    ** UPDATE!!! I JUST MOUNTED 32.1" 255/70R18 FALKEN WILDPEAK AT3Ws. Check out my instagram post here:
    instagram.com/p/CBTpZ6NpOaz/?
    I'm 99.9% sure you can run 255/65R18 31.1" without modification.
    but... there's not many tire options. You can get the WILDPEAK TRAIL (which is a dumbed down version of the AT3W)
    If you're one of the lucky bastards that went with a 17 inch wheel, you can go with 255/70R17 31.1"
    there's many many many options out there! including the BFG KO2

      I have a 2019 Honda Passport Elite and am looking to get some new wheels and A/T tires so I don't have a bad time on forest service roads. I'm not looking to modify/cut or lift at all, and am not looking to do anything too crazy, but will have an off-road teardrop trailer that I want to tow back to some awesome campsites. My main concern is rubbing, as I'm sure all of ours is.
      My question for you is if I go with a 17 inch wheel like the KMC Bully KM708 (17x8, 38mm offset) and an A/T tire like the BFG KO2, would you recommend a 255/70R17 (31.1" x 10.0"), a 265/65R17 (30.6" x 10.4"), a 245/70R17 (30.5" x 9.6"), or a 255/65R17 (30.1" x 10.0")? I'm trying to avoid rubbing, but would like to maximize what I can do since I don't have a desire to do other modifications like cutting or a lift. I will almost certainly add a skid plate though! :)
      Thanks for the great videos and information!

      Stefano Prezioso the with a 30.5” tire, the rubbing is only beyond 90% lock and is very minimal. It sounds like you don’t want to deal with that at all. If so, avoid the 265/65R17 and just go for either 265/60R17, 255/65R17.

At its closest point during full lock, there's maybe 3/16" of clearance at the tire's closest spot. Thanks for your suggestion and helpful content!

That was only a 30.0” tire. Now that I have all this first hand experience I just want to share what I know. I really hope other people can avoid the mistake I made. Finally got the 3.5 lift kit on my 2020 Honda Pilot. Was able to fit a 32.4 inch tire. Had to cut the bumper a small bit. About an inch or 2 at the bottom. Slight rub on a full turn. Going to post a video about it soon. Your videos helped out a ton.

    2016 Honda Pilot here with 265/60/18 Nitto Ridge Grapplers (30.5" tall and 10.7" wide) and I agree, they fit stock. Actually lifting 2" made it now rub just a hair on that portion you cut. It is so minimal that for now I do not plan on doing any cutting. It happens at near full lock so unless I am doing a U-Turn I never get there. Keep up the great work!

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      REMIS Computer Solutions oh! Interesting! So... I think I know what you can do to stop all the rubbing. Under the wheel liner there will be two bolts. Try unbolting them. They aren’t really there for structural support, since the other 3 corners are welded. Those bolts are just there to connect the beams so the Factory can compete the welds. They’re basically useless now. Take a heat gun and reform it. Might do the trick!

  • @jamesngotts
    @jamesngotts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    One of the biggest reasons people need to get rid of those 20’s is adding rubber between the rim and ground. A bigger tire is better on a smaller rim because when you air down you have alot less risk blowing your tire bead. Also a bigger tire on a smaller rim creates a longer foot print when air’d down which is what actually matters for better traction. Wider tires have nothing to do with better traction, they just look meatier. Bigger tire on a smaller rim will also improve your ride quality on trails.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamesngotts I had two pinch flats when I had my Subaru Forester and that was with 5.8 inches of sidewalk. The oem setup in the passport is only 4.7 inches of side wall 😱. That’s scary!!!! I’d be terrified of airing down and losing even more sidewall clearance. Both Wheels and tires would get absolutely WRECKED on a moderately rocky trail.

    • @jamesngotts
      @jamesngotts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JonDZ Adventuring you should be around 6.8 inches of side wall now which is alot better.
      It’s awesome to see the aftermarket for your rig is growing. Are there lift kits which drop your diffs lower?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamesngotts Companies like Traxda, Jsport and Truxx offer all the basic aftermarket support but there isn’t any “big name” support. Hopefully in time we will start seeing coilover suspension upgrades, better rock sliders, etc.
      Traxda offers a 3.5 inch lift kit. They use 2 inch strut spacers and 1.5 inch subframe spacers. The way these Honda’s are setup, it’ll take good advantage of this lift. The lowest point is the gas tank and muffler. The drive shaft and rear diff sit up high. With the addition of the 1.5 inch subframe spacers, everything but the drive shaft and rear diff go up, but since my rear diff sits at 12 inches, I’m okay with that.
      The only thing I’m worried about is how the subframe spacers will affect onroad handling.

    • @jamesngotts
      @jamesngotts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JonDZ Adventuring yeah the higher you lift the adverse the effect to on road handling, especially with independent suspension setups. It will probably still be very manageable though. Is there any drive line updates or winch/bumper mounting options out there yet?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      jamesngotts I looked, and unfortunately, I don’t see any options or anyone that has a winch on their newer model Honda’s.

    I average about 23mpg across all driving, highest is about 27-28.

    Jon, have you done anything to recalibrate the speedometer to be accurate after larger tires?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron Dail interesting fact, much of the Ridgeline suspension parts are built tougher. Honda pro Jason has a video about it, and I want to say about 70% of the parts are more robust. Just going off of memory. Yes, it’s unfortunate the Passport only comes in 20 inch wheels. These are not what you want to have once you leave pavement and since the passport is marketed as an outdoorsy vehicle, I’d really like to see future models with a lower profile rim option. The good news is that people will spend money to buy 20’s. I had a friend that sold his set for $500 which went towards his set of 18 inch designer wheels.
      As far as the odometer/ speedometer. I just have to do the math in my head. It’s a 6.8% difference. I may go with 265/70R18 tires in the future, which would be a 10% difference, so I haven’t seeked to have things corrected yet.

    I recently bought my 2020 Honda Passport Elite Used.. Initially I was going to buy a 4Runner.. I know the mod market is much larger with 4RUNNER.
    But I got my Passport for a solid deal. I have always loved the appeal of overlanding and having an overlander capable of being a daily driver that gets 20+mpg is even better.
    One mod that I would have added to the 4Runner that I'd want to put on the passport is an under hood air compressor for tires with a hose hook up near the grill.

My question is in regards to the Front Rubbing: Does the Wheel Off-Set affect the amount of Rubbing? I know JSport sells a KMC Wheel that matches the OEM Off Set (55mm) but other Wheels (like Black Rhino) have a 35mm Off Set and I am not sure how (or if) the Off Set will rub more or less? • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      stevendphoto the rubbing in the Passport/Pilot/Ridgeline happens in the front wheel well on the inner back side. Let’s say for example that somebody wanted to fit larger tires that required cutting. The trimming needs to be done 5 inches across and 4 inches high. The Lower back corner needs to be chopped off about 1 inch diagonally. With all that said, my guess is that offset won’t really make much of a difference for 30.5” tires.

What would be the largest tire I can install with out rub and have you had any mechanical issues? I my changed them out with after market 18" wheels. • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Charles, pre congrats on your lift! So, the axle relocation kit will move the tire forward almost an inch. This gets the tire away from the metal wheel well that goes into the fire wall, and puts it in the area of the plastic wheel well near the front bumper. You’ll be able to fit a 32.1” tire, something like a 255/70R18, or a 31.6” tire like a 265/65R18. I think Greg from Traxda has a video where he mounted 285mm wide tires. He had to use wheel spacers because the very wide tires were hitting the subframe at steering lock. I just don’t see a reason for the extra width, added tread is so much heavier than added sidewall, so I would not recommend going past 265mm width

      Stock setup will rub the least unless you get a 3.5 inch lift kit. The 2 inch lift will cause the most rub, you either have to have the center hub of the wheel under or above the pinch weld.

      Those tires will fit without a lift with slight rubbing at 90% lock. I don’t think the lift will make a different to be honest. You’ll have to lift your vehicle 3 inches of more to get off the center line of the wheel. Btw, I love my 3.5” lift 😃. About the same stress as a 1” inch lift, but over 3 inches of real gains.

      They have the "trailsport" trim. The stock Midsized Hondas already had the best gearing with the ZF9. The newer 2023 Honda Pilot now have the Honda 10 speed with a 22.7:1 crawl ratio, the most aggressive single speed transmission made so far. They all get it though, not just the trailsport, and I respect Honda for giving all their trims above average capabilities. The 2nd gen iVTM4 vehicles (2023+ Pilot trailsport, 2024 Passport/Ridgeline) do have an upgraded AWD system though and are engineered to take on moderate 4WD terrain, which is the terrain I traverse on my channel.

      The answer is in this video, you’ll learn so much more by watching rather than me typing it all out. No, tire size won’t mess up your AWD system. “Different” size tires will mess up differentials. If you run too big of tires on a Honda 5 or 6 speed, then you can really stress out the transmission. How does the lift and bigger tires affect the Ridgelines ride on the highway and what's the damage on MPG?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lift kit will affect MPGs, but it won’t be noticeable. Maybe a 0.1 mpg loss. Tires will adversely affect MPGs. The wider you go, the more friction there will be, ALSO tire width means more tire “tread” and tread is heavy. Tire weight really affects stop and go city MPGs. The less gears in your ride, the worse it’s going to be. So if you have a 2017-2019 Ridgeline, it’ll be worse than if you had a 2020+ Ridgeline. Tire type is also a big factor. I think I talk about it in this video, I made this a little while ago. I personally drive a Passport with the ZF9 speed. At the time of filming this video I was able to get 23 MPG highway cruising at 70Mph

      Gee Eee that’s a fair question. I actually regret not checking out a Jeep Wrangler JL. The reason I never even considered it was because of it’s perceived as an unreliable vehicle. The reason I purchased a Honda is because, for many, they’re #2 in reliability/dependability, right behind Toyota (however, not all models, and that’ll be a whole other story). Actually watch this video to get the history.
      th-cam.com/video/Hlg41C-W9r4/w-d-xo.html
      I basically use to drive a FJ cruiser, then a WRX, then a Forester XT and owning all those vehicles influenced the purchase of my Passport. I did not like driving the FJ, and the Subaru’s were just too unreliable. I wanted a compromise between the FJ cruiser and my WRX. This vehicle is my Daily Driver, I’m an overlander, not an off-roader.
      However, I’ve commented many times, I’m impressed with the JL Wrangler. It’s the only vehicle I’d trade my passport in for. I would not take a JK, 4runner, over this. I might take a GX460... but that’s a solid maybe.

      LINK: yourjeepguide.com/wrangler-reliability/
      "According to the J.D. Power Dependability Study, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler has a reliability score of 2.5 out of 5." (kinda low, right?)
      Or perhaps you failed to see the Jeep Recall of 91,000 vehicles due to ROLLOVER, from just a few days ago: LINK: www.freep.com/story/money/cars/chrysler/2020/06/18/jeep-cherokee-recall-rollaway-risk-power-loss/3213048001/ (kinda bad, right?)
      I found all these PROBLEMS in the time it took you to write your snappy retort. Now, if you love your Jeep and want to buy a new one, I'll sleep just fine at night! Just don't try to justify YOUR bad decision, with FAKE FACTS!

    Any issues with the tire light staying on with the bigger tires?

      No. That would depend on the tpms sensor. The PSI rating on the door jam is 37 psi. Because of the extra weight I carry, I air up to 40 psi. I’ve been as high as 44 psi with no light. around 33 psi is when I get a low pressure warning.
