    What frustrates me the most is that our first reaction was "Oh no! Save the 50 people in my inner social circle!", not "Oh no! Let's help the thousands of people in West Africa!" We are so incredibly selfish.

      Of course not, but it seems like our culture has near-eradicated empathy for those we don't know personally.

      Yup.
      I feel like we only decided to help once "we" were in danger. But at least something is finally being done, that's great news, regardless of the motivation.

      Diana Peña I see that, but the point was about the first reaction. I'd imagine that to be how most people feel after they've learned a bit more.
      I get that as a Finnish person it's pretty much _impossible_ for me to get ebola, so I'm not personally worried.

  • @ashtuatara

    I find that people are joking about this way too much as well. There's this kid at my school who is always running through halls and the cafeteria screaming "I have Ebola!" And it bothers me that people are able to joke about something so terrible, that isn't even affecting us much. (Meaning, we aren't getting it) there are also people who say that they aren't going to use public bathrooms or anything because they are scared of Ebola. As far as I know, there is no Ebola in Canada.

    • @ashtuatara
      @ashtuatara 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree. It's rediculous what I hear in the hallways at lunch time at my school, and I hate it. It's so selfish for us to be concerned about the what 3 cases in North America and about keeping those countries away, when they need OUR help to end this disease!

      I agree people laugh at jokes about Ebola, but dont laugh about cancer jokes. I'm not saying they are good but when people say 'people die from cancer' then proceed to make a joke about Ebola or other killers. People die from those too. Why arent they being treated with the same amount of respect and concern

    • @ashtuatara
      @ashtuatara 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, but there's a difference between joking about it, and doing it to cause fear. Someone said that they had Ebola on a plane last week, and they shut it down. It isn't funny to say that you have it if there are people who are scared. But I agree with you that it is good to joke about things.

    • @elizabethleturno9574
      @elizabethleturno9574 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same at my school. A couple kids joke that they have Ebola when they have minor cough. What really annoys we is the kids who are like "F#ck Africa, we should just ban all travel to and from Africa. I mean who would want to go to Africa regardless? lol"

    Sometimes I wonder what percentage of Vlogbrothers videos (and perhaps even Green brothers videos on other, related channels) are themed around the lesson of "We are all one people; there is no us and them, only us."
    Not that I'm complaining, mind you. It's a great lesson that needs constant reinforcement, as evidenced by the fact that many people still need to learn it. And I think it's a lesson that ultimately constitutes a cornerstone of what Nerdfighteria should always strive to be, to live, and to exemplify to others.

      True, Alanna R.. I'd say that "imagine complexly" and "there is only us" are the primary cornerstones of our community. And very heavily linked to one another. We forget our cornerstones, sometimes, and their linkage, so it's good that there are constant reminders.

    Interesting question rises from your last statement, John:
    Should we, or should we not enforce vaccinations? Do we allow some people to opt out because of religious views or should we put our foot down for the benefit of the health of everyone?
    I personally say: yes enforce it.

    • @vlogbrothers

      I don't think we're going to need to enforce ebola vaccinations among the general public in West African nations, to be honest. People will want them, and there will be herd immunity to protect whatever irrational or ill-informed people don't. -John

    • @Koushi82
      @Koushi82 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Shangori...
      A FEW THINGS WRONG.
      there are many weak immune systems that if you give vaccinations they will IN FACT GET EBOLA AND DIE.
      please look up what
      VACCINES ARE first:
      Definition of Vaccines- A WEAKENED VIRUS of the particular strain
      -thus if the virus mutates the vaccine is useless
      weak immune system people SHOULD NOT GET VACCINES EVER unless the vaccine is weak enough for their immune systems.
      in fact vaccines are believed to infect 1% or so of the vaccine population every year
      99% success rate but 1% would get infected from the disease and have complications.
      for those with weak immune systems and Ebola YOU WILL KILL THEM with such a vaccine.
      The best thing to do is to get rid of the disease forever where possible.
      or to bottle up the antigens of those that recovered and killed the viruses to administer instead of the vaccine.
      the cure is-the body immune system producing the cure
      NOT the vaccine itself.
      people need to realize what vaccines actually do first
      as some actually think it is a cure.
      no it isn't it tries to make YOUR BODY produce the cure.
      IF YOUR BODY CANNOT YOU DIE.
      thus best thing to do is to boost your own immune system first
      not just taking a vaccine.
      you still need to be able to RECOVER FROM the vaccine as it makes you SICK FIRST then you recover from it.
      don't forget you are sick from ebola vaccine first thus 3-4 months NO SEX. else you will give others STD's as you are still INFECTED
      and lets see how many men and women can hold their chastity for that long in this sex driven society of ours?
      so if everyone gets vaccine no one can have sex for at least 3-4 months.
      unless of course they want to have the zombie Apocalypse.
      these ebola vaccines are extremely dangerous if not done correctly
      thus word of warning to the vaccine manufactures
      before you clear the patients DNA test their male sperms and female eggs
      or their sexual fluids thank you.

    • @RoseFang
      @RoseFang 9 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I like herd vaccinations; I'm allergic and can't take some of them, other people vaccinating protects me from what I can't do for myself and I am greatly appreciative.

      @acomputer121 9 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Koushi
      You're attempting to make a very good point, which I would agree with, but you're doing it horribly, so you aren't going to get my support, or the support of as many other people as you could.
      As RoseFang said, those who can't have the vaccine are protected by those who can, so if 99% of the population *can* have it, 99% of the population *should* have it. And, eventually, 99% will be good enough, because that 1% just won't be getting access to it.

    • @vlogbrothers

      Henry Nguyen Well, all viruses mutate. We should also be deeply afraid of influenza mutations and chicken pox mutations and rotavirus mutations. A more contagious ebola would be terrifying, but a more infectious influenza would actually be MORE terrifying, because we're (probably) fairly close to an ebola vaccine, but novel influenzas are notoriously hard to vaccinate against before they spread widely. -John

    Thank you for this video John. As a medical student (and a citizen of the world) I have been equally awed by the courage of healthcare providers working to contain this epidemic and conversely disgusted by the media induced fear of the American populace. The health of third world nations no longer exists in a vacuum. There are real consequences for everyone when these nations have underdeveloped health infrastructure. My heart breaks for the thousands of families struggling with loss and illness in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. I sincerely hope the governments of America (and other prosperous countries) will begin to make a meaningful effort to save the lives of people who are poor, different and unknown to us. I hope our collective conscience will inspire the money, coordination and bravery it require to stop this epidemic before it takes the lives of hundreds of thousands.

    Thank you for the highly informative video, John.
    A classmate and I were discussing the Ebola crisis earlier today, with one important point coming up that the New York Times highlighted: people aren't donating to charities involved in Ebola relief. The article attributes this to one of two reasons, though they are themselves pure guesses at the cause. The first is the lack of "visual drama". People can't see what's happening, so they don't respond to it. The second is a lack of clarity over how the money will help, given the lack of a cure for the virus.
    It seems many people are ignorant of the very point you're making here: the risk of Ebola isn't just to the African nations that have affected more severely than the United States and Nigeria, but to all people.
    While we can't reasonably provide the "visual drama" of Ebola to the public, for the sake of the privacy of the patients, it doesn't seem unreasonable that more media focus on how the money will go to help, rather than focusing explicitly on how many people are affected, with a lot of attention going to the three patients in the US. A closer focus on the WHO's plan, as you've addressed it, is perhaps the best first step towards letting people know how their money will help.

    I think there is a difference between the notion of "cutting those areas off" and inhibiting civilian travel between infected areas and non-infected areas. As we have found the biggest obstacle to containing any outbreak is human behavior. People who violate quarantine, people who travel after being exposed etc... I am in favor of inhibiting travel from those areas to our country, but in the context that we also send aid to attempt to contain at the source. After All the best defense is a good offense.

    • @MilesReiter
      @MilesReiter 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's reasonable, but the problem with restricting travel is that you then have no way of monitoring it. Because it's still going to happen regardless of whether you ban flights from west Africa to the US. While allowing it, we have control and can do our best to monitor and track the people who take those flights. If we disallow it, there will be unregulated traffic between countries and it'll end up being way worse.

      I totally agree with your theory, but I don't think it would work in the case of the U.S. As there are no direct flights from the U.S. to ebola infected countries, and all of this travel goes through big international European airports, I don't see (although be welcome to ideas) how we can ban commercial travel without banning flights to London.

I have been discussing Ebola with my brother and he told me it is a much different beast from malaria and AIDS in that, to be contained, it requires complete isolation and quarantine of the patient. The only reason it's not working in the US is because nurses are not quarantining effectively.

    • @hoosierhiver
      @hoosierhiver 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Not true, Ebola is only passed by bodily fluids, if it was transmitted through the air, then we'd be in some serious trouble. The nurses who got infected probably infected themselves when taking off their protective clothing and gloves.

    • @sevenswanson
      @sevenswanson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      hoosierhiver I heard from my brother that the nurses were "quarantining" by taping their scrubs to their gloves. Really not safe.

None of whom live in GARLAND, yet certain businesses near a certain high school (some siblings were on the same flight as a person who was later infected with Ebola) find it necessary to not allow the high school students to enter their businesses & refuse to serve them. Theres only been one case in the UK and he's back to normal health now. I think countries need to do more to help with this crisis because so far the UK is the world leader in aid donation in this case and besides the US it doesn't seem that other countries are doing anything to help those effected. Is the world really that selfish? Are we all blind to what is happening around us? Don't just wait and hope other countries will solve all the problems, everyone needs to step up to the plate to eradicate ebola.

    I don't often comment on things at all, but I just want to, point out one thing, it's not really a disagreement, but just something I want to maybe discuss.
    In this video John Made the argument that making the healtchare systems in the now "infected" western african countries will not only help them, but also us. But I just feel that, one should not need to point that out. Should not the knowlegde of them being in an ebola crisis be enough for the international community respond and help contain the outbreak? Should our own benefit really be the motivation to help people in need? (I'm sorry for any spelling errors, dyslectic and spell check does not work on this computer).

    • @untappedinkwell
      @untappedinkwell 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think, sometimes, when people are scared, they forget the more obvious things--like how helping others helps the world. Since John is talking about reasons to be hopeful (and not scared), addressing that point was an important and gentle reminder for anyone who, in their fear, might have forgotten.

    • @EvilPilli
      @EvilPilli 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      untappedinkwell
      That is a very good point. I guess I just miss a form of international solidarity in this ebola crisis, it's something I wish more people would adress and talk about how problematic the rhetorics used against the effected countries have been these last few months.

    • @untappedinkwell
      @untappedinkwell 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sindre Johannes Taxt Måge Indeed--many people, and even many news outlets have done a poor job of talking about the complexity of those countries and the world effort to help them. I think a good way to help would be to talk about it among your friends and family--pointing out the need for solidarity (or even sharing this video!) might help them understand some of the flaws of the current discussion.
      Best wishes and DFTBA!

    • @adambierstedt920
      @adambierstedt920 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sindre Johannes Taxt Måge People in America forget because it doesn't sell newspapers and programs to say that there has been significant, although inadequate, international aid in West Africa in an effort to contain a disease, and there is no reason to panic over a few cases outside of that region, which have a very high survival rate. It sells a lot better for a news outlet to go "EBOLA! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIEEEE!"
      And now, it's been taken up, and even educated people are being forced to respond to it to quell complaints, which serves to make the whole thing seem worse than it is (obviously in America, not West Africa).

    • @EvilPilli
      @EvilPilli 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Adam Bierstedt
      Hmm... that is what I feel is such a large problem with the American media (and allot of other medias) is it's privitisation. It kind of panders to an imaginary audience. Sure it's what "sells" news, but that's because it's basically the only offer given. Privitation of such an important source of knowlegde often becomes a corporate monopoly. I wish one could create a public system, where maybe once every two years or so, some people would be selected to work on gathering information, preferably based around positivic empirism. To create a free news outlet which was delivered to everyone. It could coecsist with maybe other news outlets, but this one would be delivered to everyone. And with the intention of writing good informative, but also fun and interesting articles to read about everything from international news to new scientific discoveries. Maybe all the articles would have to be jugded by the workers through a flat and democratic structure. Maybe then you could avoid that kind of "sensational" way of spreading important news.
      (Whoah, sorry, this suddenly turned out to be a long a communist brainfart, I apologize for that).

    • @Lotharies
      @Lotharies 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Lumpyrox1412 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The vast majority of people in the US will never come into contact with Ebola and therefor cannot contract it.
