    I recently volunteered to tape new construction on a home for friends who don't have the time to get it done themselves. And although it's been more than 40yrs since I worked with drywall, I'm confident it will turn out very nice. I cant thank you enough for sharing your knowledge, as Marcel W commented. The patch from the guy with the sander was much closer to being ready for paint when the sheet was still sitting in the pile of board, the more he does the further he gets from being ready for paint, lol. Stuff like that is so hard to watch but it happens every day, ive fixed thousands of these jobs.

    I have a question for you. I had a water leak in my laundry room and the plumber cut out a few squares in my wall to find the leak. Once the leak was found to be under the concrete and repaired, I had to replace the squares that were cut out and mud them. Well, when talking with my neighbor he tells me he can do the work for me if I wanted him to and not charge me anything. I allowed him to do it and after he finished it I let it dry and he said he would come back over to finish the sanding in a day or two. Well,….the problem I have now is that he works on the road and hasn’t been able to get back over here to finish what he started so, I took it upon myself to try and sand it down and blend it in. The problem I’m having is that when he cut a piece of sheet rock to fill in the hole and mud it, that area of the wall close to the floor is protruding outward somewhat causing a slight bow in the wall. I haven’t seen him in over a week but, I told him of the problem and he says he can fix that. I want to go ahead and finish this project and I do have some knowledge of fixing holes in walls but, my question is, instead of waiting on him to come back over to finish the repair, what or how should I proceed fixing this problem myself? I still have the original piece of sheet rock cut out of the wall and was wondering if I should cut out the repair he started and start over doing it myself or can what he has done be salvaged at this juncture to make the wall straight so I can replace the baseboard? Thanks for any suggestions.

    Okay. It's not ready for paint because he didn't feather it out. Also, because the thick coat may not be fully dry due to thickness. Painting, will leave a noticeable bump on the wall and probable cracking, as it's too thick. It also now has close to raw drywall which can bubble with paint. Perfect timing for this as I'm just getting ready to patch and sand this week. #DOITRIGHT

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought I had covered that but I looked and can’t find a video about it. I need to do that one day. If you are doing a smooth finish or a Level 5 finish with no texture, the problem is the drywall paper does have a grain to it and the drywall mud doesn’t although it will have sanding scratches. So you either have to do a skim coat over everything for a true Level 5 or you can sometimes hide it better with a heavier stipple by using a three-quarter inch nap roller and 2 to 3 coats of paint after priming. Skim coating is the best though.

    I was looking for the tutorial for mixing and I remember seeing a video that talked about how not to get those little plastic shreds into your mud when mixing. I can’t remember where I saw it. I just mixed a bucket with my new paddle mixer and I had plastic shreds throughout. I guess I can just avoid hitting the sides but I thought there was another tip. Can you tell me what that is please?

      I found that it’s more the mixing paddle than the operator. If you have a mixing paddle like this one, amzn.to/3xcW4AX it will scrape bucket worms off the side constantly. If you get a better mixing paddle with rounded edges, like this one, amzn.to/32sHBT8 you won’t have that problem so much. But yes avoid the sides of the bucket as much as you can.

      I was told that if you use the coloured buckets from Home Depot or Lowe’s, you’ll get the coloured flecks in your mud cause the plastic is too soft. You need to get a much sturdier bucket or one with a harder plastic. That way you won’t get the flaking. Using the mixer with rounded edges will definitely help.

      Preferably a white bucket made of harder plastic.

      I pretty much never have problems with bucket worms since switching to a better mixing paddle No matter what color the bucket is. I’m pretty sure my standard mixing bucket is a Home Depot orange bucket. The right tool, used right shouldn’t give you bucket worms.
