It definitely hinges on the genre. Anime’s are a visual medium and can be more expressive with action while web novels allow more deep dives into emotion. Mangas try to walk the line between the two, trying to balance out have a visual format while also being capable of having a decent amount of dialogue. On top of that it depends most on the writer/artist. Some stories have average novels while having phenomenal mangas. Lord of Mysteries will always be better as a novel but a novel won’t be able to capture the essence of Attack on Titan as well as a manga. One of my fav examples of how media format changes the tone of the story is Classroom of the Elite. Despite the main plot being exactly the same the Anime, Manga and LightNovel are 3 very different stories.
Even though writing has more depth than art, it doesnt mean a drawing without words cannot have depth, there are clearly a lot of artworks with just visual storytelling that have way more depth and complexity than people think, you can actually see the emotions of characters, environment, and atmosphere more clearly and with passionate mangakas like Kentaro Miura, Yusuke Murata, Hirohiko Araki and Takehiko Inoue are especially masters at it. It feels like you just described art as just "pretty pictures without any depth" and feels disrespectful towards artists.
im an artist myself and obviously biased towards visual storytelling but this video seems a little too biased towards novels ngl, still a good video though
It's your way of interpreting his words, because to me, he just explained that novels are more detailed than mangas, like, mangas more often than not, has little explanation to what is going on and the plot is vague especially if it's a novel adaptation. You can try reading novels to make a proper comparison. For me, I prefer novels due to fact I'm very picky with art styles which makes it hard to appreciate the story.
@@Active_Chaos i get what ur saying a lot of people have no idea how to tell stories visually and just make mangas cuz they like drawing not cuz they want to tell stories.
The quality of each individual work should not be considered when talking about each form of media as a whole, since that depends entirely on the authors and not the inherent characteristics of each medium, which is also why attepting to assert that one is better than the other is meaningless. What depth and expertise is presented in the stories of the best web novels is instead replaced by the painfuly detailed artwork of the best mangas. Discrediting said art as "pretty pictures" is genuinely disgusting and disrespectful to the time and effort artists like Miura put into their creation in the same way as it would be if someone were to deprecate web novels for "just being words".
Great video!! But my opinion is relatively simple: if it's good it's good, if it's not it's not. I don't care or pay much attention to whether a work is a manga or a web novel
TurtleMe is prolly gotta be one of highest earning webnovel authors having weekly releases of webcomic/novel on tapas and on his Paetron. And all thus meanwhile being completely independent except for the webcomic ofc.
I don’t really understand the wages like webnovel only pays 400 a month + like another 400 for the coins + like 1k for the patreon that’s still not that much money for a full time author is it? That’s not a liveable amount
@@sol9rs Tapas pays more to individual authors alongside the ad revenue than Webnovel, it gives like 70 percent to the author of I recall with more than 20k weekly paid readers for both novel and webcomic. And Patreon still gives him 2 dollars per person minimum with almost 3k monthly paying members (atleast 6k dollars per month at best 150k ). Webcomic revenue + Sales of eBooks and Audiobooks.. So yeah TM is probably the one of the highest earning Webnovel authors if not the highest.
Disagree, each medium has it's strength, weakness and limitations. Therefore I believe the quality of a story is more dependant on the execution how well they take advantage of the choosen medium. Some stories don't translate well in other mediums: Avatar the last Airbender's fight choreography wouldn't be as impressive, if not for animation. The comical nature of One Piece or the bizarreness of Jojo could not be expressed through words alone. To go point by point: Pure imagination > pictures: Preference, when it comes to epic crazy shit, yes. But for characters, nope. Imagining their appearance and how they act and behave feels often like generating AI pictures, lacking the "iconicness" of a good character design. Also, if I need pictures to imagine, the written text has already failed in that department. In-depth exploration: It's the strength of novels, especially complex things. However more complexity =/= better story. Emotions is there art shine as it immortalised these moments. In Bleach, there is a page (3 panels) from which, with the context of the story, I can tell the worries of a father, who had to raise his children on his own after the loss of his wife, and the relief he felt, knowing he has done well. In a recent One Piece chapter, within a span of 2 pages I shed tears for a character, who got properly introduced a few chapters ago, I have barely registered, let alone cared for till this point. Sometimes all I need are just a few highlights. Tactics: I would say up to 5 characters at the same time. Any more and the novel is usually losing momentum, because it needs to explain each part, to the detriment of a fast paced section. World Trigger handles this aspect very well, including short-term foreshadowing of (surprise) tactics. The author part: An interesting and valid point I never considered. Thank you. But I am comparing the storytelling potential of each medium, not their ease of practicality. So I am not sure, how much I want to include this. $$$: like every art, only the great ones earn well. A comparison to webtoon would be nice. Waiting vs daily release: There is a tendency of repeating story beats and stretched chapters to meet the word count, which is long-term far more jarring to me than enduring a monthly chapter. Better Powersystem: Matter of execution nearly irrelevant of medium. Haven't read those novels. Will try. Lastly, it's quite insulting to reduce a mangas art to mere pictures. Have you never heard of visual and environmental storytelling? Gigguk made a video about Naruto fights showcasing it's greatness. Technically the anime, but it gets the point across. Hope, it was helpful to someone.
Now thats what im talking about! It's like compairing (almost) 2 different thing. While i know that both of Novel and Manga still a form of art what makes it different is the presentation. Like, of course that web-novel in the form of Text, and manga/comic in the from of drawing. But dude, we read Manga/Comic not only for the story but also the ART of it, it's the part of the story telling it self 😭😭 And thats why i also do believe both of the medium has their Uniquenes in their own, just like we read the novel to see all manners of Text and Dialog that the creator has cook for us, in manga/comic we read it to see all kind of Plot and Art that the creator cook for us!
I would have never thought I would see a Webnovel eloge on youtube lol, I used to spend my days on that app, even its earlier version Qidian. I read a lot of good novels there with both male and female MCs.
Isn’t there the anime to manga to ln/webnovel pipeline? I’ve heard people talk about it before and it makes sm sense cuz you definitely get a higher understanding of a story from one to another.
Novels overall are better because the characters that you imagine are uniquely different from other people who read that book it really lets your imagination run wild
Depends entirely on the web novel in my opinion. I’ve read the WN version of some of my favorite comics, and lemme tell you that the novel was usually dry as stale bread.
The lower barrier to entry is both a blessing and a curse for webnovels. While you do have that 1% that make peak, the fact anyone can make webnovels means the medium has no quality guarantee unlike published books or manga which normally require at least some degree of talent to make it past publishers (not to say there isn’t a lot of trash in those mediums, there are)
Another great thing about webnovels is that you can create or find fanfictions of already existing or past franchises(Be it Manga, Anime, western movies, or series). There are fanfics on One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, or any other well-received manga/anime/TV series/movies and they are pretty decent depending on what angle you wanted the story to go into(Original main character dying, the what-if moment, then what would happen if a character from another franchise/anime was ever transported into their world) since there are niches to choose from. Fair warning, most of the fanfics are made from the author's "Vivid" imagination so they can reaaaaaaaallly stretch how the story would go, like becoming a Saiyan in Naruto or having the ability to literally have every possible advantage known in their respective universe or a harem seeking story cause why not. There are, however, some fanfics that make a great story if the authors have continued their work, they have their own issues and most series have to be dropped. Ironically, Chinese fanfic webnovels are numerous and have their own website, if you find a decently translated novel, you will find yourself a great novel to read. Decent being that the names, phrases, and references are translated correctly instead of being machine-generated.
Don't get me wrong but even though opm has great art it's not really that good in story. It cannot compete with good webnovels just relying on its art.

Personally i would say that it depends on the reader's preferences really, although i am biased since i am a manga reader but mostly on the side of horror/disturbing mangas because they focus more on the actual images then text.
@@DreamoftheFOOL I never really said that mangas can be better at doing horror then novels, what i said was that i'm biased but mostly on the side of horror because they focus more on the image(example: blood on the tracks) which adds to my point that it's mostly about preferences, i never really meant to say that mangas are better at doing horror, plus both are dependent on the author and yet again personal preferences still plays a large part kinda like me a christian that never really feared hell when reading inferno by dante but after seeing the different artworks of hell it made me horrified.
Okay, but I tried to read lord of the mysteries and it was kind of cringe. This take will probably get me burned at the stake. But maybe it wasn't beginner friendly enough or something? Idk, it was my first web novel.
understandable, the enjoyment of LOTM dependends heavily on how far u are. i know u heard it but u shouldnt judge LOTM on the first 200 chapters (tho i love them still), past that it just gets better and better also if u ever decide to get back into it, just remember there is Tarot Club every 20-ish chapters, so u have something to look forward to
Have you tried reading any of Brandon Sandersons works? In my opinion hes the greatest fantasy writer alive and the best magic system creator of all time. If you like to read normal books that is.
I went from anime/donghua -- manga -- manhwa -- manhua -- web novel/light novel/visual novel. And yes, wn/ln are better than any drawn media I've seen.
They are two different mediums and while you can compare works across them, I think its pretty unfair to say one is better than the other. There are horrible webnovels and horrible mangas and there are amazing webnovels and amazing mangas.
My imagination makes everything mixed up sometimes I remember some stuff thinking where did I saw those scenes only to find out that those are from my imagination either made up by myself or from reading a webnovel 😂😂
Frrr people can have amazing story ideas in their head but cant visualize it in an drawing One of the best example is one the author of one punch man and mob 100, his story tell is amazing but his drawing skill are.. . Ok to say the least
idk about other authors, But most Chinese authors (for example Cuttlefish) do need to change they're story because of the government I know it really offended Cuttlefish and he said his story was much different than what it is now but he kinda worked around it also you get authors like gu zhen ren (RI author) that got his web novel banned too... so its not only the mangakas that have pressure on them
NGL absolutely abysmal take lmao. Most mangas mid, most web novel are pure garbage. The best mangas are peak fiction, the best web novels at their best are top tier works but thats all.
2:49 better story telling and in depth story are not valid points you have 'establised'. They are completely different mediums. Those are subjective and completely based on the mangaka and authors. Many people cant visualize fight scenes too, meanwhile, no novel can come close to the shit muraka draws (Imagination might beat art, but imagination differs drastically from person to person, and more people lack the artistic imagination than i want to admit). Please dont make such comparision videos, let people enjoy what they like and dont be an elitist
Mainly because of the webnovel industry is very mature in China. China webnovel app is like Japanese manga magazines where there are a lot of polls and instant reader feedback and most importantly: money. If your novel is popular you can make tens of thousands of dollars per day. It really bring in the best talent to be full time writers.
This is pure bs. "webnovels have better story telling and in depth story", what are you even talking about. Manga's like chainsaw man have much better story telling, just look at its paneling. In that, characters dont talk what's on their, mind, their actions talk for them. Mangas and animated medium have a clear edge on visual depiction. As for your imagination point, many people dont want to put effort into imagining things of that scale, not many can imagine things like that. And the way you say manga's have pretty pictures is insulting to the artist who spend so much of their time trying to improve. You are clearly just an elitist reader, who thinks he is all that jus cuz you read, and others consume other forms. At the end of the day, both of us are reading or seeing these just for entertainment, and it doesnt matter which form of media you consume. (Also, i am on chapter 357 of lotm, upto the point where amon is introduced and almost invades area above the gray fog, and read 2000 chapters of shadow slave, while also read many mangas and manhwas, so i can speak for both)
you know what!! I completely agree with this hot take!! WEBNOVELS (good ones) are completely superior to the mangas(especially the new ones) From LOTM, ORV, RI,... the list goes on!!! are great works!! at least the offical art exists to save some imagination for a few readers hahahahaha

Personally i would say that it depends on the reader's preferences really, although i am biased since i am a manga reader but mostly on the side of horror/disturbing mangas because they focus more on the actual images then text.
it can be preference yes
I agree that it mostly depends on preference but disagree on the part that a manga can do horror better than novels becouse of images.
@@Halfdan_roblox well, you're right about that.
Okay, but I tried to read lord of the mysteries and it was kind of cringe.
This take will probably get me burned at the stake. But maybe it wasn't beginner friendly enough or something? Idk, it was my first web novel.
lotm is probably the 2nd hardest webnovel to just jump into
understandable, the enjoyment of LOTM dependends heavily on how far u are. i know u heard it but u shouldnt judge LOTM on the first 200 chapters (tho i love them still), past that it just gets better and better
also if u ever decide to get back into it, just remember there is Tarot Club every 20-ish chapters, so u have something to look forward to
LoTM has an insanely slow start so it makes sense
I pretty much only read manga whenever I'm bored, but this video actually made me want to dive into the world of webnovels 👍.
Have you tried reading any of Brandon Sandersons works? In my opinion hes the greatest fantasy writer alive and the best magic system creator of all time. If you like to read normal books that is.
of course he the goat I read his stuff in highschool
@@Mr.Mysteriess oh hell yeah, im reading words of radiance rn and its so good
actually, webnovel only gives authors about 28% of the revenue, since they deduct a bunch of fees.
Bro, can you do a video on X season 1 on webnovel
presentation >>>> words
I never had as much of a visceral reaction to the end of vol 1 until i saw meg greenys fan art of it
I went from anime/donghua -- manga -- manhwa -- manhua -- web novel/light novel/visual novel. And yes, wn/ln are better than any drawn media I've seen.
They are two different mediums and while you can compare works across them, I think its pretty unfair to say one is better than the other. There are horrible webnovels and horrible mangas and there are amazing webnovels and amazing mangas.
could you do a video on what pathways and level you think fictional characters would be
bro didn't hesitate from taking shots on webnovel app, W video manz 🗿
Can't wait for 2025 where it will be the year of webnovels!
Obviously are web novels better when they have A LOT MORE text and don‘t have to draw pictures everywhere
Unfair comparison tbh
The pictures are a set back I can’t lie
Really, but most people seem to care about the pictures and the story itself.
My imagination makes everything mixed up sometimes I remember some stuff thinking where did I saw those scenes only to find out that those are from my imagination either made up by myself or from reading a webnovel 😂😂
Frrr people can have amazing story ideas in their head but cant visualize it in an drawing
One of the best example is one the author of one punch man and mob 100, his story tell is amazing but his drawing skill are.. . Ok to say the least
idk about other authors, But most Chinese authors (for example Cuttlefish) do need to change they're story because of the government
I know it really offended Cuttlefish and he said his story was much different than what it is now but he kinda worked around it
also you get authors like gu zhen ren (RI author) that got his web novel banned too...
so its not only the mangakas that have pressure on them
china needs to cut out the gooberness so we can read peak
Great video, would love to have a collab with you one day. Keep going😁
Book vs. comic the video.
nice video, also royalroad clears
NGL absolutely abysmal take lmao. Most mangas mid, most web novel are pure garbage. The best mangas are peak fiction, the best web novels at their best are top tier works but thats all.
I agreee.
But authors POV alone clears all of manga except for maybe USOGUI

2:49 better story telling and in depth story are not valid points you have 'establised'. They are completely different mediums. Those are subjective and completely based on the mangaka and authors. Many people cant visualize fight scenes too, meanwhile, no novel can come close to the shit muraka draws (Imagination might beat art, but imagination differs drastically from person to person, and more people lack the artistic imagination than i want to admit). Please dont make such comparision videos, let people enjoy what they like and dont be an elitist
Ok hear me out. Both are good?
here is a L for you
take it back
@@Mr.Mysteriess nah jush kidding man, i love reading novels. but you should have started ur yt journey by explaining first few chapters of lotm
True, totally objective and not biased video right here
could have removed the web part lol
wtf
Bro your comparing two different mediums
Great Job.
thank you rejuan297
CN webnovels >> JP LN all day
very understanble
Mainly because of the webnovel industry is very mature in China. China webnovel app is like Japanese manga magazines where there are a lot of polls and instant reader feedback and most importantly: money. If your novel is popular you can make tens of thousands of dollars per day. It really bring in the best talent to be full time writers.
Also easy to read because of the chapter system of ~1,500-2000 words per chapter
i got aphantasia and i still prefer webnovels
you have fully evolved then

bad or good way
@@Mr.Mysteriess good but atm I'm still stuck at the manga part and I needed to get used to it with web novels :/
WEBNOVELS (good ones) are completely superior to the mangas(especially the new ones)
From LOTM, ORV, RI,... the list goes on!!! are great works!! at least the offical art exists to save some imagination for a few readers hahahahaha
