The Biggest Thing Missed in Inside Out 2

  • I wanted to love this movie SO bad, and there were a lot of really strong choices that Disney / Pixar made -- however, there was one glaring detail I felt needs some critique and discussion. For your viewing pleasure: an examination of how Inside Out two hit itself in the foot at the VERY last second, plus a discussion of Disney's history of queer baiting. Tis a gay ol time.

I completely agree with this take and left the theater feeling cheated when the secret was revealed. Great analysis 👍

Thank you! I'm glad I'm not the ONLY one... cause let me tell ya there are some folks who do NOT like this video 🙃 Not that that type of reaction was totally unexpected; but for a second I thought I was screaming into a void and receiving only a thumbs-down in reply 🫠

Disney really put all that setup into the dark secret being a coming out event and… you’re right. Totally dropped it. Maybe the secret is lying though, and we’ll have a 3rd movie about it? 😅 one can hope lol

hey, this is a good video, but the whole “not including lead gay characters because they’re pandering to China” is a bit of an outdated notion. There might be some degree of truth to it, but it is also largely a narrative disney has allowed to continue because it allows them to escape blame for lack of queer representation. Of course Disney wants to appeal towards every market, like you said, including China’s, but it’s a bit uninformed to imply the main reason disney refuses to push for real queer representation is because of Chinese audience when, if we’re being honest, they have just as much interest to be as neutral as possible pertaining to queer representation based solely on American audiences. Disney has built a following with conservative families across america due to their family friendly branding and they are probably afraid of the backlash they’ll get from american audiences as well. all this to say, disney has a multitude of reasons to not want to produce a movie with a queer lead, and it’s unfair and misinformed to use china as a scapegoat for disney’s lack of representation.

Hi! Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. I’m sorry if I implied that was the ONLY reason - and if response to this video is any indication, you’re likely right there’s still some homophobia running amok stateside that would threaten any representation (which I knew but it was even more negative than I thought.) for the record, I don’t mean to make generalizations about the populace as a whole in a monolith, i shouldve specified that there are political systems in place that literally gate-keep movies from being played in Chinese theaters. Like foreign media policy makers that have rules about what gets shown, and that’s why anything even minimally controversial is tricky. Plus, we are talking SO much money; billionsss of dollars - the market is just SO big over there. (And we all know money is the mouse’s native language 🙃) So I do think it’s justified as a rather influential choice to make things appealing abroad; but I didn’t mean to insinuate that was the ONLY reason. Disney was only in support of opposing the Dont Say Gay bill at the behest of its employees, but definitely dragged its feet into that position. I didn’t mean to scape goat china as the sole reason; rather just point out an observation that it was likely a factor ❤️

So interesting....I managed not to notice any of the gay/queet coding. (especially the significance of the deep dark secret)
this was a really cool video to watch after seeing the movie. (also the idea of adding other emotions into an R rated version was a fascinating thing I hadn't even considered)

Yeah, I couldn’t tell if that was the original plan & they just chickened out, or if NO ONE on the project - not a single name in that massive list of credits - ever pointed it out. (Which? seems unlikely 😅)

I agree with you to an extent. I don’t necessarily think it had to be gayer, but some people would have enjoyed it. But some things she mentioned, like wanting to hang out with a cool older kid, those aren’t just queer kid only experiences. Those are pretty much universal experiences, so I don’t think it not being gay made the movie worse or better in any way
