Thanks for telling people that raising and keeping chickens is not easy or cheap. I think a lot of people do not realize what goes into raising/growing their food.

That's true in start up for sure , but food security is what it is these days . 1/4 of my garden is producing food for chickens I don't even own lol , but they are the best eggs ever . Do your research b4 you get any chicks and make that commitment!

Yeah buddy. It runs me about .48 per each so 6 dollars a dz. For me I love the flavor of the egg. Store bought do not taste or smell as good. But it a'int "cheep" 😏🤠

I gave in n went to ts yesterday. The prices were double what I paid 3 months ago 😢. I asked the cashier where the chicks r ( I hatch my own but I like looking) she groaned said they only got 50 in the day before n within 10 minutes sold out. 😮I thanked God all the way home for my gardens to feed them n my teeny incubator to keep me supplied..neighbors said 2 years ago I'm nuts. I've had chickens for 14 ish years n gardens everywhere. NOW 2 back neighbors have birds n roosters n 2 others bought chick coups 😂 not so nutty now huh? 🤣🤣🐔

When I started raising chickens a bag off feed was under $10... now it's up to nearly $25 and the bags are really missing some of the nutritional value that they had back when I started. I'm sticking with it because I raise a dual purpose breed that's still economicly doable considering the cost of organic meats... and eggs at $6/dozen. Still... I've shifted quite a bit in my gardening and my methods of feeding my chickens. I plant a lot more squashes and sun flowers and now use maggot buckets for free protein.

You are so right! We got a few fluffy chicks last year (in late April) who have been providing us 3 to 4 eggs daily since mid-September. We've felt so great about it all, not only did one of our neighbors decide to get a few of their own, but I will be trying to hatch out some fertile eggs for 2 other households to hopefully get a tiny flock each. I just love watching them be chickens! After seeing the issue you had in your incubator, my honey said, "Maybe we should leave our incubator on the back porch!" 🤭 I told him that shouldn't happen, as long as we candle at the right times and take out any that aren't developing... As if I know anything (because I only know from my research. This will be a first for us to hatch anything other than "sea monkeys"!) LOL

For years the youngest insisted upon Easter egg hunts outside in the yard; come Easter morning sun, drizzle, rain, hail, pelting rain, etc... While hard boiled so not quite so bad, every spring and summer following a bad weather Easter morn, we and especialy the lawn mower fpund Easter eggs sometime as far into July. There was one tucked under a fern we all remember 'cause it was gag elicting odiferous.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I Love the beginning dressed as a chicken!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍 I laughed so hard! ♥️ I absolutely Love raising our chickens!! 5 years now… it’s been great. However your right you gotta plan good! I have 3 Leghorns that think free range means jumping our 4 ft. Fence and enjoy my neighbors yard. Everyday at 1:45-2:00 pm 3 of them jump the fence and I have to call them back.
We also have 3 khaki Campbell's and 3 Indian runners! That gets very messy . It’s a lot of work to keep the coops clean and properly care for them! We keep our dirty Do-Do for our garden but the neighbors will complain of the smell from time to time so that’s unfortunate but soon it will be tilled in our veggie garden . It’s such a blessing to have our ladies! I enjoy them all.

Those incubators are known for not having the right temperature. And when I bought mine, I bought it knowing that so I went ahead and bought a additional thermometer and sure enough it was a couple of degrees off. But I candle them after day ten and then again at lockdown and remove any that aren’t developing so I don’t have explosions. 😅

I'm in Tasmania, Australia. A couple of my friends also had a bad summer for eggs so perhaps it is the food. Unfortunately, if I want to make my own chicken mix, I still have to buy the majority of the ingredients which undoubtedly are genetically modified and sprayed. We don't have the luxury of organic grain crops here 😕. The farmer nextdoor to me aerial sprayed his canola crop with chemicals, which is less than 1km from me just at the start of summer, so perhaps that also had something to do with the conundrum, given my shocking year for veggies 🤷.

Mike and Lacey, would you do a little clip on how you like/dislike your bielefelders please. I'm very interested in learning some more about the breed.

I love how your family helps out with the chores! Some mighty fine future farmers there. :) Have you ever gave the thought of raising your own meal worms to feed your chicks and chickens with? That could play a significant role in their nutrition, and great too to help composting, and fishing. They are simple to raise. It's just a thought. The little one is growing so fast! :)

Oh my goodness, the egg explosion!! I honestly pray we don't have to deal with that but I'm sure we will someday. I have a terrible confession. I made deviled eggs for Easter and when I went to peel one🤯🫣it was a forming chick!!! Oh boy i felt so terrible.

My incubator has been running nonstop for months! Everyone wants eggs and chicks now, last month we had a mishap with the power going out just hours after the eggs went into lock down...11 hatched but only 4 survived 😱😭
