Saw an interview with Bowes where he basically said they never want to become one of those pirate bands that take everything really seriously and don’t actually enjoy what they’re doing. Hence stuff like this work of crazy genius

For all those whining about this going away from their pirate metal roots you've not listened to them long. This happened with the last 2 albums. Sunset on a Golden age started with 'Drink' been released first and people moaned they were not serious pirates anymore but then the album came out and we got served up some real treats like The Battle of Cartagena and Sunset on a Golden Age. Then with No Grave but the Sea we got 'Alestorm' the first single released and again some whinged they were moving away from serious Pirate Metal and then again we got some cracking songs like 'Man the Pumps' and 'No Grave but the Sea'. It'll be the same here. They literally cannot just do the same bog standard pirate ballad every single song it's great how they can mix up the genre whilst still producing excellent pirate metal. This song is brilliant and I've no doubt the album will deliver as well.
If you didn't notice at 4:37 with captions activated, there's a funny message "This is awful, I preferred Alestorm when they were a serious band, back when they did true pirate metal songs like "Rumpelkombo" and "Wooden Leg" and that Eurovision hit "Wolves of the Sea".

Their frontman Christopher Bowes also has a bean-themed techno metal band...so that says a lot about how crazy he is. He also has albums where he plays the organ and sings rather badly.
Alestorm aren't a band I listen to to challenge my musical tastes and expect to push the genre forward. I listen to Alestorm because they are consistently hilarious, catchy, and embody the not-giving-a-fuck-attitude I look for when I want to just sit back and listen to something fun. Alestorm arrrrrrrr FUN. On the metal encyclopedia, many people treat having fun as a bad thing. Its the reason I love Alestorm, power metal, and all kinds of other music. Music is such an awesome tool for expression and mood.
Yeah, I listen to most bands to have fun, and I'd argue you generally make better music if you're having fun rather than trying to go for purity. And if for some reason I wanted to get on a metal purist's good side I'd just blast Iron Maiden. Everybody at least respects Iron Maiden.
Yet they are still able to do the fastest solos, modulate to the heaviest riffs including the most extreme styles and sound as great as any serious band out there. They are funny and very talented musicians.

When they were here in Argentina, I had the honor of meeting cap'n Chris. First I found him out of the show, before it started, drinking beer with the fans and his sexy nail toes painted green. After the show, I went to the hotel cuz a friend wanted a photo but he couldn't go to the show. When we arrived, I saw the back of the cap'n who was playing alone in the hall, and drinking a beer. I call him and his reaction was epic... he looked up to the roof! I called him again, and then he realised I was out on the street. He walked out of the hotel to meet us, and then, out of nowhere, I recieved the BEST FUCKING 5-MIN-LONG DRUNK HUG OF MY LIFE!!!! Then he stood up and told me that the band was kind of sleeping (2 am). I asked what time they where leaving. He took his time, thought it seriuously, counted whit his fingers and he said: "aaaaam...one hour". I wanted to join the crew, but then I realized I'm not worthy enough... but hey! I met him!

Open letter to Alestorm: Dear drunk pirates. I know you're only here to have fun. But you don't have to go this way. You can never run out of lyrics for songs, and you haven't covered everything that's pirate. You can just make endless of awesome songs like 1741 Cartagena. Just pirate history songs, a bit Sabaton style. Pirates are historic after all. And I think Cartagena is one of Alestorm's best songs. I think that would be epic, just get into the books and write songs about real and brutal pirates and stuff. Never let the people win who think a pirate themed band can't last forever, it can perfectly last forever. Dear drunk pirates. I know you're only here to have fun. But you don't have to go this way. You can never run out of lyrics for songs, and you haven't covered everything that's pirate. You can just make endless of awesome songs like 1741 Cartagena. Just pirate history songs, a bit Sabaton style. Pirates are historic after all. And I think Cartagena is one of Alestorm's best songs. I think that would be epic, just get into the books and write songs about real and brutal pirates and stuff. Never let the people win who think a pirate themed band can't last forever, it can perfectly last forever. You could just create songs about medieval European pirates or Chinese ones if the Caribbean ever gets stale. You've got this.
