I love how decisive you are in your reviews and how you explain things. I really think you're one of, if not the best Knife reviewer in the community. Thank you for all your love and time!
Never owned or used any other Chris Reeves's in my life! Been looking at them for over ten years but just pulled the trigger a couple months ago on a large sebenza big oak inlays with a polished magnacut blade and this thing slices!! I'm in love with magnacut. I have a Mcness 3.5 in magnacut, Protech mordax, tactile maverick etc etc and I love magnacut at 63/64 hrc. I love that I live in the south and I can't get it to rust also is amazing!
The high toughness and hardness of Magnacut really compliments each other which is rare because we usually don't have both of them on a steel with the added corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening. This is gonna allow them to make thinner edge profiles that stand up to rolling or chipping which is great because it's going to cut like a lightsaber. I already own 2 knives in Magnacut and I plan on getting more. Love this steel so much!
Just ordered my first sebenza. My first Chris Reeves's ever. I ordered the large sebenza with bog oak inlays with the polished magnacut blade and I'm so stoked!!! It's crazy to think I have over 300+ knives and not one is a Chris Reeves's or a benchmade! Well until tomorrow that is. I have other knives with magnacut w/63-64 hrc and they're incredible! So I'm so pumped to get the sebenza with a 63-64 hrc magnacut blade w/ hollow grind! Great video there Erica!
I've been loving the magnacut on my mini rsk. 63-64hrc in a production knife is awesome. Hope they do more magnacut sprint batches of the full sized and minis for the people that weren't able to snag them on their first runs.
I believe crk already had the s45vn stock and wanted to process the steel they had in supply as Tim seemed pretty in love with magnacut and was quick to switch once the s45vn supply was done
Chris Reeve’s big thing is rust. I’ve heard him mention how corrosion resistant S35VN was and how important that was for his customer at that time. My Mnandi S45vn blade had rust spots after being in the ocean for a day.
Love to hear magnacut is a big improvement! 45 definitely is longer lasting than the 35. Anyone who says crk isn’t worth the money haven’t used their knives long enough to get the value form them. Funny to read the comments.
@@ericasedc haha I get that. I bought enough knives chasing one, that I ended up with like 40 mid grade knives. I sold them all and now I have 5 crks. A sebenza never leaves my pocket
Great video. Started collecting 8 or 9 years ago whittled my collection down to a few and carried since and just got back into it a few months ago. So many options now this is a really good breakdown. And reeves never used to appeal to me but theyve grown on me quite a bit. The price tag is just ouch but with the magnacut it seems like a goal worth setting
I'm 67 years old and have a boxful of very old and very new knives. Most Spyderco sprints in good steels ...... yet a 140 dollar Stretch 2 in K390 has pretty much shelved them all for a good while now. Magnacut vs K390, whatcha think Erica?
A very good start to the month long test. Now to see if the stropping holds up close to the time the factory edge dulled. The TRM strop is very nice and should last a lifetime.
I like that they’re doing their Magnacut well. One of my gripes with my 21 is the pretty crappy heat treat. It doesn’t hold an edge for shit. I’m waiting on the Inkosi to get the Magnacut treatment and then I’ll get my second CRK.
S30vn along with every other steel is stronger the softer it is, to a certain extent of course. CRK was intended to be sold around the world and be capable. Although, I agree about about the edge retention with “superior” steels you’re S.O.L. if you break the only tool you brought with you. CRK seems to meet a sense of balance that is achieved by so few.
Great video as always. I've been waiting to get some quality opinions on the Magnacut. I'm glad to hear you think Spyderco did theirs well. I picked up the Native 5 with Magnacut and I love it so far except for the FRN destroying my work pants if I clip it and the blade being such a fingerprint magnet. Hopefully they'll do a different finish on their next Magnacut model. I definitely appreciate the corrosion resistance benefits from that steel being down here in Texas with how the humidity can get to whatever I'm carrying.
Thanks for the review. Glad to hear Chris Reeve is doing a good job with the Magnacut steel. Not to make behemoth knives feel bad*, but I do like my BG42 Sebenza and will continue using it, although that Magnacut sounds terrific. [*I saw his comment of 4 days ago.]
Found another recommendation from you, 17dps on the magnacut, with that strong edge will watch your sharpening videos and find the zone, they are mostly all different, and like you said make sure they are same in each blade angles... have a great ling week end !!! The worst part of it was Chris Reeve’s influence on how they heat-treated for many years. As in, the man not the company (Ann and Tim Reeve more or less control CRK now). He insisted on running S35VN deliberately soft so people would be be able to sharpen it easier. I could kinda understand this when CRK went from S30V to S35VN, but when we actually learned to sharpen, you were just tearing your hair out, hoping he’d change his mind. When he left and Ann and Tim started heat-treating S45VN to what you hoped, and I really got to put my Large Inkosi Insingo through the ringer, it was almost as though they had to re-learn that S45VN, while a solid steel, was not really what you wanted on a good work knife (in fairness, I do see why they’re still using it on the Mnandi and Impinda). So when they announced they were doing Magnacut and that Chris would not be dictating the HRC, I was optimistic and pre-ordered my very first Small 31 as a warehouse cardboard slayer. It arrives today, and I can hardly wait to get slicing! Keep up the good work!

Hi. Great video! I'm curious: what is the HRC on your 21 in S35VN? I have a large 21 from 2018, s35VN and the HRC is 59-60. Holds an edge well sharpened at 20 DPS and I can bring the edge back pretty easily with honing steel and/or stropping. I heard the earlier runs of S35VN were softer like you said.
@ericasedc Thanks for the reply. Magnacut may finally be my reason to purchase a 31. I've been holding off because I like my 21 so much and the "upgrades" on the 31 didn't seem worth it to me. On a side note, I have a Strider SMF with CTS-XHP that seems to hold its edge forever, is easy to bring back to hair popping sharp, and doesn't chip like the 20CV on one of my other folders.
Hello Erika. Thank you very much for the video. I understand everything about the MagnaCut. Just one question : does the MagnaCut have a better grip on cut materials ? For what ? Erica really good video and it’s nice to see that CRK is running their magnacut at 63-64 hrc. The only thing that I disagree with is that you said you have to many knives 🤣🤣😂😂. Thanks for sharing
I'm excited to try a magnacut sebenza. I have a s45vn sharpened and finished on a 600 grit then stropped. Seems to lose its edge fairly fast after processing quite a bit of cardboard. Still love it though. Strops right back. Edit- I also don't have it sharpened to 15 per side. It's more like 23 or so
So you didn't need to reprofile the Magnacut out of the box? That's nice! CRK knives feel like dinosaurs in the knife world. But maybe the magnacut modernizes them a bit... Hey birds are dinosaurs though right?

Been super interested in CRK's, but have yet to buy one. Yes the price is up there, but that hasn't been the reason i haven't pulled the trigger. I'm like you..I use my shit.. Yes i collect knives, but I've never sold or traded any any of them. I use them.. Some more than others. Fucking up a $300 or less knife doesn't bother me... It might at $500 to $700 😂
Great video. Helpful info, thanks. I think you should sharpen your new MagnaCut at 15º because a narrower angle is just way better, as long as you haven't reached the narrow angle chippy-ness given how you use your knife. (Larrin Thomas says that sharpening angle is even more important than both steel type and heat treatment in determining how a knife performs.)
Completely hype. You don't need a "better" steel. What you need is a better heat treat. Which if some of you don't know crk are horrible with their heat treats. I have a crk is magnacut and a benchmade with s30v and the s30v on benchmade out performs the crk magnacut but a long shot.
I recently got a large sebenza 31 in magnacut. It seems like there’s a portion of the edge that just rolls and/or chips at the slightest use. I’ve touched up the edge a number of times and no matter what I do, that same portion of the blade gets damaged almost immediately. Combine that with the other issues I’ve had with this knife… First Chris reeve, last Chris reeve.
I miss the old S30V The S35 was nothing more than a way for them to manufacture more blades that was easier on their equipment regardless of the claim of it being for the end users ability to sharpen. FOH

Yes i collect knives, but I've never sold or traded any any of them. I use them.. Some more than others. Fucking up a $300 or less knife doesn't bother me... It might at $500 to $700 😂
Hahaha I gotchyu!
The knife makers should have followed Larrins advice, I have a Dawson MC I need to test but pretty sure it's soft around 61.
мне очень понравился опсолютно чёрный складная модель
Thanks!
от всего сердца, мне очень приятно что ещё есть девушки которые любят правильные вещи и умеют ими пользоваться
Thanks!
Completely hype. You don't need a "better" steel. What you need is a better heat treat. Which if some of you don't know crk are horrible with their heat treats. I have a crk is magnacut and a benchmade with s30v and the s30v on benchmade out performs the crk magnacut but a long shot.
CRK heat-treats between 63-64 HRC which is the gold standard for heat treating it according to its creator.
That’s an hilarious statement because benchmade steel is always soft as shit lol
Lol this guy is in denial because he spent 500 on a s30v benchmade 😂
really good vid
@@robreadinger5340 i appreciate that!
What a bummer!
Its cool when women like knives. My wife doesn't get me, but she accepts it, as I don't get her bag collection.
Guess it works then!🤣
Hello 🌹🍰☕💐🌷
Hi!
👍
🎉
Why can't CRK do a knife with a proper modern lock?
Thanks for taking time to watch and comment!!!!
Magnacut is awesome. Chris Reeve knives are overpriced beyond belief though
Chris Reeves is the Rolex of knives. The knives will perform great, but it's really just bragging rights and knife bling.
I miss the old S30V
The S35 was nothing more than a way for them to manufacture more blades that was easier on their equipment regardless of the claim of it being for the end users ability to sharpen.
FOH

Hi!!!
Great video and I love learning from content like this.
Over hyped.
Just like your mom
@@ericasedc Hahaha ouch!
CR is overpriced and overrated and it sickens me that people fall for their price point as a mark of quality. It absolutely is not.
Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate you!
i’d never ever put a 15 degree edge on a CRK. My sebenza is a work knife. i want some edge stability and durability . 15 will chip so fast
No it won’t, and it doesn’t.
