (which are looking to get the hell out a dodge!), constantly searching the sides of the tank for the port hole to another dimension. 2 Danio's (one is dominant over the entire tank and the other Danio). One Danio is bigger then the other one which leads to aggression as well as a whole host of other problems. One fresh water gobi who seems to have lost his mind. Constantly going up and down on the sides of the tank desperate to get out.
    For now I am running a crappy filter a Marine land heater and a bubble wand under some large rocks (to make caves and crevices), a glass top, and a make shift light with some Java ferns. What filter do you recommend and what type of decorations can I get to make these fish feel more at ease. I am waiting a large delivery of live plants so the 20 gallon will eventually be a planted tank. Should I run out and purchase 4 more Danio's, 4 more of each tetra's, and more Gobi's???
    I just looked and the poor Danio "pair" have split up, one is banished to the bottom of the tank and the other is swimming (normal pattern mid to upper tank back and forth). Please help!!

      +Destiny's Pet Project Dog Rescue Hi Destiny, My advice is keep what you'd like to keep and do is what is best for the animal. So on the 40 gallon tank. Perhaps if you can find a suitable home for those fish with someone with a larger tank who wants to enjoy them it makes more sense. It's like I wouldn't want to see someone own a puppy, but really wanted to own a cat. Let someone who really wants a dog adopt the dog, and that person adopt a cat, both animals win!
      As for your 20 gallon. If you're enjoying the fish you have in there I would fill out their schools. If you don't love a fish that is in there, I'd say donate it back to the pet store and fill in the schools you do like. If your collection of fish outgrows the 20 you could upgrade them to the 40 gallon.
      As for decorations I'd say that live plants will be wonderful. Make sure you have some decent lighting on there and put in plant fertilizers. Plants make the best decorations in our opinion.

    I have 3 tinfoil barbs and they're amazing!!! Tinfoil barbs are in my opinion the best schooling fish but they get huge so you need a 55 gallon minimum for 3 of them. I have a 75 and oddly enough my 3 plecos and 3 oscars and 3 tinfoil barbs all get along fine. Getting paired up as babies is the trick. If fish that don't normally get along grow up together it makes them less aggressive towards each other

    • @SuperGankBros
      @SuperGankBros 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My eye started twitching when you said 55 gallon for tinfoil barbs and my whole head started spasming when you said 3 plecos, 3 oscars, and 3 tinfoils in a 75. A SINGLE LONE oscar is fine in a 75, no smaller and no other fish. You should have AT LEAST a 125 for those fish, a 180 would be better. Tinfoils NEED at LEAST a 6 foot tank.

    I tend to be very non-confrontational and argumeetivie. Bought from a local petstore (instead of PetSmart) and asked if they had SAE, lady pointed at one and I was like "are you sure? That's albino, do they get albino? I don't see the long line, are you sure this isn't a Chinese AE?"
    Lady said "oh people get those mixed up, this is SAE, it's very peaceful in a community tank"
    I kept thinking she was wrong, but took it home and put it in my tank anyway.
    Guess what? It started bullying my cardinal and xray tetras, it has a sucker mouth like a CAE and not the horn things like a SAE and posted a picture and everyone told me that ain't no SAE.
    Now we can't get him out cause he's FAST! Even putting algae wafer in a net and leaving the net along for hours and come back and he's never near it.

    QUICK QUESTION. I made the mistake of buying before researching. And I'm finding a few items saying that angel fish are capable of aggression. No problem. However I'm just switching to a community tank setup and decided in my 90 gallon I wanted 3 loaches. 2 short body rams. 4 angel fish and about 30 to 40 neon tetras. Plus my giant plecos.... all of the fish other than plecos are just tiny babies. Thoughts on how much aggression and damage one might. Cause the other? After reading into it and hearing this video I thinking I might be lucky since they're so young? THOUGHTS?

    So I have 16 tetras in a 50lt planted tank. There was a bit of aggression at the start but since I added air bubbles and got rid of a cynobacteria outbreak my tetras have become a lot more docile.
    However i still have one that hides in the back behind some plants. It seems healthy enough and comes out to eat. I can't figure out why it's still hiding. I did wonder if it was pregnant as its a female, but any suggestions would be appreciated

      I have 11 black neon tetras on my 36 gallon tank in they school really well. When you are buying tetras but the whole group and be sure they are already schooling. I think a group of 9-12 would be good for your tank.
      You have two options either not get the pleco or be ready to move it into a bigger tank in a year. Most plecos that I know of grow to be about a foot which would be too big for your tank. At the same time plecos are unkillable so it will be miserable but alive fully grown in your tank.
      If you are looking for a statement fish. I recomend a dwarf gourami they do fine alone [and bad in pairs] and are not aggressive. Get the orange or blue one [NOT PINK they grow to about a foot].

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bio load is a result of how much you feed. Whether you have 1 fish or 10 fish, if you feed 4 pellets, the bio load is the same. And thus managing feeding is managing the bioload.

    I had a bunch of tanks, a few years ago. Just got a 75 gallon. It's the biggest I've had yet. Planning a planted, community tank. I was thinking about just two angelfish... I had two in my 55, and they were alright. I'm also planning on 5 bosemani rainbow, 6 corydoras, one bristle nose pleco, 12 neon tetra, and some shrimp & snails. What do you think?
    My plan is to introduce one species at a time, starting with the angelfish. I'm thinking of getting six, to start, and seeing if I can find a breeding pair, then sell the others, or take them back to the store. Then, get like 15 neon or cardinal tetra. I anticipate some dying, it's just a thing that happens...
    Thoughts?

    i have 6 pygmy corys and 5 normans lampeyes. i notice sometimes they will school together. i had always planned on getting more lampeyes anyway, but is this likely to be that stress schooling that you mention? the corys aren't very shy; i often see them midwater, dancing up the glass, snuffling about the plants etc, but does the fact that they school with the killis indicate i should get more of them too? (hadn't planned on it because i would be starting to push it for stocking levels but i'll weigh it up if my fish are under stress!!)

    • @annethornton9938
      @annethornton9938 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much better to have all of a kind, than two sets half the size. Yes, the green neons will probably school with the regular neons, but it will be the difference between surviving and actually thriving, they will feel obligated to for safety, not because they really want to. Personally I won't keep tetras in schools smaller than 12-15; my 25 gallon has 5 julii corys, 15 glowlight tetrats, and 15 neons (had a dwarf gourami that tied all the colours together, but sadly he died mysteriously). I have a single cardinal that is in there, that will often school with the neons, but only because he's the sole survivor out of 12 from what turned out to be a bad fish store. That cardinal stresses out far more easily than do any of the others, even during large water changes, so I try to keep things extra stable for him.

    For tanks with multiple Bristlenose Plecos, what would you determine to be the ideal ratio? Personally, I believe one male and two females would be ideal since the males are typically more aggressive towards each other than are females. What is your opinion on this.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Home Aquatics Well I personally would rather have 2 males and 1 female if I was going to keep multiple in a tank like that, as the male has to sit on eggs and bristlenose are very likely to breed. So the males can get starved out by having to constantly sit on eggs. But there is a lot that goes into what ratios, tank size, availability of food and caves etc.

    • @HomeAquatics
      @HomeAquatics 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Aquarium Co-Op For that setup the male would be separated between batches to allow him to rest and not be over bred.

Ammonia and nitrite is zero and a minuscule amount of nitrate. I guess if water parameters are good it's an okay setup?
