The fascinating thing about this is that the main bass line pattern is palindromic aka a mirror image of itself. The original version on the album had straighter drums, then came the main remix that a more swung drum track.
I spoke to a man about a dog in a club one night when i first started going out. I was too scared to actually do it that night but it was burning a hole in my pocket for the whole week until one night I decided to do it. I sat there listening to this song over and over again jamming in my room along with other acid house classics. It will always hold a special place in my heart. This wasn't that long ago either (well compared to the life time of the song), around 10 years ago now, I was 18. I imagine there are thousands of people who remember their first time and this song in particular and I share that with them.
just wanted to say your videos have all been really interesting. Sorry for the boring comment but just wanted to say I appreciate the effort you put into your videos
It was a merely few kilobytes sample storage away from being called Voodoo Rage. Derek and Clive - Bo Duddley, if you are looking for the unmistakable samples
omfg i love that you did this. clearly one of the best tracks in history, and as you say in the intro still sounds absolutely on the nail all these years later. How I wish I knew how to put this level of care into a track. Wow.
Such an amazing track, which remains my equal favourite acid house track alongside Ecstacy Club's "Jesus Loves The Acid" and Baby Ford's "Oochy Coochy". They even got played at the goth clubs I went to in London, as they didn't sound out of place alongside industrial and (old school) EBM.
Oh yes! Oochy Coochy - one of my all time favourites, too. Had almost forgotten what it was till tracking it down on YT a couple of years ago. Eon-The Spice Must Flow, another classic I think from around that time.
Great tracks :) personal faves of mine: Garden Of Eden & Dance With the Devil ;) I have to say Acid Man is weirdly still absolute fire as well. SO many great trax from those early days.
Nice breakdown of this tune, I always loved Voodoo Ray! And your walkthroughs 😄 But really interested to see how you tackle Aphex next! That is gonna be very interesting - can’t wait! Keep it up man
Thanks Guy, another classic track expertly dissected and emulated! This was one of those tracks which forever cemented my love of the lower end Roland kit like the 808 and 303, so much soul for such low budget instruments!
Love these videos! They hit me in the nostalgia feels. Amazing attention to detail while keeping the spirit of fun throughout, really entertaining and informative. Thank you!!

Love the vocal recording you made, had a little cheekiness about it, great homage to the original. I was ready to cringe but it made me sit up and go ooh, good job.
Nice one Gyu Beats!! This is the TV show of my dreams. I'm the chap on the toilet in Brassic Park right now - but looking forward to a time when i can join your patreon and help you buy that original 303. In the mean time, sending lots of love and gratitude
So with these deconstructions I normally think, yeah that pretty much sounds like the original, but here there's a world of difference. No shade intended, but it really highlights Gerald's alchemy, putting together these simple ingredients into something so unique, you can hear every element but there's a bit of magic in how they all slot together.
great work ! Voodoo Ray for me was the Ultimate Hacienda Track....and done by a local lad , so it just adds to its status. True classic , made us proud PS. You wearing startrek doctor colours , word !
I know it’s not a request channel, so I’m absolutely not requesting a breakdown of j.d.’s plastic dreams. And even if you’ve got totally nothing better to do, please do not bother yourself with joey beltram’s energy flash either. Happy new year my friend
If you loop a sample on the AKAI 950 You could set it to loop back on itself, forwards and backwards I think that’s how it was done for vocal sample 🤔 I always thought it said “danger “ 😂 Great reconstruction ❤
I love the story A Guy Called Gerald told in interview about this track saying "the sample was meant to be Voodoo Rain! But I ran out of sample space" so Voodoo Ray it remained.
Speaking of dance tracks, "How did he do that?" EON - The Spice Must Flow URL: th-cam.com/video/dcgft-iiZ_s/w-d-xo.html WIKI: Eon was known for acid techno song called "Spice" - released Nov 1990. Great video, as usual. It’s a shame Gerald was ripped off by the record label owner. I follow him on FB and he talks quite openly of the problems he’s faced because of this track.
After buying the roland aira gear this was the 1st tune i tried to replicate the 303 pattern is still my 1st saved pattern on the tb3 i was trying to put it all to giver again recently using then wee s1 that just recently came out
@@GyuBeats - Even if you don't do a video, I'd love to know what you think. BTW: the original or album mix are the ones to listen to, give it a listen all the way through at least once.
Yes the acoustics weren't very good in The Hacienda (as an odd aside I watched Peter Hook from New Order last night here in Australia) but this track always sounded great... To be fair it sounds great on anything. A true classic.
Hi these are superb vids. For you're consideration- have a look at 'In the Air Tonight' Phil Collins, no wait, don't laugh. Your videos are great! Try & do an Aphex Twin track... there's a challenge! Not selected ambient works 1 or 2, anything "I care because you do" onwards. If you can do something from Druqks or Syro you need a gold medal :D
Hi matey not being funny but there was people way before guy called gerald from the uk, like paul hardcastle with universal funk album, also hard rock soul movement, and Greg wilson with the uk electro serious. Loads more as well.
Yeah fair point, but Greg Wilson never had a tune as big as Voodoo Ray (to my knowledge) and Paul Hardcastle, while amazing, wasn't quite so much a part of the dance music scene was he?
Had the money 7:18? 😂Bruh, you have well over a $1k worth of music equipment in that studio of yours! I’m quite certain you can afford an original TB-303! You’re better off just buying the $400 TB-03. It works and sound almost identical to the original, no doubt! The average listener won’t know the difference in the sound comparison.
Slightly disappointed by the discovery of "danger" being "later". 😂 Things that keeps this tune so fresh: it sounds somewhat held back and mysterious, it doesn't have a crazy buildup and climax.
I thought i’d seen Gerald demo using a delay with a really short delay time and feedback to add those metallic overtones to the bass and that other 101 part….
@@GyuBeats it was years ago, i’ll see if I can find it. I think the high resonance is part of it too, but if you listen to the track there is a metallic quality to the bass part.

It's the greatest British Acid House track, hands down
The 'whoosh' behind the snare is an 808 clap run through a really tight gated reverb.
