This time I cheered for Marat but clearly Roger was too good. Some one shouted "Come on Marat" and.Marat replied "I try I try". That's what I remembered.

Roger is the maestro, but Marat was an absolutely monumental tennis player, who like Nalbandian beat the world‘s best tennis players several times. He was in the semi-final or final of grand slam tournaments no less than 7 seven times, and he won the Australian Open and the US Open beating Lleyton Hewitt and Pete Sampras, the latter winning no less than 14 grand slams, a record which stood for many years. I loved Marat‘s cool, matter-of-fact style and his modest attitude. In my eyes, he was one of the best ever tennis players. In this video however, he just came up against possibly THE best ever tennis player, the Maestro himself, but he was in fact able to beat Roger on two occasions during his career.

Marat and Nalbandian as well as Phillipoussis could have been better than Federer if they wanted it.

This is probably the best early 2005 quality of a tennis video on TH-cam

Federer was really seeing the ball that day. Got away with a lot of huge cuts at it. Just murdering it. Quite a few of his shots slapped the net card, then crawled right over the top.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 14 and was discovering a tennis player to watch. I hd to wake up at 5 in the morning for the final, set up an alarm and woke up before it just out of sheer excitement.
Looking retrospectively, at 33, i can't believe Federer was playing with such confidence and aggression at just 23. Insane!
I don't get one thing though, why was his head at the time seem to stay fixated towards the plce the racquet made contact, on the forehand? I think it's more pronounced than during later years.

I think the poor video quality makes it seem like it's out. But I don't think it was, otherwise I'm pretty sure McEnroe would've said it 😉

This NOT 2004 AO encounter---which was won in 9-7 in the fifth by Safin and a semifinal at that.

@@AS-js7kb You as right. Safin was still dragging from five setter over Agassi in 2004----
