Hop On, Hop Off in Panama City?

  • We chose to book our own Hop On Hop Off bus pass, and we'll show you how it worked out. It was another hot and humid day, so of course we had to take advantage of places with cold drinks and/or air conditioning.
Once you've watched the video, we'd like to get your take on whether you would choose to do the same thing, or find another option. Enjoy!

I visited in 2018 and had the same experience with the Hop On Hop Off bus.

So close! We’re in Cartagena. Thanks for the video. They have the Al Alma coffee houses in Medellin and Cartagena too although I didn’t see the same empanadas. Very good.

They have new viewing galleries built at Miraflores Locks now; and they are still updating the visitors' centre/museum (which was excellent, so i hope it will be as good when completed). I would only use the bus on Sunday, when the traffic is lighter! I would only recommend the bus for the first day, just to orientate yourself (it's what I do on other places). Your idea of hiring a taxi for a tour is a good one (if you can avoid "gringo pricing")

Oh, and having a local helps. for example, telling you to watch for the crocodiles basking on the mud off to the side of the Miraflores Locks, or the marine iguanas you see if you walk to Panama Viejo ruins (and not take the courtesy trailer)

We hope to return and have more time in the area. Unfortunately, when on a cruise, we only have part of a day to spend exploring. Hopefully your comment will provide others with additional information to research before deciding on their day trip. Thanks!

I'm staying in Amador and was wondering where I can purchase a ticket in person, and if it's possible to purchase a 48 hour ticket, but use it non-consecutively, because we're going to alternate between day trips and time in the city.

We always just search online to get the most up to date info. That's what I would try. Enjoy!

I'm a panamenian and I wouldn't recommend the bus. So much to see in 1 day? No. They should know better. Looks like they are amateur travelers. Also, you need at least 7 days to be able to see everything with plenty of time to go back to the hotel and take a break, shower, nap and rest.

Unfortunately, being on a cruise ship dictated how much time we had during this visit. Many visitors only see this lovely country on a cruise stop, so having limited time can be a problem. Check out some other videos, where you'll see that we usually stay in a place for a month or longer. 😊

Don't be so negative about where the bus stops they have their schedule to keep

You're correct, they do have a schedule to keep. Unfortunately, the printout we received from them showed something different than what was actually done, so it made it challenging for those with limited time. We know for next time, though.
