This quick registry tweak enabled the Windows Media player in XP to play DVD's so you do not have to get another program to play them. This was tested with Media Player version 11 in Windows XP and works great.
If anyone is having problems with it, download VLC player, it's a light application and plays every format available. It's Open Source.
Well the CPU can if it's good enough, but GPUs are recommended as they're optimized for multiple simultaneous calculations.
That's the difference between onboard chipsets and dedicated cards.
1080p (30Hz) has lower demand than 1080i (50Hz), so your computer may be able to play it. However, Bluray supports both.
Just research it properly. It may be, by pure chance, that your computer can handle a bluray drive. Just don't expect anything smooth - if your CPU's busy, everything else'll lag.
Merry Christmas PCWIZKID! Keep em coming
Dude thank you! I've been needing to do something cause my other media player program kept messing up :( Now there is a quick and easy solution for me. :) :) FINALLY!
I'm getting a message that I need a certain codec to play dvd
No problem mate. A fast dual-core can render 1080p though (without GPU backup). An E8400 can, an E6750 can.
Hey, I was wondering if you are going to be making any videos on ripping dvds in the future?
is this only for DVD's? cause i download movies from websites and stuff. and wen i try to watch it on media player only the sound come out and not the video.
Vista Codec Package works great in XP as well.
PCWizKid, could you try to help me out with my problem? I did this, and when I try to put Zombieland (love that movie) in my DVD Drive, it works. However, the sound of everything BUT the music is REALLY quiet. I can't even hear their voices without straining really hard.
Is that the Zune desktop you have there?
how do you get the registry on the laptop...I have windows media player 11 and it still says need dvd decoder installed. Im trying everything and tried to follow your intructions but some reason i dont have the registry for windows media player or anyother registry
What do you use to edit your videos.
thank you for helping but when I try paly a DVD a box popup and said 'Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.' what do I have to do?
Thank you bro it's working ❤️ love you

Bhai hlo
hi there can you tell when i put a cd in to listen to it on windows media player its fine but when i put a dvd in it will not let me watch it at all
Is this the fix for when WMP ask for a driver to play DVDs? That happened on my moms desktop top and I couldn't understand why.
bro how did you opened menu of media player plz tell me
With hand
I said that because if you haven't got a new ATI or nVidia card with UVD or PureVideo HD, you're CPU will try rendering video. Coolmanjasdeep jumped to the graphics card right away, and said Blu-Ray would 'wreck' my video card. I'm still wondering how that is possible if a video card that CAN run HD video, has a universal decoder built it, which enables it to run HD video anyway.
ok so what if i have the movies on my computer but when i play them it olny plays the sound track and not the video part.
@mattodrummer That's a really dumb question. The answer would be, you buy a DVD drive.
@shooz4u Vista and 7 come with this enabled...maybe your drive is only for CD's and not DVDs...if you have 2 drives, try the other one.
I used to use it on XP before switching to vista :)
True. I just wanted to be sure you knew that 1) you'd need a pretty good (and compatible) card.
And 2) Bluray and CPU-rending just doesn't happen (and won't for some time).
Hi, I have a problem with my Win media player,
Does not play a video it only
Gives a messages C00D1198 can you tell me how to fix it?
And when I try to burn a DVD it doesnt work either
Thank You
how did you get this to HD? I've tried forever!
hey man mine comes up a error mesage tht says something bout my video driver being out of date?? any sugestions?? pm me a answer if u got one
does it work for windows media player 10???
did not work it says i need to change the display settings how do i do that
What doesn't work? So far, I've seen reviews on two software packages which could easily handle Blu-Ray.
how to check the version of your media player???
@tbel1ma
Why don't you pause it?
I don't get why it's hard to understand... bluray means rending 1080i at real-time. That's the graphics card's job, not the bluray drive.
What's that got to do with video cards?
hmm, I downloaded 11 but it still says I need the decoder. Maybe i did something wrong
Sir, I cannot find the "New" button.
Mine works, but the sound is completely disabled and i cant hear anything, so really its worthless, and it keeps telling me to use intervideo windvd. any ideas?
I am unable to get enable xp to recognize the dvd movie an/or give me a window with opening programs. Nothing shows up on screen when dvd is put in player? What's going on?? Like your video. Very nicely done! KK
I did as ur video says & got "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."
I use VLC, it's better then WMP - more tweeks and options and plays virtually any format aswell as dvds - and it's a legit free download
Doooood!!!! You are the mannnnn!! Can't tell you how much time I have wasted with this until you came along...muchisimas gracias... !!!! Actually, I would have already bought software from Corel.. was ready to try their DVD program for 39.95... free one month trial.. BUT every time I tried to download it, they tried to scam me with the Pro version (which is 99.00) I already hated Corel from past dealings.. now I don't have to deal with them.. thanks to you they'll prolly send a hitman.Carefu
sir I have this process my to be run but also go setting and not run this process
why nothing happen when i put my dvd in?i have already downloaded window media player 11 but i don t work.help...
You still need the DVD decoder for it to work.
i can ply it....but no sound
I always could do that without a tweak, wonder why.
Me either. Still says can not play this video.
me two. also i found another way of doing this. just right click your dvd drive and select Properties => autoplay and select the dvd movies from the drop down list
What do u mean? Screw up?
I don't have the settings tab! :(
With UVD the GPU takes over the entire load. I can run ANY video (in HD) with virtually no CPU load.
tried other players and they dont work either. It used to play. My old games still play fine. Just can't play my movies any more.
You create the "folder"(key).
How do I extend it
I don't get how do u ex spend that stuff
Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer. Clicking the button for web help, Microsoft says if you didn't purchase Windows Media Center, you will have to purchase a decoder. They only mention two, but I knew this info was too good to be true. Even VLC is not playing. Couple years ago I had a system where I purchased software to make my dvd player work. I don't even know why the computer ppl install dvd players in systems if they aren't gonna play dvds. May as well stick to CDroms.
still no autoplay when I put in DVD
how to do that 4 window 7
thank you i have windows xp and i did not know anything about it you helped thanks again
ok thats great but ummm my computer doesnt detect and thing in the CD Disk drive so wats wrong!!????
I tried this. It wouldnt work. I guess I dont have codecs. I downloaded VLC and it works great.
@urielmimi
You probably could if you have Windows Media Player 11.
im trying but my comps soooo slow..
No it isn't. Normally it's the cpu. But I have an HD3850 with UVD so I can run 1080p MP4 and WMVHD, no problem at all.
DO you even have a dvd player?
So what you're saying is that your graphics core is doing the rendering, as I said before. Why did you say this then; "No it isn't. Normally it's the cpu."
ANYWAY just wait for a bit 'til the Bluray market cools down.
any1 know how make your dvd drive region free i have a samsung tsstcorp sh-s223f . i have reach my region limits. tried everything so can PCWizKid or anyone help me
I used media player 11 and it didn't work
Thanks so much, it worked great for me!
Yeah, I use VCL, although it gives me some problems sometimes. :s
Merry Christmas!
ahh ok another question how to update my player???
thank you so much man!!
you're the guy!
didn't work... couldn't find that folder!!!
dose not work for me
worked exactly as described. thanks!!
didn't work
don't work for me :(
That doesn't work either.
I was thinking that too... I can imagine there being the occasional manufacturer that wants you to use their proprietary PowerDVD or whatever they called it now.
Oh dear. Can't spell..
Thank you sooooo much!
So just go to "My Computer" and double click the drive from there.
I don't hawe the DVD subkey!!!!!
I'm actually thinking about buying a Blu-Ray drive...
Thanks it worked, dude. You rule!
thank u so much u really helped me out
DO NOT mess about with the registry
no wounder i couldn't play dvds
its not working
Windows media player cannot play the dvd because a compatible dvd decoder is not installed on your computer.
i still get that !
doesn't work if you don't have a dvd drive!!!
wow...
wtf?? i swear media player plays dvd's already, well mine does and i havnt tweaked it at all
I don't care about video cards. I was talking about Blu-Ray, and you guys continue about graphics cards. Don't ask me why...
also you can download VLC media player at filehippo(dot)com so you can play a DVD if you aren't sure what your tweaking in your registry.. ^_^
Great video, still never worked for me.
doesnt work
awts it dint worked T_T
i dont play dvd on windows xp only windows 7 on windows media center but thanks
Not work.
Wait for the technology to become better established.
Can't you just buy a DVD drive? Damn, how old is your pc?
nem bonyolult csak letoltitek aztán letoltetek egy videot es megjeleniters mappaban utanna asztalra ha ott nyismeg a videot és kész
