Media, securtity and there is a lot of sound equipment there as well (subwoofers) which need protection from the public. Most large concert stages have this area, although that one looks wider than is really necessary.
Not a big fan of their music. But they're damn good at it and put on a GREAT show. And then there's their stage presentation as the kids next door: Gracie the cheerleader, her brother Clyde the piano nerd. Plus a tight soul band in uniforms behind them. Although the band don't quite have the Dancing Soul Men thing down - their notes are dead-on, their steps less so.
I saw them just last November in Syracuse, and believe you me, they are a force of nature when it comes to stage presence. Considering they have been performing for the better part of 2 decades (basically since they were toddlers, their father has even been quoted saying "Clyde basically came out of the womb writing songs" he wrote the theme song for the pageant for the film Miss Congeniality when he was like 4 or 5) show some respect.
