Awesome recommendations! I recommend riding around your local neighborhood, jumping curbs and riding down steps can really help with bike control and the skills you learn can easily transfer over to the trails making for a more enjoyable experience
The first one I can relate to completely the first time back on a mountain bike I rode about a mile and a half and my wife and my friend had to bribe me with the promise of a shot and a beer to get me to ride back to the car. I was so out of breath I thought I would pass out!
more tips: don't buy the cheapest bike possible. don't have to buy the most expensive bike in the shop. make sure the bike fits you winter don't have to stop you from riding, studded tyres exist. don't buy a bike from the 90s even 2000s or 2010s as the geometry and fit sucks. used bikes and parts can be a great idea, but watch out for the pitfalls. don't use running shoes or casual street shoes. So as mentioned contact points matter, if it's winter tall pins is important, or you lose grip due to snow packing up. Get grips that fit, I recommend making a circle with index finger and thumb, measure it, that's the grip diameter you need.
One thing for sure I don't regret starting at 9 yrs old, the first decade was mostly accidents 😂 About helmets; it's the most underrated thing you can upgrade, when I go at the local pump track I often see kids without helmets, we call them the nutcracker gang, 3 to 5k bikes but you can't afford a helmet? Don't skip on the basics 💀
