My favorite quote is so easy to remember. Aaron & Laura (Garden Answer) always say this about planting trees. "Plant it low, it won't grow. Plant it high, it won't die."
Here’s a tip from Aus. We dig square holes for our trees - for exactly the same reason. Round holes encourage the roots to follow the circle shape of the nursery pot the tree was in. Square holes deter the roots from doing so and encourage the roots to spread outwards and downwards, for better stability.
Robert Pavlis of Garden Myths wrote an article that square planting holes were a myth as the only scientific study he found showed it made no difference. Additionally it wasn't too long ago when I saw someone post a photo online of girdled roots that were growing at right angles as they girdled into a square shape.
The hole shape doesn't matter. It's the fact that the hole is bigger than the root ball. The backfilled soil will be looser and the roots will start to spread into the loftier area then push through the more compacted dirt as the roots age. If your soil is compacted and the hole is just big enough to fit the root ball the new roots theoretically can hit the very compact walls of the hole and continue circling. Most of the time the roots are spreading regardless....just because they are searching for water.
Your teaching moments are a big part of why your channel has grown so much. I had no ifea about planting hole shapes, native vs compost, etc. Thank you!!!
I like doing mostly native soil occasionally I'll throw in a handful of compost or garden soil . Usually closer to the top so nutrient seeps in. Always nice soil on top to slow weeds
What a breath of fresh air.........can't beat organization alongside cleanliness. Your caring for your property has really shown through from the getgo. Love the location chosen for your beautiful maple. Thumbs up indeed!!!
Love your explainations. You are such a great educator, from the Fall colors to planting and supporting the tree. It will be exciting to see that tree grow!
Learned something new from today's video. I didn't realize that the shape of the hole for the root ball makes a difference in how the roots grow. Thank you Janie! ❤
Wow that maple is gonna be so pretty .. Love how your yard is coming along and being able to enjoy the process as you share with us. Very informative vidoe thanks..❤
Love your thoughts on leaf peeping. Here at 8700 feet in Colorado we get to watch the glorious aspens change to a magnificent gold. What glory. Some years...sometimes it will rain too much or we'll have severe frosts that ruin the golden show. I love leaf peeping. Not on weekends though... the crowds are too much!!
Thank you for the clear and concise tutorial on tree planting. I especially appreciate your advice about breaking up the soil in a smooth wall in clay soil. South Texas soil for sure!
Great video, Janey. Regarding taking a tree back to bare root, that's really important if you're planting ball and burlap trees that are often grown in solid clay. Water will have a hard time moving between your native soil and the solid clay around the root ball. Vice versa, if the root ball gets saturated, water won't want to drain into the nearby but completely different soul type (similar soil hydrology issue as a perched water table -- it's why putting gravel at the bottom of garden pots isn't recommended anymore.)
This was so interesting. Thank you for pointing out that there is no right way for gardening just different was of doing it. So many new gardeners in my local gardening group feel overwhelmed by how many people say “This is the way to do something all the other way are not good. “ new gardeners need to hear this more often.
The good thing is after you have gardened for a few years, you just realize that anyway after trials and errors. I was fortunate to have a family member who was a farmer and gardener and I learned early on.
That maple tree is going to look gorgeous there! The leaves are just starting to turn color here in New Hampshire. Fall foliage peeping is so much fun here in New England! 🍁🍂
Janie, come to Apple Hill later this Fall, and you'll get beautiful fall color! I'm in Pollock Pines and live for the trees changing colors! It's gorgeous 😍
That is going to be so pretty! Janey, you are an amazing teacher, you have a wealth of knowledge and don’t hesitate to share it. As I always say your property gets more beautiful with every video!
What a great combo for my morning coffee. DPWR discussing fall candles, tree planting, and fall tree color. I'm sitting here with coffee, viewing the latest video, and burning my "Falling Leaves" candle. Perfection!
Good morning all. A big huge yo Monty that is no longer wearing his 🍩collar-donut. A morning biology class about fall trees🍁. Thank you Janey and happy planting cool morning 🌳. Having my coffee☕️ from my desk .
I actually think the “root flare” you showed is a graft union since this tree is likely grafted onto another maple rootstock. I think the sucker that was on there is from that rootstock. In terms of planting, it’s the same idea that you don’t want the union below the soil because it encourages the union to grow suckers. Just thought you might want that information! You should be able to tell if it’s grafted if it looked swollen at the base from a cut and not just natural growth.
I always enjoy your videos with my morning coffee; great way to stat my day. Today, I especially enjoyed the information you shared. I am a science geek myself (my career was in biotechnology) and I enjoy gardening. So, I really appreciate your attention to details. I look forward to seeing your maple tree in the seasons ahead. Thank You!
Well good morning janey monty and jason. Monty says yep, mom, you're planting it like you are supposed to looks Good to Me. Monty is such a good companion. One more beautiful task completed. Have a blessed day the Oklahoma gardener.😊
Thanks! That was very interesting learn! I live in North Carolina and we always get excited about the fall leaf change. I learned more about what is happening from you in moments than I've learned/understood in years! Great video!
in biology class, it was said that the trees also take in the chlorophyll into the trunk bc it takes a lot of energy to produce it, so they want to preserve it. then, the other two become visible more 😊
If you read on tree care from universities and arborists, you will find girdling roots to be a very common problem that can be avoided. Root defects formed while the tree was grown in the container never sort themselves out, they continue to grow and change but unlike us they cannot move once they’ve grown. It seems to be best to shave off the perimeter of the root ball and its underside, this fully eliminates any circling roots and makes it so all new roots are growing radially out from the tree. Along with this its very important to remove the soil from the base of the tree until you see many roots emerging from the trunk (not one or two straggly ones) and to plant the rootball above grade. While this will be work, in the end it pays off as most tree failures are caused by improper planting, not the care after.
They are beautiful trees , I planted one a few yrs ago , it isn't doing very well, leaves start turning yellow when the heat of summer comes on, no drip system but I soak it every morning.
I really love the idea of this tree, but I looked it up, and it does not grow in my zone 10. I have a Florida maple, but it doesn't change color like the orange glory. Enjoy your new beautiful tree. Can't wait to see it change color.
Does the October Maple tree produce sap and if so, does it bring pest and will it drop sap on my plants or making any of the foliage sticky underneath? My neighbor has a maple tree and it looks sticky all the time.
Janey, the maple is my absolute favorite tree but I have been hesitant to buy one because of the extreme heat temps in my Texas Zone 9. I've been told that they will scorch in our hot summers. Won't it be too hot for your maple in that total sun spot in the summer?
You should take the stake off so the tree can move. It’s the movement that causes the base to thicken. If it gets excessively windy then you can temporarily restake
My master gardener neighbour says you can stake in a way that allows some movement in the wind, then remove the tree after a season, once the tree is rooted in. I see that Janey did remove the transport stake and is going to stake with the recommended method.
LOL Jason hides out inside until all the heavy lifting is done, then comes out to say it's crooked. HaHa a perfect supervisor. Just teasing ... of course.
My favorite quote is so easy to remember. Aaron & Laura (Garden Answer) always say this about planting trees. "Plant it low, it won't grow. Plant it high, it won't die."
Love watching Laura and Aaron and family !!!
Love Garden Answer! 😍

I'll have to remember this, makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the tip !!
I recently heard about this. It does make sense!

Happy you have gotten your trees in, the lighting changes up the night I’m sure, it looks great on the espalier ❤❤❤❤❤

💯
Vermont and Maine are definitely worth seeing in fall at least once in your life!
The lawn idea is great and well needed.
I like doing mostly native soil occasionally I'll throw in a handful of compost or garden soil . Usually closer to the top so nutrient seeps in. Always nice soil on top to slow weeds

Once you get all the trees planted, I hope you do a video showing all of their locations on your property. Very exciting!
Love your explainations. You are such a great educator, from the Fall colors to planting and supporting the tree. It will be exciting to see that tree grow!
Learned something new from today's video. I didn't realize that the shape of the hole for the root ball makes a difference in how the roots grow. Thank you Janie! ❤
Hi, love your videos, did I miss your kitchen remodel being finished?
We have 8 maples and they are glorious in the late fall, here in Sacramento. 🍁🍂
You’re so smart I love your show I love the tree thing on the wall your inspiration is beyond glorious
Thank you Janey! I learned several things!!!
The digging stick is a crowbar. Gorgeous tree.
Wow that maple is gonna be so pretty .. Love how your yard is coming along and being able to enjoy the process as you share with us.
Very informative vidoe thanks..❤
One of those cute little striped awnings would look adorable over your office door 🏡

Hi Janey 🌺. Well done . The October Glory Maple its so pretty and it looks amazing in its place . Have a lovely day .🌺🌻🌺
What a difference that tree makes already !!!
Thank you for the clear and concise tutorial on tree planting. I especially appreciate your advice about breaking up the soil in a smooth wall in clay soil. South Texas soil for sure!
Forget the shade. It’s the gorgeous fall color.
Oh yes, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and upstate New York. Have the most gorgeous fall color.
Here, where I live in the west coast rain forest, we have tons and tons of trees. It’s so interesting to hear about planting trees in a hot climate.

October Glory… is a stunning tree! Nice after thought😂😂
Beautiful! The tree immediately adds depth to your garden
Good morning all. A big huge yo Monty that is no longer wearing his 🍩collar-donut. A morning biology class about fall trees🍁. Thank you Janey and happy planting cool morning 🌳. Having my coffee☕️ from my desk .
The plantings in front of your office are absolutely gorgeous ❤❤❤
Lots of rain here in the East Bay Hills of the SF Bay Area this morning! Yeah!!
Hi Courtney! Hi Janey!
Always the rebel, Janey plants an October Glory Maple in September! 😜🇨🇦
Gorgeous tree and lots of great planting information! Another great video, Janey!
Thanks Janey, I learned a few things more about tree planting ! You must be very excited to see it grow and change colours :)
I have one of those trees in my yard and yes, it is a beautiful tree, especially in the fall! You will enjoy it!
Great tree planting … will be fun to watch it grow. We all need more trees!

Tree philosophy: Plant it high, it won't die, plant it low, it won't grow.
A beautiful tree and thank you for all the tree planting tips! 🍁🍂

Maple and birch trees are my favorite in the fall, it just makes the season! It's going to be beautiful 😊🍁
What a nice addition!
Janey, before planting all your trees did you have the utility lines marked by the city?
Love this tree. Just my opinion but I think your pup needs a friend to play with. Ever think of another dog? Happy gardening 🌿
You do such a clear and detailed information on planting a tree! Thank you!

How do you make your coffee? It looks so good
I really love the idea of this tree, but I looked it up, and it does not grow in my zone 10. I have a Florida maple, but it doesn't change color like the orange glory. Enjoy your new beautiful tree. Can't wait to see it change color.
Thanks, Janie, this was a very informative video!
Great insights 😊 Your trees will be beautiful 😊
Very informative Thank you
I love maple trees, i have 3 on my property but I notice they have above ground roots. Not sure if all Maples have that trait.
Thank you for teaching us everything! The tree is absolutely stunning! What boots do you wear?
Beautiful
Great video!🌳M
Mapple is pretty😊 huggicates Janey!😊
Monty: Aaah a new LAVATREE...😂😂😂😂
Great info Janey. Thank you!
Nice 🌳video!
Thank you for this, Janey! I've learned more today about trees than I have in years watching other channels! ❤
🙏🏻
That's going to look beautiful!🍁
Won't the tree shade your solar pannels?
Mine was purple ash.😊
You so nicely present great educational info. Hopefully Monty will not be leg lifting on it.
Hot tub time is pretty close 😊
Geese !
Does the October Maple tree produce sap and if so, does it bring pest and will it drop sap on my plants or making any of the foliage sticky underneath? My neighbor has a maple tree and it looks sticky all the time.
Did you e er finish the kitchen?
Janey, the maple is my absolute favorite tree but I have been hesitant to buy one because of the extreme heat temps in my Texas Zone 9. I've been told that they will scorch in our hot summers. Won't it be too hot for your maple in that total sun spot in the summer?
Did you and the goose conspire to squawk at the same time you tamped down the soil with your foot? 🤣 This was very informative.
Could you please list the names of trees you recently purchased?
Have you decided not to follow the Michael Glassman design? I don’t think he put a tree there. Always enjoy your videos.
Could you root that sucker and make another tree?
❤
You should take the stake off so the tree can move. It’s the movement that causes the base to thicken. If it gets excessively windy then you can temporarily restake
My master gardener neighbour says you can stake in a way that allows some movement in the wind, then remove the tree after a season, once the tree is rooted in. I see that Janey did remove the transport stake and is going to stake with the recommended method.
Janey said that she was removing the transport stake and then putting 3 stakes and supports to allow movement for trunk growth and strength.

Jealous of your “cool down”
