    What the world needs most is quality education. In countries where it’s free, it’s in need of serious improvement, and in many places it’s not a priority. It’s the obvious solution to the world’s problems.
    Yeah, that’s my mission.

    • @mazorine
      @mazorine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nafem
      Agreed. The only reason I’m interested in science and education is because of TH-cam. Education, in my American experience at least, doesn’t teach to inspire interest and is usually taught inefficiently or not at all.
      Also it’s not centered around the individual. School should teach well everything NEEDED to be a productive citizen and then add classes that the student finds important. I’m sitting in a required floral class right now... yeah.

    • @jayfawn8478
      @jayfawn8478 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      most young people today don't understand the importance and functions of education so they take it for granted. others perceives it as wasting of money and time but earning a degree at least is one possible contribution to society.

      Are you in high school or college? (Either way, floral classes is not a very common option, much less a requirement. I'm intrigued as to why, and where) I ask because I'd be interested in discussing your ideas on creating a world or system of more quality education, and if you're heading towards a career in education.

    • @mazorine
      @mazorine 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      CallMeShirlie
      Senior in high school. Well we have to have an art credit even though we don’t have a typical art class. So the options are band or floral.
      I’d love to talk to someone about this. I want a future in education but I’m not sure where to start or if I should major in it. It’s become a drag to go to school when all you can see is the flaws. I feel like Sisyphus.

    Dropping the ''change the world' and 'what society needs' ego bullshit helped immensely. Chances are my soul came into this world to enjoy,to experience,to play ,to create not to be burdened with hugely exaggerated tasks of only relative importance , or slave to the imposed ideals set by society.

    My mission: to utilize space to solve our problems here on Earth. I think it's very important that we find ways of maintaining our resource-intensive societies without killing our planet. I also happen to have skills that support this view. My specific ambition in this regard is to engineer a propulsion system from Earth to space that's 1000x cheaper than a rocket. That's the first step: access to space. Once that's figured out, then the fun can truly begin. I know most people don't prioritize things this way, but space will slowly become one of the most important domains of human life on Earth in the next several decades. We will use it for energy, resources, research, manufacturing, entertainment and leisure, and all manner of the industrialized activities that make our existence on this beautiful, pale blue rock tenable. There are other things one could create a mission about. This particular one affects everyone in 40 years, so I find it prudent to spend time working on.

    Years ago I had a religious group knock on my door and ask me what my purpose in life was, I answered him squarely, 'I want to help to stop climate change'. His response was that nobody had ever been able to answer that question when he asked it. I know what my skills and interests are, the legal system and working in law, so I am now working towards becoming a barrister so that I can help change the law to make the government act on climate change. Literally, #Lifegoals

    Why do we need to have a mission at all? Why can't we work (dilligently) in whatever field we like and just enjoy life because I think whatever work we do, meaning whatever job we do, we are directly or indirectly contributing in the development of the world.
    But I agree thinking about what we want to do is useful to narrow down the choices and have clarity.

      Many workers don't fulfil themselves in their works. This is called 'alienation of labour'. In our modern society, most people don't work in order satisfy their own needs, they work in order to get paid a regular salary so they can survive (not necessarily live happily). Instead, they work for the satisfaction of the needs of other people. Many people experience that this evokes a void inside them, a feeling of not being a whole human.
      This video can help these people. If these people finds their mission, where they can utilize their full potential, they will feel fulfilment instead of void.

    I like the school of life so much and it has helped me with self-love, self-esteem a lot. But I don't like this one too much. not only because the importance of having a mission has been claimed by so many authors and nothing really new but also because an idea that one has to have a mission has deranged me a lot. I would rather want the school of life to talk about why it might be okay not to have a mission. I think it is not only me that has the same problem. We know it is important to have a mission, but we just cannot find it. And being told that its important over and over just increases anxiety. (But I do thank you for most videos!)

    My thoughts are that "happiness" is two parts: things you give to yourself (pleasure), and things you give to others (meaning). An excess of one or the lack of another can leave life feeling empty.
    My purpose or "mission" is to essentially promote personhood, but that doesn't mean I won't spend time reading a good book. ^__^
    Still, a great video! That's why i subscribe, thank you.

    I felt my mission become apparent to me around a decade ago. I still feel this burning urge to start or commit to this mission, but i am held back at the moment by medical issues in my way. It is not something in which I am procrastinating on, or dreaming about doing one day. I just do not have the abilities to start just yet. My life's dream is to be in a physical place where I can start my mission. It's one I feel is of importance to me which came about by learning a valuable life lesson very young. I hope one day to leave behind something in which I have implemented others to continue on their mission too. If we all put others needs first in the world, we could become a kinder race to each other, and no, I'm not living in some type of 'utopia' or am unaware of the natural instincts of mankind and the world in which we live. Just a small step of kindness once a day to another human being purely because we can.

    To help refine missions, consider the four basic needs for a healthy global system: body health (food and water inputs and body waste "recycling"), home health (healthy spaces to live in, for all), community health (public meeting/working spaces, transportation, energy production, history collection), and cultural health (stories/visions of a better future and defining who we are as a planet full of diverse animal, vegetable, and mineral life). Pick one to focus on and then do whatever you love to do in that area to help improve access to these things for some individual or group.

    Your mission also doesn't need to serve humanity in any way. If I set out to make beautiful artwork, then that is my mission but it doesn't serve humanity, it serves myself. But it's no less valiant a mission then anyone else's goals. There was this underlying message throughout this video that whatever you decided to do, it needs to be to further society. And, at least to me, that seems false. A mission should be (in my eyes) pursuing the mastery of something that brings you joy.

    Here is what I really want: I want to become a fashion designer but I DONT go to fashion school, I want to be a writer but I an not doing literature degree and my mother wants me to be a civil servant and I am preparing myself for that. But deep in my heart, I want to help people and our earth, I want to eliminate (or at least I can try) child labor and educate the masses. I am from Pakistan and more than 18 million children still don't go to school and it's heartbreaking because if you aren't going to school, you either are working or in the hands of extremists. Both are very harmful.

    Though the one thing I sort of disagree with is that you mission has to center around other's needs. I believe your mission has everything to do with your ambition and can be very much selfish. Maybe for example, a persons mission in life can simply be to become a more well-rounded and educated person I think that that has nothing to do with the success's their mission may achieve. Don't know if that makes any sense at all but anyway, I love the content in this video!

    • @laela6289
      @laela6289 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I like how this comment as well as similar ones, reflects the chronic individualism of today’s youth. We Millennials have been targeted for being the “Me Me Me” generation. I think part of the reason why this generation struggles with depression and feeling empty is the fact that we tend to be very self-absorbed. Serving humanity and being part of the bigger picture is a essential piece of fulfillment in one’s life. In your quest for knowledge you’ll probably come to a conclusion similar yourself.

    • @laela6289
      @laela6289 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      specter290 the problem is that capitalism itself is responsible for so much exploitation and destruction to our world. As well, as creating selfish mindsets like the one above where young people shun helping others and are only interested in themselves.

    Oh man... I am that guy with all the creative hobbies and no mission. I have a job where I help people a lot but it's actually not that fun. I'm a reasonable man swept up in the missions of others and spread thin over my varied areas of interest. I have some deep thinking to do.

    This is kind of discouraging for those of us who are disabled. I'd love to do a lot of things but can't do most of them. Having a mission only makes me feel more inadequate than I already feel because of the grand importance that society places on what a person does for a living.

    This seems to completely ignore that Elon Musk co-founded the company that eventually became PayPal and got extremely rich there first about 1 to 2 decades before Tesla and space-x, but a universal payment system didn't seem to be included in this video.

    if you're an artist, can creating art to bring some joy in ppl's lives be considered a mission?

    • @DylanFowler
      @DylanFowler 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AdaraTheShallot perhaps the ambition is to create the art in the first place and the mission is to get it copyrighted published, sold and exhibited to benefit others from viewing or owning the original or a copy? The thing is it's how you carry out the ambition and the mission will determine the quality and success of your product. And the levels of joy it brings to others.

    • @AdaraFukuchi
      @AdaraFukuchi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      righto

    • @DylanFowler
      @DylanFowler 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      AdaraTheShallot so the answer to your question is no. Cos you could put that art away after you finish it. It's what you do with your art afterwards in terms of promoting it.

    • @AdaraFukuchi
      @AdaraFukuchi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      what? no i said that u were right first time. i wanna make the art to bring some joy or made ppl think different perspectives. feel something or think. hopefully it helps them with something.

    Can you please expand on what seriousness means to you?
    Maybe it's just me, but I find that playfulness is a much better attitude for focus and energy.
    And seriousness seems like a hampering of imagination.

    But what if you are tired of people and don’t like of work for their needs? Though you have potential, you will end up not having a mission.
