Just a gentle reminder, that price is ALWAYS subjective.... Sure, $1400 is a lot, however I personally know people who have $15,000 TVs and $20,000 sound setups.... just remember that every ones finances and willingness to pay is obviously going to vary. Lets not all be "Price Fairies" now....
so true jay, i can't disagree or say anything on other peoples own personal choices, i can only give recommendations. so yeah, let's just say you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
I spend 40$ on my audio setup. I picked up a pair of Philips FB 815 speakers for free. Refoamed them myself for 20$ Then I got an amplifier that had some problems with the power delivery, resolderd some things on the motherboard and changed a few capacitors (5$). Bought some cables (5$) and now I think I have the best audio setup possible for 40$, btwc the FB 815 speakers sound amazing with a good amplifier, I'm literaly blown away.
I watched your video about gpu bottlenecks and I have a question. If my cpu usage is not reaching close to 100% why do other cpu's perform better with the same gpu?
I personally own a Sonos Playbar, Sub, and two Play:3s as surrounds for my living room and I haven't regretted it for a second. Sonos produces high quality speakers and sound great and have a plethora of options and features. It's obvious that all of the people who are "hating" on this video are people who haven't used Sonos speakers before.
I have had 2 sound systems for my TV in 15 years. Both under $600. I bought the PlayBar and Sub and Wow! Simplicity and High fidelity! 2 days later and a total of $2100 I purchased 2 Play 3 speakers and am blown away by the surround sound. I am now looking at 2 Play 5's to add to my family room.
Completely agree. I sold this heavily when I was in retail and the demo units really weren't that good and our Sonos rep just ignored me(think he hated me for some reason). Every customer I sold one I always saw them coming back to thank me and most times buy more speakers. Great video by the way.
I don't understand why people are getting up in arms about this review... It's a review over a product that may not be the best quality, may not be the best sound, but quite honestly it's the best I've seen in simplicity for this price. Alot of people may not be worried about having 100% accuracy and a THD of 0.00000000001% but instead would like an option that is as simple as possible. I however strive for accuracy (and it is by far not simple to achieve) so this product is not going to be for me, I can however have respect for the audio quality (which is only ~10% subjective btw) with something this simple to use and see how it can fit in. These people calling themselves "audiophiles" and shitting on this review need to sit down...
I've had one for about a year, and it is an amazing piece of technology. The only criticism I have is that the Playbar actually lost its connection to my network not once, but on two separate occasions. No amount of troubleshooting could fix the problem, and so I had to send it back to Sonos for a replacement. The representatives I spoke with could never really explain what the problem was, other than general "electronic failure." On the plus side of that issue, their customer service was very helpful and thorough, and they had the replacements at my house within 48 hours of my initial call both times. It's been a good few months, and the third Playbar is working perfectly. And hey...if Sonos gets BaBa Booey's approval, then it must be worth it.
I have Sonos around the house, including the Playbar and Subwoofer. The people complaining about the price are misguided in my opinion. There is not other company out there which has superior sound quality, has all the streaming services available (even the small ones...and Tidal for the best streaming losless quality). I am streaming, from the same account, different songs around the house, radio, or play the same thing in certain parts or all around. All of this, with the speakers in perfect sync while they create a huge mesh network of their own for the best connection. And if one speaker is very far away from the rest of the mesh, you just need to tell Sonos through the app your home network details and that will allow that speaker to connect to the 'Sonos Network' and mesh through your home wifi. I can list so many more things. So if you ask me, I think think this is well damn worth the price.
I've been using sonos fo about 4yrs, I not come across a better system. We have all our new and old c d's downloaded onto a wifi hard drive. great system.
Stereo systems from the 70's had so little to hook up compared to today the hardest thing was making sure your tonearm was set properly. Compared to now, the 70's and 80's systems were easy.
You are 100% correct about sound at stores. I bought it 1 to try it out based on reviews. Now I'm expending because the sound it's much better in my home then stores
I have heard full surround units in the past, but the cleanliness and ease of control on a sound bar is just as good, to me, as that full surround. I'll take my 3.1 Bar and Woofer over a huge set up.
Sound is such a suggestive thing. It's not just the sound quality that people buy systems like this. All the smart features of this equipment is part of the reason they're 700 bucks each. Don't let the haters bug you Jay. Tech is tech, even when it's not PC related or what not. Honestly though, I'd be curious to see how this pairs up with an HTPC. Great video yet again man.
THANK YOU! I went to best buy with the full intention of purchasing playbar and sub. Walked out with nothing because it sounded absolutely terrible. Will reconsider thanks to your video.
i am using Denon AVR-X2100W + Jamo S 526 HCS + Jamo SUB210 and i must say the sound is very clear and good, everything connected, bluray play,ps4,xbox 1
There is no replacement for displacement. I use the full size Paradigm speakers hooked to a Denon. When I play the beginning of Blade Runner for people on it they cry.
So a $700 bar with a bunch of features that like 5 people who regularly have parties or need that many different audio things going at once will use. I still can't imagine replacing an actual surround sound setup - ESPECIALLY a 7.1 setup with a single front-facing bar. And you can't even argue for the "wireless satellites" and sub, because they don't come with it and are expensive as hell. ...and wireless. If I'm going to pay $700-$2000 for an audio setup, I want some analog inputs, not to stream crap AAC files or TH-cam videos from a freaking tablet/phone... o_O I'll stick to my surround.
***** Am I? I mean, I guess your message about fixing the in-store demo-kiosk is important, because as a subjective sound product, *how it sounds* and how the sound performance w/ blu-rays and gaming compares to a manual surround setup is almost key to making the purchase. But that's not something you can really touch on in a video - as you mentioned - and if the demo doesn't work, then they can't honestly expect to sell much. I can see why you'd get it if you got to use and listen to your friend's unit, but for everyone else - unless those features of the software are that important (most of which I see no value in specifically having/buying for, though they'd certainly be convenient on the random chance they would get used) there's no real way to justify the investment without any real reason to believe it'd be a good replacement for an existing sound system. I've seen and heard general sound bars before and not been all that impressed. So from this kind of perspective, all I can see the reason for getting this specific one being the features and wireless crap, which is either going to be very useful or totally useless, depending on the person. I've always seen sound bars as being the home theater version of "virtual surround sound" software for those who are too lazy/inexperienced/un-wanting to set up an actual surround setup. So I guess I'm just shocked that you/someone with a 7.1 setup would go for this. So less that I don't like your video or review - don't get me wrong - I just still don't feel convinced since, to me, sound should be most important.
***** I never said he did. o-O But this is a product review/overview/demo, so I'm expressing my critique of my impressions of the product, as per the format, hopefully in an attempt to get a bit more clarity.
Rosco Harris A lot of words, with a decent amount of thought into them, else you clearly didn't read my comment. Yes, that is what a sound bar is decent for. I even acknowledged that. However, Jay *replaced* his surround setup with it, which eliminates the qualifier of "someone who doesn't want surround" which is what confuses me. And he only said he bought the bar and the subwoofer (he mentioned the satellite speakers yet that was never included in what he said he actually bought) therefore that bit is not going to be used. He replaced a 7.1 surround setup with a static sound bar and wireless subwoofer. That's what confuses me. I'm all for having a sound bar in a variety of situations, but a clearly-expensive home theater with a 4k TV and pre-existing 7.1 setup? Not really.
***** I never once said he needed my approval. Quit defending him as I'm not attacking him nor complaining about his video. I'm critiquing/complaining about the *product* given that this is a review of the product. Blindly defending is pointless when I'm not attacking him.
Hey Jayz, been loving your videos for just over a year now, helped me with some builds and picking out some pc parts, so I wanted to say thank you :) for the work you do.
bose hooked up to analyze Optical with my phone as a remote good for me .I ordered my system with is 7.1 in 2013 for 1000$ .but still going good I love em.
My setup is pretty simple; I use my gaming (water cooled) PC for my home theater as well, when I'm not using a headset for gaming/ watching movies late at night, I use my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers. While they may not crack windows, I live in an apartment and they suit my needs just fine.
hey man...I just brought my Sonos system and it's INCREDIBLE!!! all you said about it is true but one thing to me I don't like is the app!!! you should be able to use it anywhere for the price we spent on the system!!! we should be able to customize the system on the go; I shouldn't have to be home just to add something through Sonos app. But performance is even better than Bose to me; I stood next to a Bose system then heard Sonos I was sold and just whipped out the card like soooo fast. Well that's my 2 cents.
Love SONOS! I have two PLAY:1 speakers and a SONOS Connect. Definitely going to add the playbar and sub next! Let everyone know that not only can they use an iphone, ipod, tablet, and android device, but also a PC or Mac, since they have the included CD with the easy set up in it. First SONOS device will either need a SONOS Bridge or Boost, or will need to have an Ethernet cable connected to it to get it out to the internet and connected to your home network. Afterwards, all additional SONOS devices will connect to each other wirelessly using a mesh style of connection, where every device connects to every other device. That helps reduce bottlenecks when they start wanting to talk to each other, and also helps extend the range from the initial hard-wired device.
I have a 5.1 Sonos surround and love it. By far the best surround sound system for this price point. I use this in my living room and I have golden ear 7.1 in my home theater but they sound similar and the sonos were cheaper.
I've been using Sonos for years.. Also have a Playbar + Sub and 2 Play:3's that function as rear speakers for 5.1 surround if I want to.. Also using a Sonos Connect to play my old vinyl collection over the Sonos speakers.. It can all be done.. Best thing is they keep updating the software, improving and adding new functionality.. Sure, it's not the cheapest audio stuff you can buy or the best, but like Jay also said already, it's also not by far the most expensive and there are far worse options outthere and for what it does it's pretty damn good.. And lets be honest, who cares how much it cost if you have the money, hobbies cost money, be it PC stuff or audio.. Jay, if you can afford it, add 2 Play:1 or Play:3's so you can setup a real 5.1 system,.. You'll be amazed.. P.s. for 3.1 or 5.1 you'll need a Sonos Bridge (or Boost) or have at least 1 Sonos speaker connected with a cable to your home network.. But as seen in your video your Playbar is already hooked up by wire, which figures because otherwise your 3.1 would also not work.. So you're all set..
If this can do Dolby Atmos in the future, then I am sold. I know an uber small sampling of movies take advantage of it, but I just cannot go back to 5.1 or even 7.1 set ups after experiencing Dolby Atmos. Great video none the less.
If your saying that the music is streamed from the phone when you say it makes the phone into the player then you are incorrect, the app is what it says on the tin - a controller. It controls the CPU/whatever in the speakers and the music is streamed directly by the bridge/speaker/playbar
Sony STR-DH130 stereo receiver (all analog, no display connections or S/PIF connections; up to 135 W per channel, 100 W RMS), with 2 Klipsch 3-way bookshelf speakers. No sub needed, it kicks hard, and is every bit as clear when I play music as it is big sounding for movies.
After watching your videos on getting out of credit card debt, and budgeting your money, and saving for a family vacation, finding out that you invested in Sonos equipment came as quite a shock.
How so? Life doesnt stop.... and when you save/work hard for something that doesnt affect the finances, how is that a bad thing? You dont think this affected my finances do you? Because if it had been a negative thing for my end goal, obviously I wouldnt have done it. If you got the impression from my vlog channel that I wasnt going to "buy anything" anymore, then you got the wrong impression. Our debt is gone, our bills are paid, and the savings account is busting at the seams, so far.... we are doing quite well. Id be willing to discuss how our finances work a bit more, but not here.
Oh wow! You turn things around alot faster than I could. I really enjoy your videos and am glad your doing well and reaping the benefits of your hard work. I just was inspired by your improvement of your finances and wanted to make sure you weren't going backwards, but clearly youre doing great so have fun with the sonos gear. Best wishes.
Yet again another good review Jay. Your editing is amazing. I'm just now getting into uploading my own TH-cam content and your one of my inspirations to taking the plunge. Keep up the good work!
I want to be friends with the Mrs. She must be the most understanding when it comes to having cool gadgets. A military veteran salutes you ma'am. Yes loves a battle !
Hey Jay, Sonos has a windows application that you can use to control your Sonos system. It works great as well. I use Sonos myself and I think you forgot to mention the great feature that you can buy other Sonos speakers and place them in other rooms in your house and either let them play other music or group one or more rooms to play the same source. And that you can play music from your NAS on the network. The Sonos Play:1 is a great alarmclock.
I work at a shitty electronics store... and I primarily sell TV's with audio equipment. it's amazing how many people will buy a £1000 4K TV without any intention of buying audio equipment (even after I say it's a major part of the experience). And when people are buying a soundbar all I need to do is find the most bass heavy speaker and play it, I guess the general public have the BEATS mentality and like the mild hum of a low quality speaker.
I like wires, especially running from 3 power amps into 2 mixers, different signal processors and running bluetooth from my gaming computer into 6-15" ps speakers,2 18" subs and 1 4x12 cabnet that i dont use.Add the Marshall 100watt tube guitar amp just for preamping and its 2 1960B cabnets and im good.
Jay, how is the center channel control via optical? I know you only get pass through from certain televisions. I'm assuming yours is one. But this is the main reason I didn't buy the sonos. I'm now considering the Soundtouch 300 and bass because there seems to be some amount of control of dialogue volumes.
Hey Jay you don't need a phone to set up a sonos with a phone you can also use a computer. But I also really recommend sonos they are great!! use mine every day love it
Amazon accidently sent me a sonos satellite along with what I originally ordered. It's a great speaker and I would love to buy another but it is quite expensive
Just remember that you still need power outlets for each Sonos component's location. I integrate Sonos into new and old systems all the time. They work great unless you're dealing with people that don't know how apps and wifi work. That being said, it's a learning curve that I have gotten the least tech savvy people I know through. Also, if you are not hooking into a network with internet, the app will most likely have newer software than the component and you will have to either roll back the software on your phone, not sure about that one, or hook the Sonos up temporarily to internet to update it.
Erik Snider Sonos devices will be periodically updated during manufacturing and i think the app is backwards compatible with all sonos software updates but until you register and update the device, certain features are disabled like adding new music services.
Have you (or any others) set up the surround sound...with the Play1or3 as your rear speakers? From what i read, each speaker needs to be plugged into an outlet? Is correct?
***** I understand, but it's hard to consider this a "wireless" solution...if you still need to run the power cords. So you still need to hide come wires, correct?
Akira Ichikawa I know you are trying to be a smartass, but no, not that router itself. I would not consider that wireless. Provides wireless connectivity.
I've got a large 5 year old Sub from SVSound and I've never gotten any vibration on the cabinet itself... and I always sat stuff on it.. like coins... drinks.. etc... But it had ridiculous rumble throughout the room.. That also was a single woofer.. standard sub design... So I think that has more to do with the design and build of the cabinet than having opposing woofers..
Just curious... you said you were watching a blueray DVD on this. If the optical cable goes between the soundbar and the tv, how does the blueray or other component (PS4 (AppleTV)) integrate? Thanks. Great video
I have a Sony 7 channel receive I bought about a year ago or so and now maybe wish I had gotten something like this. Not only is the Sony and receivers like it difficult to properly set up, but they generate a ton of heat especially if you set them up in an enclosed case. I'm assuming you have none of these issues with this Sonos. If the surround sound is the same as what you would get from a higher end receive system the price seems to work out about the same after you buy a receiver and separate good speakers, maybe the Sonos is even cheaper. I'll definitely give a device like this a look the next time I redo my living room audio.
I've got a playbar and a play one in my office, since my dad works for Sonos, which makes me a beta tester. I hope they update the PC controller soon though, I'm confident they will, but I need it sooner
JayzTwoCents, out of topic : why high end systems or users dont use ssd like p3700 400gb 1200$ , or p3600. Could you try contact intel and get some samples and test for Us? Thanks for all great work
yes its pricey right now but prices always come down. the way it connects through your home network is pretty stellar. its just a new approach to where home theater technology can go. jayztwocents clearly wanted to try something new and more than likely expand on sonos and sonos sub. honestly me personally idk would i would if i had $2000 for a home theater but i know that whatever i get, its going to be stellar. right now in my bedroom i actually have a vizio 42" soundbar 5.1 system for $250??? dude its pretty awesome!. its definitely not greatest when it comes to music. honestly terrible frequency range from the sub woofer. just overall just not necessarily meant for music listening but you still can. some songs may sound great and others wont. but soon i will be getting a big upgrade to my system.
i got the vizio 54' surround soundbar set to pair with my 60' vizio 4k tv and both were still under $1400. the features of the sonos seem really cool, but i just can't see myself spending that much on a soundbar and subwoofer. but at least you're happy with it.
Hey jayz, Are you going to add a pair of play 1's or play 3's for 5.1 surround? I would like to hear your opinion about the difference with the play 1's or play 3's
hey wanted some help make a purchase decision.which do you feel is good sound setup for sonos (playbar +2×play1+sub) or (sonos beam + 2*play 5) for a living room 22ft×12ft approx. great work comprehensive reviews.
I just purchased this Sonos playbar tonight at best buy as well. I also picked up the SUB. I went in to return some external drives I did not need and had in mind to buy the $500 bose speaker. I knew a few people at the store and they recommended me to buy the sonos. So far so good, I couldn't believe either how easy it was to install. I really like, it really hurts my pocket but I am enjoying it. I also connected some of my retro game consoles and I had a blast with the sound. Love the mobile app as well. Are you still happy with your sonos?
Good review! I got the Polk Audio Omni SB-1 and it works pretty much same way, download an app, comes with remote though. Its a 3.1 soundbar, with a dedicated center channel that you can adjust for dialogue, wireless 8" ported down firing sub. Has center channel and bass adjustments on bar and remote as well as a music and movie mode button. Connects to home wifi as well, if you got a music server you can play anything from that, your device, and has pandora and a few other built in music apps. You CAN add rear wireless speakers as well, as well in other rooms. There wireless speakers have built in rechargeable batteries to take with you around your house which is cool. Polk & Definitive are in the process of coming out with a true 5.1 wireless system. You can add the rear speakers and use it as a surround sound system but wont give you 100% true 5.1 yet, that should be out by June via app update. There are two versions of the satellite speakers, ones more rugged for outdoor use and the other is for surround speakers and they start at $179.99. The bar and sub come together as a package, and its $699.99 so half the price of the Sonos, great alternative. Very warm natural sounding bar. Subwoofer is good too, powerful tight bass that can hit lows. I have this in a large living room that connects to the kitchen and you can hear the system pretty much anywhere in the house. Gets as loud as you'll need it to. Overall its a fantastic system with great sound. The next option closest to the Sonos would be Definitive Technology W Studio 6 channel Soundbar and Subwoofer (8") for $1299.99, you can add speakers to the system as well. I work at Best Buy in home theater/magnolia so I'm alway demoing these and the Definitive bar definitely sounds better than the Sonos bar. And if you were to take it home, it would sound even better. If you're looking to buy a soundbar and want the best sound, check out the Polk Omni SB-1, Sonos, & Definitive Technology W Studio.
Why do people think that a stereo is difficult to set up, i have a 1977 luxman laboratory reference series amplifiers and hooked up a music streamer to it and it has all the features of a modern amp. If you want to use optical you just use a dac. You literally need 4 cables for it, 2 to go to the speakers, one to go from the pre amp to the poweramp and one to go from your source to the pre amp
Man some people are so butthurt over this video! Sound bars are amazing, imagine a sound bar and surround setup plus the subwoofer. whoooa.. All the features this thing has are amazing! Remember kids, this was a review and recommendation... He never said go buy or you suck, he never said ditch your surround sound. It was a review and recommendation.. be respectful and appreciative of it,
To each their own, though for $1400 I would likely build a 2.1 nearfield/midfield monitor system. Home theater systems fail to impress me after experiencing even low/mid tier studio equipment.
currently using A mixture of Jbl gear, ES90 Fronts, JBL Balboa Set (Sub, Centre and Fronts) using the fronts as rears, ES150P but heart transplanted the balboa guts into the ES150P Box and vice versa. Harmon Kardon AVR 165 as my reciever but looking to change to Yamaha (cant remember the model) that has 7.1 but you change it to 5.1 and BI-Amp the fronts. In the bedroom Im running JBL Cinema SCS200.5 with a borrowed Harmon Kardon AVR 3000. Unsure as to what type of amp il get for the bedroom but probably a Yamaha
I have the the Play:1 SONOS speaker and it sounds great however you can't use apps such as TH-cam and iTube for playing music only what is on the phone
***** But it's the same system, so if you cant do it on a Play:1 you cant do it on a PlayBAR. Unless you are hinting to the usage of the TH-cam tv app.
Daniel k If you mean iTunes then you can use iTunes directly in the sonos app by following the steps in this article: sonos.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1049/~/sonos-and-itunes
Are you kidding? Do you have any idea what I could use $1400 on? There are 4k tvs on sale for less than that. Really good 4k tvs. At least it isn't bose. I'm no "audiophile", but, geez. I mean, H/K makes some of the cleanest and loudest speakerbar/sub systems(sub included) for half that price, and I'm fairly sure you couldn't tell the difference with your eyes closed. I think you basically paid an extra 500 for the wireless connectivity. (Experience: 5 yrs in high end audio/video retail) PS: I'm not hatin', everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I suppose you already knew that, Mr. "TwoCents."
Thumbs up, bro. BTW, huge thanks to you and everyone in the youtube tech community. I have just finished my first build since 2001, and simply COULD NOT have done it without the expertise and advice from you, Linus, Slick, Paul, and Austin. Never stop doing what you guys do. #muchrespect
matt brauninger Yes but I'd prefer a mid range TV and fantastic sound over a 4k tv with poor sound quality any day. It's only when you get the best possible sound that you really feel like your in the cinema.
when you hear good lossless surround hd-audio the first time, there is no going back... I have a B&W Zeppelin air in the bedroom and I love it, but for movies I need hd-audio with my 20 years old Vienna Acoustics speakers. this is a good demo...for me personaly, it would have been interesting to hear a little bit more about the built quality of the speakers. what kind of drivers are they using, especially in the sub? what kind of materials are used for the soundbar?
I just use some Logitech Z523 speakers through my HTPC. They aren't pro grade audio, but the sound reproduction in my living room with these is pretty nice with their bi-directional cones. This Sonos setup looks killer though, might have to snag one of these myself at some point.
set this up for a friend of mine the sound is awesome for what it is :) that said ill keep my oldschool 7.1 sys for now just like wrestling with cables
For my home theater I have a logitech Z906 connected to my computer, xbox and IPTV system through optical cables. Those speakers are mounted to the wall and the sound is a beast. It also has to do with the fact that my room is actually not very big and it measures something like 12ft x 12ft. It's great but I feel like I can'0t take full advantage of the full sound because of how small my room is.
Personally I think Sonos would hit the nail if their next product is just different dongles, that you can plug in to any speaker or sub you want, making them as convenient as possible while giving more options to the consumer. I'm not saying the speakers on the Sonos are bad, but it'd be like a DIY Sonos system, that can be cheaper, as well as targeting audiophiles that won't use anything else than their preferred speaker/sub.
I have a 7.1 marantz receiver with yamaha speakers and 2 powered subs, all bought at goodwill for under 150 bucks total. It's hard for me to find an upgrade when I factor in the price I paid.
Just wrote ya a big massive comment jay, I rarely comment but you were the one that taught me everything there is to know about PC's, where the first one went to I don't know 😞 ow well, I haven't got a pc at the moment still saving up jay, but when the time comes I would love ❤ to have your help I don't know what it is jay but when you explain things in regards to PC's they just seem to sink in my man 👨 brain, ya truly did inspire my move to pc. I'm currently using my moms when she's not doing her transcription business on it, it's not very powerful can't play many games on steam it has a i3 3.4 ghz and 8 gigs of ram and Intel graphics, but the games I can play 🎭 I enjoy. I'm really liking Airmech at the mo. Still haven't figured out how to read my message on youtube yet jay ever since it changed to google plus, anyway enough of Me rambling, a big thank you from me. DEANO. From the ( black country, colley gate, England. Thanks jay!!!!!;;;)
I have to say Im quite sceptic of these sonos systems. Most recent AV-receivers have tons of funtions including Wifi/Bluetooth playback. And you can add whatever speaker you want to.
theonemister1 Their big point is the multi room system and the fact that multiple wireless speakers work together with no delay (I have SONOS and the no-delay thing is no joke, even on a standard wifi setup.) As for the "add whatever speaker you want" problem sonos offers the CONNECT and CONNECT:AMP to connect existing amps/stereos or speakers (respectively.)
Jay, great video but how much bandwidth of your home network does this system use? If it is running completely wireless then will this affect my internet speeds, some of us don't have GOD internet eg: 100mbit+.. so would this be a drain on resources?
Jay Kay No more than streaming music on your phone, and anyway when using TV sound or streaming from your phone or computer then the data is only transferred internally so zero bandwidth usage in that case.
Hey Jay, since you're on the topic of sound systems which one do you use for your PC? Based on your videos it looks like you have the Logitech Z506, am I correct?
Sure can! Just point the controller software to your iTunes Library location. I actually have my iTunes Library out on a NAS and I can stream all the music from there on any Sonos speaker in the house.
Hi will this only play from dedicated music channels or can it stream from my iphone?... for eg we know it can play itunes etc but if im watching youtube on my phone or even playing angry birds can i have the sound coming from the playbar?
Just a gentle reminder, that price is ALWAYS subjective.... Sure, $1400 is a lot, however I personally know people who have $15,000 TVs and $20,000 sound setups.... just remember that every ones finances and willingness to pay is obviously going to vary. Lets not all be "Price Fairies" now....
One Goat I dont believe I said that this person was using MP3s.....
so true jay, i can't disagree or say anything on other peoples own personal choices, i can only give recommendations.
so yeah, let's just say you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
Barnacules Nerdgasm cough...cough...
Just a reminder... I am always first!
Third. ;p
*edit* wow one comment disappeared I'm second :O
NO ME!!!!!
are you sure?
Sometimes coming first isn't such a good thing
LoL guardians of the galaxy in the background
Oh yeah... I forgot we were talking about sound..... where all of the audiophiles look for reasons to bitch lol.... shame on me
Haha
why would an audiphile person be interested in a soundbar?
Wait....Make a video that everyone on the internet doesn't agree with you on? the audacity....
Hmm i dont know...maybe to listen to music
ilov3mus1cx3 It's pretty danm good quality sound they produce. Maybe not top grade sound, but danm it's a nice system :)
It's been many a year since I've upgraded my living room. Still rocking a Panasonic plasma from about 7 years ago.
i am using Denon AVR-X2100W + Jamo S 526 HCS + Jamo SUB210 and i must say the sound is very clear and good, everything connected, bluray play,ps4,xbox 1
There is no replacement for displacement. I use the full size Paradigm speakers hooked to a Denon. When I play the beginning of Blade Runner for people on it they cry.
I got my playbar last week, and i am in deep love with it!
If I'm going to pay $700-$2000 for an audio setup, I want some analog inputs, not to stream crap AAC files or TH-cam videos from a freaking tablet/phone... o_O
I'll stick to my surround.
You are lost my friend.
***** I never said he did. o-O
But this is a product review/overview/demo, so I'm expressing my critique of my impressions of the product, as per the format, hopefully in an attempt to get a bit more clarity.
I have two Sonos bookshelve speakers and just got the beam. Love it!
bose hooked up to analyze Optical with my phone as a remote good for me .I ordered my system with is 7.1 in 2013 for 1000$ .but still going good I love em.
Nice, I was actually looking into this and didn't expect you to have a review on it. Good stuff!
Great review! I've always been iffy on SONOS with their high price. Would love to try one in my home!
The quality of the Playbar is not the best, but its great for a casual tv room!
You have no idea what you talking about 😂
I've been using Sonos for years..
Glad you did this review! Hope you do more AV stuff in the future!
Jay, keep up the good work man. Love your work!
If your saying that the music is streamed from the phone when you say it makes the phone into the player then you are incorrect, the app is what it says on the tin - a controller. It controls the CPU/whatever in the speakers and the music is streamed directly by the bridge/speaker/playbar
Did you drag your dxRacer to your living room? In that case it must be really comfy.
I have this one at home! It is one of the best speakers ever made!
Hey Jay,
Sonos has a windows application that you can use to control your Sonos system.
Awesome video. Awesome products. I love Sonos and can't wait to give them more of my money.
Please, make some audio test videos. Unlike many of the comments here, this is my dream setup... Simple and good enough!
Seems the volume didn't go up that high even when he set it at max volume.. can it get loud?
I like wires, especially running from 3 power amps into 2 mixers, different signal processors and running bluetooth from my gaming computer into 6-15" ps speakers,2 18" subs and 1 4x12 cabnet that i dont use.Add the Marshall 100watt tube guitar amp just for preamping and its 2 1960B cabnets and im good.
Still like the sonos? Debating to buy this or find something like it a tad cheaper.
Jay, how is the center channel control via optical? I know you only get pass through from certain televisions. I'm assuming yours is one. But this is the main reason I didn't buy the sonos. I'm now considering the Soundtouch 300 and bass because there seems to be some amount of control of dialogue volumes.
Hey Jay
you don't need a phone to set up a sonos with a phone you can also use a computer.
I still have my pioneer 5.1 surround sound home theatre system from '06 almost ten years and still bumping like new...
Sonos is amazing. I try to talk people into it all the time! Sonos great poducts + great company, that is hard to come across these days.
Awesome. Guardians in the background!
Have you (or any others) set up the surround sound...with the Play1or3 as your rear speakers? From what i read, each speaker needs to be plugged into an outlet? Is correct?
***** Well how else would you power the speaker? Imagine how many batteries you would need to buy....
***** I understand, but it's hard to consider this a "wireless" solution...if you still need to run the power cords. So you still need to hide come wires, correct?
***** I am referring more to the back speakers of a surround sound setup. I know the play bar or sub would require a ton of batteries to operate.
***** so wi-fi isn't really wireless, cuz you still need to run the power cords. Your logic.
Akira Ichikawa I know you are trying to be a smartass, but no, not that router itself. I would not consider that wireless. Provides wireless connectivity.
No HDMI inputs means no Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio from blu-rays. $1800 for a non-HD sound system is kinda of a waste.
Blue ray player HDMI in tv > Optical out of tv > optical in of sonos. BAM you get your hd sound.
Jurgen D I do believe there are some sound bars that have HDMI connections
I also hear they are adding DTS support!
I know a few things, considering I get all of the beta hardware and software ;)
That sound system is awesome.
Hey jayz,
Are you going to add a pair of play 1's or play 3's for 5.1 surround? I would like to hear your opinion about the difference with the play 1's or play 3's
It looks cool. I like things that look cool and are minimalist.
If I was fairly wealthy and actually owned a TV I might consider this.
hey wanted some help make a purchase decision.which do you feel is good sound setup for sonos (playbar +2×play1+sub) or (sonos beam + 2*play 5) for a living room 22ft×12ft approx. great work comprehensive reviews.
It was a review and recommendation.. be respectful and appreciative of it,
Hey jay just wondering if you had to do it all over again would you buy the sonos or something different.
Im running two KRK RP8's they sound great!
Nice review! Wouldn't buy something like this personally but I like the review. Keep up the good work!
I have the the Play:1 SONOS speaker and it sounds great however you can't use apps such as TH-cam and iTube for playing music only what is on the phone
Thats where the Playbar comes in.
Great review Jay. Thinking of purchasing one myself.
(Experience: 5 yrs in high end audio/video retail)
PS: I'm not hatin', everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But I suppose you already knew that, Mr. "TwoCents."
The connectivity is exactly what I wanted. I dont regret my purchase. And yeah, there are lesser expensive 4k TVs... I bought one!
#muchrespect
matt brauninger Keep it up and make sure you help others who are learning too. Thats how you thank us :)
^Of course.
matt brauninger Yes but I'd prefer a mid range TV and fantastic sound over a 4k tv with poor sound quality any day.
Why not hook up a 5.1 or 7.1 sound system to a HTPC? Still functions as a media server.
I just use some Logitech Z523 speakers through my HTPC. They aren't pro grade audio, but the sound reproduction in my living room with these is pretty nice with their bi-directional cones. This Sonos setup looks killer though, might have to snag one of these myself at some point.
What is the mouse pad that you had in the black widow keyboard video in interested in the extra wide mouse pads so plz tell me
set this up for a friend of mine the sound is awesome for what it is :) that said ill keep my oldschool 7.1 sys for now just like wrestling with cables
I have the Z906 on Skunkworks, and they sound pretty damn good for $100
Great, informative video Jay!! Keep up the good work :D
Personally I think Sonos would hit the nail if their next product is just different dongles, that you can plug in to any speaker or sub you want, making them as convenient as possible while giving more options to the consumer. I'm not saying the speakers on the Sonos are bad, but it'd be like a DIY Sonos system, that can be cheaper, as well as targeting audiophiles that won't use anything else than their preferred speaker/sub.
ezforsaken Umm... they already did that. They're called the CONNECT and CONNECT:AMP
Hey Jay
I have a question on your thoughts about the Razer Leviathan as a Cheap option and whether its worth the price of £159
I have a 7.1 marantz receiver with yamaha speakers and 2 powered subs, all bought at goodwill for under 150 bucks total. It's hard for me to find an upgrade when I factor in the price I paid.
Primusaur Then dont look for one. If you're happy with your current setup then keep it ;)

Can you use traditional receiver i have Pioneer VSX 1020, reason is because i have many other devices. RoKu, Xbox, PS4, TV, Wii, Home server.
yes you can...buy the amp (which is the connect) and you can add your existing stuff to it and the whole system will work togather
Thanks for the review. One question, can you access the music in iTunes library on your iPhone or MacBook?
thanks
Sure can! Just point the controller software to your iTunes Library location. I actually have my iTunes Library out on a NAS and I can stream all the music from there on any Sonos speaker in the house.
what do you think about the EMF issues/hype?
Hi will this only play from dedicated music channels or can it stream from my iphone?... for eg we know it can play itunes etc but if im watching youtube on my phone or even playing angry birds can i have the sound coming from the playbar?
