Aa someone who has been taping drywall for over 50 years, your video is one of the truest way to tape drywall correctly. Hopefully more people see this.
I was a pro taper for 6 years with the union here in Ontario Canada and your tips are bang on. I love to watch these videos and see other pro's tips and tricks.
I have been watching and using what I have learned, I am so thankful. I am working on one of my rental properties and in just a couple weeks I have saved hundreds $$$. As soon as I finish this project, I will be making a substantial donation to “ The Kilted Guy “ , keep up the videos, they are a money and life saver. Some contractors really stick to their customers, not no more, not me !!!
Noobs really need to listen to this guys advice. I hope he makes real good money from these videos because I have a hard time trying to explain all this to the new guys and this guy just keeps calm and shows you the right way to do things.
Very helpful video. As an amateur, I've only been using a 4 and 6 inch knife in my efforts to fix several sections of drywall around my place, and let's just say that I've been sanding a lot. It's good to know that I can reduce the amount of sanding by using the right tools properly.
Aloha Kilt Guy. I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. One is never too old or experienced in their trade to learn. You are a great teacher. I believe it is important for me to understand your trade since I am a professional painter. After 40 years of painting experience, I can honestly say that I have never encountered a drywall guy like you. As you well know, one can read books, watch on line videos, go to school etc., but real life experience is what matters most. Keep up the good work.
Dear sir, I do agree with you about the use of the 6” knife. One friend of mine named Terry Pucket showed me why he always used the same side of his 6”. The pressure he applied on the right and left side of the knife constantly keeping same side of the 6” facing the wall while taping or spotting nails/screws eventually places a slight bow, almost unnoticed to the casual observer. The 6” then becomes versatile enough to feather & increase it’s diversity.
Good video. I have been in remodeling since 1978. You have good tips. I use a 6, 8 12, and a 14 inch blade. Sometimes a 3" for those small areas. Have you ever done a Monterey texture? This is a unique texture. Using a 12" blade to float your wall with fairly thick mud. Then use the edge of your hand with your pinky finger side, and tap the mud. Kinda like your sponge effect but much deeper valleys. Let it sit for a time then take a 14" blade and knock it down. When dry, apply stain to it. After the stain has dried, lightly sand it. Then apply a clear sealer to it.
I’m not a pro, not yet away. But I’ve done enough plaster work to find out I’m good at it and others have told me I’m good at it. Anyway, your opening thing about the 6 inch knife, I never noticed that they have different shapes. But this explains why I prefer working with one knife over the others. My go to knife is the one with the 90 degree shoulder, I’ve worked with it for a couple of years and never noticed until now, that it’s shaped differently from the other knifes. But now I understand why I like that knife better. Good video, great information.
Very helpful video! Thanks for the detailed explanation of the use for each tool. Never thought to look at the curve angle on the smaller aping knife. And the use of the larger one feathering off the edge exactly what I needed to know.
Trying to do something the wrong way, when you know the right way isn’t that easy…it was humorous watching you try to mess up the mud application, when clearly you know what you’re doing. Cheers.
Goldblatt 6" has been my corner knife for wiping down tape and running corners and angles. I started finishing in 1978 in southwest Florida, wiping down behind two banjos/pro finishers! I used the 8" knife for wiping down flats too. Running on stilts like a Wildman, wiping down behind two very fast banjo runners! Ahhh those were the days! Loved to do condos on the beach! Views were mighty fine! We sprayed textured ceilings using the ole popcorn and vermiculite too. 6 and 7 days a week daylight till dark most days. I used the hawk (we called them buzzards). Seldom using a pan. Ok....always enjoy seeing your videos. Brings back the good ole days!
Liked and subbed. lol Grandpa, dad, uncle and cousins are in drywall. Drywall hanger is not a taper so even a guy like me, that's been around it for 45 + years, learned some things. Thanks!
I like this video. I watched it to see if I taught my friend how to patch all the holes the electric guys bashed into all his walls. We fixed over 120 holes. I taught my friend well how to do this the right way. Thanks . His walls looked great after the paint.
Thank you sooo much! I had done a lot of work but this job I felt so upset because the tape you are showing me how to do it. Thank You and you are amazing for letting and teaching new techniques
Hey man just checking in to see how you’re doing. Thank you for the quality content, it’s always nice to get a quality check on my current techniques by comparing myself to you, The Drywall Don.
I'm not sure which way is up right now. On top of everything else I found out I need $7,000 worth of dental work. Still not sure where we'll be living. Going to look at a camper today and considering living in one for a few months while we look to buy. But we have 7 cats, so need more room than average. Found ONE we liked yesterday, used it was $30,000 for a bumper pull camper. I kind of doubt I can get financed as my finances took a hit in the last couple of years, so everything is up in the air still. Glad I've been able to help you. And now, Back to packing.
Wow thank you so much you explain things very clearly and detailed on how to do things . I have three rooms in my house that need taping and compounding I haven't found somebody as good as you thank you for your advice I will keep watching your videos when I do them . I am a novice but I am good at auto body and that should help me .👏⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Like your stilt dance !!! I used to walk backwards running a 6' browning rod and not think a thing of it. Not now,I am over 70 and no more stilts for this cat !

My BEST knife has two different sides. One is the square corner. The other is the curved. I can do both sides of a inside corner with one tool. Took me about 3 years to learn how to do it properly. But an amazing tool.
There is literally a feeling of smoothness while strafing a corner especially if you coat it properly. This feeling is for the naturally talented. For those that have acquired this skill you will see it as soon as you look down at your pass with no gaps no taps tears or bubbles no reapplying. On to the next one
I don’t think I’ve ever nodded my head so many times while watching a video. I have had that 6” knife for about 20 years. I literally keep it in my back pocket when working. I also use it to scrape clean my other knives. 😀
Thank you for helping me push myself fix the cracks that has been there in my living room for almost a year. I also need to fix the crack in my vaulted ceiling. Are you planning on making video on how to tape the crack in the vaulted ceiling / Walls.
I had a guy on my site mud an entire 15'x 20' wall without any sanding whatsoever! I thought he was the most skilled drywaller ever until I tried to hang my art work and 2 corners of the frame sat flat on the wall but diagonal while the other 2 had 1" gaps in between. I don't think we ever used that man again.
This guy is old school CORRECT! I learned all the techniques he uses when I started as a finisher 30+ years ago. He probably worked with my dad at some point. 🤣
I have a six inch purdy that im gonna be buried with. Thought I lost it the other day, immediately went to buy a replacement. What I didn't realize is how thinned out my old one was. I clean it every day with an orbital. The new one felt terrible. Ended up finding my old one in bucket of mud the next day.
thank you master great teaching skills easy to learn as an ex painter i find it always something to learn . peace. hope you are keeping well , new President new year new things to come,
Best tip I learned about mudding has nothing to do with the tools - it’s mud management! Wipe the inside walls of the tub clean before quitting and you won’t have hard bits to stir into your mud the next day. Scraping up the excess also introduces bits into your hawk or pan. When your mud gets thick or grainy just toss it. Sidewalk chalk for the kids. Use fresh stuff from your clean tub and make your life easy.
Some knives have a little acrew driver at the end in case you want to take the handle off anf screw kn the drywall screw a little without reaching for the impact driver
Another great video from the best DIY Channel on TH-cam. But what do you do if you have a repair that looks like 8:33? Cut out the whole section and do a drywall patch?
Fantastic cheap tool. What material of blade do you prefer? Most of my tools are Marshalltown, and a tad rusty from washing them. Is that an issue? I'm also interested in hawk and trowel, and "buttering" for corners.
I'm a painter but finish plenty of sheet rock. Had this ole boy that worked for me for a while and I cut him loose in an office repaint, thought he could handle it. I dropped by to see how things was goin and it looked like he cut around 150 eggs in half and glued them on the wall. I kid you not. They was on their final coat of paint too. How this guy couldnt see anything wrong is beyond me. The best part is when we sanded them all down they were tiny indents and baby nail holes. Oh yeah 20 minute mud too. I still give him crap about that when I see him.

Great job today. I like the videos that are 10 to 12 minutes long.
Thank you. Now I know the correct way to do drywall.
I was taught with the six...10...12...I've been through many sixes ...one of my favorite tools especially for taping and spotting nails
I really appreciate the skills you have. I’ve put them into practice and they work well. Lord bless you, keep up the good work.
Like your stilt dance !!! I used to walk backwards running a 6' browning rod and not think a thing of it. Not now,I am over 70 and no more stilts for this cat !
Thank you for your input Thom
Great video.

Faster, better job, and ultimately cheaper in the long run.
Especially if you have other trades waiting or worse, a spouse. 😨😆.
It's almost worth the money just to watch how fast really good rockers can hang and tape and sand.
And how little dust compared me or most novices. Because they don't pile it on.
And have an eye for contour, not just smooth to the touch..
👍👍
Nailed it! Thanks so much commenting. I appreciate it and thank you for subscribing.
That 6” knife is also great for scraping off thin ridges or easing them down before the mud sets
Great tips and tricks. Much appreciated!
Thanks for passing on your knowledge to us younger folk
My pleasure!!
With knifes for mudd the width is half of the equation it's also how thick and stiff is the blade, each blade has a specific use and can be used for other purposes but they really shine in proper use.
Your explanation is great
Thanks for the tips and reminders!😃🙂
Thanks for the lessons! Great channel.
Glad you like them! Thank you Peter
How many drywall finishers couldn't resist and clicked on this lol ,not to be missed the 6 inch knife also the best for flinging mud at people
Great information struggled with finishing for years. Wish I found your videos a lot sooner

just like dad use to do :) thanks for the memory.....I DO NOT MISS GYPSUM :P
Best tip I learned about mudding has nothing to do with the tools - it’s mud management! Wipe the inside walls of the tub clean before quitting and you won’t have hard bits to stir into your mud the next day. Scraping up the excess also introduces bits into your hawk or pan. When your mud gets thick or grainy just toss it. Sidewalk chalk for the kids. Use fresh stuff from your clean tub and make your life easy.
GREAT TIPS GUY ALLWAYS LOVE THE VIDEOS FROM DOUG
Thank you!
Great video sir
Thanks, I appreciate that 😎, & Thanks for subscribing!
I mostly do repairs with mesh tape and I start with an 8 and two coats with a 14.
He looks like the gentleman from the "if commercials were honest" videos 😎👍

Some knives have a little acrew driver at the end in case you want to take the handle off anf screw kn the drywall screw a little without reaching for the impact driver
Another great video from the best DIY Channel on TH-cam. But what do you do if you have a repair that looks like 8:33? Cut out the whole section and do a drywall patch?
Yes. That’s in way too rough a condition to float.
Great. Video !!!
"a little caulk a little paint, makes a framer what he aint!" :P
Thanks
Which metal do you prefer? Carbon steel, or stainless, and why?
Stainless. Mostly because they Never rust
"The Most OFTEN Misused Knife" ...proceeds to misuse knife: 5:27 :-)
Great video, I learned quite a bit! Thanks for posting.
Lol 😂
Good job
Wish I could get tinted mud where I live. Drywall places look at me cross eyed when I ask for it.
I don’t ask for it either, I take it the way it comes to me and it’s usually yellow or grayish. Don’t know anywhere you can ask for it honestly.
I just mix a little bit of blue chalk water into it myself.
Buy a bottle of yellow tint and mix it in ,
Red blue or purple (both) Chalk line dust like he said. (Red is more pink)
Great advice thanks
Thanks, glad I could help you out 😎. And thanks for subscribing!
Fantastic cheap tool. What material of blade do you prefer? Most of my tools are Marshalltown, and a tad rusty from washing them. Is that an issue? I'm also interested in hawk and trowel, and "buttering" for corners.
As a DIY guy I taught myself taping, This guy knows his shit. One friendly bit of advice though, the T is silent in "often"... 😁👍
As a DIY guy and qualified linguistic teacher the "T" is not silent in Often. It is a two syllable word Of Ten....... just saying
Great video!
Wished I would have found this 20 years ago
When you feather, do you pit more pressure on the outside edge pushing compound more into the middle?
Yes
I'm a painter but finish plenty of sheet rock. Had this ole boy that worked for me for a while and I cut him loose in an office repaint, thought he could handle it. I dropped by to see how things was goin and it looked like he cut around 150 eggs in half and glued them on the wall. I kid you not. They was on their final coat of paint too. How this guy couldnt see anything wrong is beyond me. The best part is when we sanded them all down they were tiny indents and baby nail holes. Oh yeah 20 minute mud too. I still give him crap about that when I see him.
Been there, done that, lol
Great stuff, it did
And, Thanks for subscribing and helping me hit the 100,000 subscriber mark by my birthday on June 10th, 2021. I truly appreciate it. Guy
Why the push off at the top when coating screws?
It’s just my technique
