    Bit late to the game but I highly recommend Fenrus as a Heimdal replacement. it's focused on speed while being much more customisable (Looks wise and different dashs between each user plus guest), and it has a Heimdal inspired theme that gives you similar looking links but separated by category

    Can you elaborate on how you sort out the jumble of overlapping ports (multiple services using the same port 80), get domains pointing to each of your services (with a reverse proxy?) and get them on https? That is my only problem on my own server

    • @AlbusRegis
      @AlbusRegis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many ways to solve that problem and in the end it comes down to personal prefference. I am going to tell you how I did it so that you may draw some inspiration.
      I got a proxmox hypervisor running various services on LXC containers, each has its own private static ip and an entry in a local dns server so that everything can be accesed by domain names like "dns.mylab", "proxmox.mylab" or "nextcloud.mylab".
      Some of the services I use are used through a web interface, those containers have nginx installed on them and reverse proxy "localhost::port" to "https//service.mylab" so that there are no random ports to remember.
      I use one nginx per container for the following reasons: They are independent, they use standard https ports and it lessens issues with non standalone https reverse proxy situations.
      To manage the certificates I use XCA, I created a local CA certificate and installed that to my network devices. This allows me to use one certificate per container and domain without having to propagate the public key for all container to network device permutation.
      Last but not least, to use the services on the go I have a Wireguard VPN to connect from the outside, which allows me to expose only one port to the internet and bypass most cg-NAT issues as well.
      I hope this wall of text solves your doubts :)

    As someone looking to get into a backup NAS for the first time (rather than using the cloud) how worried are you about synology's hardware? As an outside perspective it just feels like another thing to go wrong. Rather than just having to worry about the HDDs, which can be saved in RAID or parity configs, now I have to worry about the synology hardware failing. If a motherboard or something in the box fails I have to send it back to synology to be repaired is my understanding. Is that true? Is it not as simple as like TrueNAS or Unraid where I can personally replace components and then recover my HDD data?

    • @walterwhite2270
      @walterwhite2270 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Look into building a Truenas server....way more reliable and you can use your own hardware...if the motherboard fails you can put in a new one and be back where you were without data loss or waiting for a vendor hardware that may wipe your data when it boots up with your drives....

    • @Mobin92
      @Mobin92 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are worried about your data, you just have to consider *every* storage medium as untrustworthy. If you have a proper strategy your NAS is allowed to break. Worst case you buy a new one and resync your data from your other backups to it.

      You have to make it so pihole is the only accesible DNS in your network, this is specially true for android devices since android 11 as they will ignore DHCP or manual configuration if they can reach google's DNS servers in any way.
      To achieve this the fastest way is to block outbound port 53 in your firewall for all devices but the one running pihole.
