@Eric Estrada i kinda lost interest in tennis these days. i loved it during this period, it was the golden age of tennis with so many charismatic players and epic matches that i honestly don't think will ever be matched again. hewitt, roddick, safin, federer, agassi and sampras still playing great towards the end of their careers, and several others. i watched a few matches recently with a friend and it just didn't excite me the way it did back when i was really into it. first tournament i ever watched was the french open, i think in 2000, maybe 99, and after that i was hooked and watched every major for the next 8-10 years, not sure exactly how many years, but i gradually began to lose interest when what i consider the golden age of tennis came to an end.

Sampras would come out of retirement to teach those who dare a lesson or two.
yeah, during this time he was possibly the strongest player ever mentally. the following year he beat federer and hewitt back to back and in the hewitt match he was down a set and a break and it looked as though hewitt was gonna run right through him, but safin stayed focused and turned it around. in the federer match he pulled off a miraculous point to save a match point. i can't remember if it was the federer match, but in one match i'm pretty sure he saved 3 match points in a row in a tie break, i think 2 of those points on the opponent's serve. i don't think any other player in the world could have pulled all of that off.
I think Marat Safin problem was that he took too much time against players who were great but no in his class. Because if you see Marat he is the most devastating offensive baseliners to ever play the sport. He can hit the ball huge from both wings . A decent Kick Serve and sumblime 1st Serve. If you look at his tactics he should have attacked Andy's backhand . Which was not in the same level with players like Safin Nalbandian Davydenko etc. Please note this was only Andy's comparison with Marat . he is a great player no doubt.
Thanks for the upload! A great match. Center Court looked to being played faster than today, which I like. You can really see the pace these top players have on a faster court. Amazing.
@DS The 2005 Australian Open SF against Hewitt was the last time we had the powerful Roddick. He kind of returned that form in 2009 but just not as powerful.
I think a lot of it was by choice; the game started getting played with a ton of spin and Roddick decided that it was best for him to do the same. Unfortunately his game wasn't really built for more topspin shots and longer rallies so he sort of fell by the wayside as time went on.
@@JimKirk1 The funny thing is that he could sustain longer rallies based on this match and come up with a finishing blow. You can hit pretty flat and penetrating and be consistent as long as your footwork allows it. Problem for Roddick is that he lost a lot of speed as well.

na, impossible... cos in that time came federer. the best in the moment. he won cup masters in 2003 and then started all his tremendous tennis. beating everyone and wining all finals in gs. rodick lost wimbledon 2004 and 05 vs roger. and 2009. but 2004 is the beggining of federer tennis. only safin had a little chance vs federer. like in australian 2005.

Goldfine actually Roddick was always a defensive player. However he used to unload on his shots. Here, you can see in the stats that Roddick's % serve is low. He improved his serve from 2004, but everything else declined (I think his BH was always ok, not great but not bad).

I really wish Roddick never decided to fire Brad Gilbert after 2004 and change his forehand under his new coach. His old forehand was so fearsome and made him such a threat when he was in form, blasting winners left and right. I know he wanted to become more consistent and not make as many errors, but it seemed like that switch to a slower and much loopier forehand really lowered his ceiling as a player 😔
Roddick simply couldn’t beat naturally gifted tennis players. He was like Chang or a stich or a Todd Martin rated player. His one major was a very suspect run.

Um. My opinion of roddick and safin changed over the years; i thought roddick was underrated and safin was overrated. I came to the conclusion that anyone can beat Federer, Sampras, Djokovic and Agassi in grand slams is a real champ. Roddick was playing a faaaaar superior talent, even if safin was coming off a massive injury and long matches. Form is temporary, class is permanent. Roddick supposedly untalented is going head to head on his 3rd best slam against a top talent in safin. At the end of the day, roddick has the better serve and forehand. Safin was far better technically in every other department, and safin had a great serve and a very good forehand. I don't think i could compare safin with any sportsman i have seen. Maybe ronaldinho??
I think if Roddick maintained this power game and added his improved variety throughout the years, he might’ve been one of the greatest players ever with 10 plus slams, or at least 5. He lost to Federer in his early years because he lacked variety, and lost to Fed/Rafa/Djoker and many other tough players because he lost SO much power.
I think it's funny that Roddick here is going toe to toe with a much better player, and is matching Safin in terms of power. 6 years later he's getting bullied by fucking Tipsarevic, Lu, Lopez and Ferrer at Wimbledon. Lol.

Courts in Australia aren't slower now than they were during this period. Only during that brief 2010-2012 spell.

It would break down and he'd lose over time to players who could keep the ball in. They added more loopy spin. It's an awesome finishing shot though.
