Very interesting I made my veg filter out of 4x3 inch wood posts cut 4ftx2ft this is 2ft6” deep and 4” above the back of the pond on top of flags.
Its stepped inside to allow different plants to be placed in it.
It has a cheap liner cost £15.
A 1.5” pipe comes from the pond down to the bottom 6” of 20mm pea gravel covers the bottom water rising through the gravel back to the top a 2” pipe returns the water to the pond.
So basically, gravity keeps the water moving.
    I have water lettuce/ blue Iris/water chestnut/baby tears/water cress all in it.
One thing I do is cover the return pipe with a bit of mosquito mesh a bit of wire holding it on which I take off and clean when needed.
Its also simple to cover up in the winter.
Baby tears will spread and spread never known anything to grow so quick.

good compost that was taken out. That will be really good for the garden. Cracking job on shaping/digging out the hole. Give some of the soil to your neighbours..bet they would love it. Covers still on ?? when will you take them off..mine been off now for a week or so.

If you have discovered small worms in your tap water.
Or your fish have been catching things.
The worms that have been reported to have been found in tap water are midge larvae, flatworms, roundworms (otherwise known as nematodes), and rotifers.
The typical size of parasitic worms or helmiths, such as flukes, tapeworms, hookworms, ascris, pinworms, trichina worms, and filaria worms is 30-50 microns in diameter. Nematodes have long, cylindrical bodies which have no internal segments. Nematodes in fresh water and in the soil are microscopic. Some can be up to 1 inch long and others are microscopic.
They can enter the water supply via reservoirs, wells, streams, rivers or lakes.
The usual response to this problem has been one of increased reactive maintenance routines by the water company. This typically involves considerable cleaning and disinfection of the supply zone and increased chlorination of the water for a period of time after the event. This often gives rise to frequent complaints about the resulting taste and odour. It should also be noted that chlorine and bleach can be totally ineffective against blood worms in particular.
Worms in tap water have also been known to impart objectionable tastes and odours to water.
Although totally undesirable, it is generally accepted that these are completely harmless and they have been studied for whether they are carriers of the type of disease-bearing bacteria found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals.

I am envous of where you are at, everything looking so nice and well kept. A mature garden and pond. I love a veg filter great way to balance the eco system. Just be careful you don't have flow dead spots to harbour bacteria. I've found before I've had dead matter collect and rot and cause issues. 🎉🎉

Sorry not seen this video sooner, in a nutshell I have been running my 10k gallon 8x5meter koi pond here in Italy filtered exclysively through two "veggie filters", 5x2 meters each, here is a link to how the pond looked end of last summer th-cam.com/video/8PSzMqhX6ko/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Bb582d6A0Wm23vhO
Uploading now a video how it is looking today, if you look on my channel there is a slideshow on jow I built it. Each veggie filter has underlay and EDPM liner with a bottom drain on which there are plastic pallets covered by 3 layers of mesh and a series of 2" slitted pipes from the pumps on top of which is about a foot deep pea gravel with all the plants. This way the water goes first to the roots and then filters up through tge gravel to then overflow back in the pond. The pallets beneath everything allow for any sludge to be drained away from the bottom. It might be "overengineered", kind of cobbled together various different ways of making a veggie filter but it seems to work ok. I feed in the summer at least 600g a day of high protein growth and check the values of ammonia and nitrites with Hanna checkers and levels always very low, nitrates barely readable on liquid tests. Hope it helps, ciao from Italy

Hi Paul, I've only just seen this comment it's a very interesting design on the veg filter, and your koi look great with lovely clear water, but I'm really jealous of those views. Wow 👌 Stay safe Andy 👍
