That's really inventive! I never would have thought of that first method. Do you suppose you could sand the back of the leading edge instead of putting a board on it? I'm guessing that the important point here is to create some canopy tension to help the wind pop the leading edge up.
This launch idea was suggested by Genetrix themselves, along with a how-to-diagram if I remember correctly. Not sure about the weighting the trailing edge with sand, it could prevent the kite from sitting up, although it might be worth a try. Obviously make sure your downwind is clear of obstacles before attempting or I will link to any future attempt that I make.
