@@kasiag2256 No. It's been chemically compromised to look straight. Like how white women sometimes use perms to chemically compromise their hair to look curly. You're right, she has a gorgeous face, but her hair isn't healthy, especially not after that flat ironing. You could tell that the guy really tried, and did his best. But the end result looks like how every black girl did their hair in middle school. She'll have to deep condition the hell out of her hair, and baby it for a few months, to have it looking good again.

For anyone that has anything negative to say, it's probably due to ignorance. American's think frying the crap out of their hair means it gets the job done. But let me share what I saw. First, her wash was done with gloves on. I applaud this. Not only for sanitation reasons but so the nails don't damage the hair. Next, other countries usually make all natural products and they don't cook it into your hair like here in America. I wish she would've said more. Explaining what her scalp during the wash, after the wash, and during the treatment. You don't need extreme heat for the treatment process. Next, she spent most of her time drying naturally. Which is how it's suppose to be done. But the most important part of all. Drum roll please...... Some of you was too focused on how many passes he did with the flat iron you missed the fact that there was no smoke from frying her hair. Which means the flat iron wasn't as hot as ya'll think it was. This was probably one of the best videos on hair. Americans should be more comfortable with their natural uniqueness and stop frying the crap out of their hair. I didn't see one cloud of smoke the whole video. And the fact that he spent 4 hrs on just her and she never referenced paying by the hr was outstanding. A for effort. A for service. A+ for not damaging beautiful black hair.

Not necessarily. Hair types between Asian and people of color (black people) are on totally opposite ends of the spectrum. However, in most cases, when it comes to certain techniques and or services i.e, cutting, shampooing, coloring etc, the rules are pretty much the same for all hair types. But, to achieve simular results when straightening and styling the different types of hair, the techniques may and often do differ. Curlier hair most often requires somewhat more of an effort to straighten. It's almost like comparing oranges to apples. As a multicultural professional stylist in the industry for over 30 years, I've learned that the level of expertise regarding working with multiple hair types all boils down to the individual stylist. As with the medical field, if you're a doctor you're a doctor! Just because someone chooses to be a Neurologist and not an OBGYN does not negate the fact that he or she is still a doctor and loves the medical field any less. it's the same regarding the profession of hair. Just because a Hair Stylist doesn't (and there are some that do) specialize in all types of hair does not mean that they're any less of a professional Cosmetologist or has less of an appreciation for their craft than someone who does. it's about a person's passion and/or preference.

@@maagyk how They are dressed means nothing. No one is doubting he was very professional. But let's just be honest, it wasn't the best. He should have placed her under a dryer. Also some people put the flat irons on low temps to "protect" the hair... but how much protection are they getting if you have to make 10 passes to get the same effect. She needs some heat to her hair, dryer and then a hotter temp for the flat iron.

WithBrittany I see what you mean (so I gave a thumbs up). But I've never seen anyone do this before. Maybe he was over thinking it. But, with her hair being permanently relaxed (straighten). All that was needed was wash/conditioner, flat or round brush to blow dry straight and once over with a flat iron to bump or curl. Same thing you would do and I've seen many of times when handling white, black and asian hair that is straight.
My hair is not chemically straighten. So, I have to get my hair blow dried as straight as possible and then once over with a flat iron to smooth it out a little more, when straightening.
I thought it was common knowledge that you don't try to straighten wet hair. But. Again maybe he was nervous and over thought it due to her being black.
Korea has salons that are now catering to afro texture hair. But, I don't think that's something she probably was able to find in China.

But through my instructions, they did a great job! 5 years later and back in the states, I still remain friends with them. They became known as the hair salon that did black hair because of me and my son. And for the record, ALL Chinese salon stylists dress like that and I'd say 80-90% are men. When I asked once, I was told it is because the men know how they want their women to look.

Back in the day when I was still straightening my hair, a young Black lady in Florida used a similar technique on me. She washed and conditioned my hair, combed it out gently, gave a slight trim, put in a leave in conditioner, combed my hair down around my face, covered my hair and sat me under a low temp dryer. Then she flat ironed my hair. It was the best my hair ever looked straight. It had shine, bounce, fullness AND it was a very gentle process. No one has done me that lovely since and that was back in 2000-2001. I've stopped straightening since then because I COULD NOT find another salon that used her technique and I went from the 'hood to Newbury Street here in Boston from Jamaicans to Dominicans, nobody could achieve the same. I figured, if you can't straighten me out without trying to bald or scald me, I was just going to stay kinked.
Anyway, I think he really tried to be gentle and minimize damage and breakage. Thanks for uploading.

I’m saying that if you are a good hairdresser, you should go out of your way to at least watch tutorials about other hair types that exist. You can’t only know how to do straight hair and call yourself a hair stylist. Would a dressmaker be excused if he only knew how to make clothes for short people because Asians are short? I don’t expect him to be an expert on a black woman’s hair, but come on! He didn’t even know how to blow dry her hair!

It looks like the stylist wasn't trying to use excessive manipulation or stretching during the drying process; hence why he may have used the defuser. He may have concluded that your hair was very fragile and took major precautions to not cause breakage. He may also have been using a flat iron that is equipped for use on wet or dry hair. Those tools do exist. Your hair looked to be somewhat damp. He did do a lot of passes on your hair, but the flat iron appeared to be on a very low setting most likely around 300°F-325°F.
At the end, your hair was actually very moveable and had shine to it. In my opinion, your hair didn't look fried he just didn't use excessive heat or tension on your hair to give it that silken texture. That being said, he needs a heavier hand during the flat ironing process.

He did a really good job. It is not necessary to blow dry her hair, especially as her hair is already relaxed - though it sounds like she prefers it. He defused and let it air dry. He started flat ironing before it was completely dry though -- which is probably why he did it on such low heat; to keep from frying her hair. Also why it took so long. He used the flat ironing to dry and straighten. I can only assume he was trying to use as little amount of heat as possible... probably not knowing how our hair can hold water. The finish product was good though for a first time. Her hair had a shine, had body and bounce and didn't appear heavy. You can tell her hair is damaged though from that bit of frizz going on in the end. Idk if it was from the hairstylist or she's been relaxing her hair too much without giving it a breather and treatment. My hair is natural, thick and long. And a pain in the ass to dry because it holds water. My hairdresser does not blow dry me, because I don't like a lot of heat on my hair. She sticks me under a cool hairdryer for about 20-30 mins. I think this stylist should definitely get an A for effort and she looked happy with the finished product, if not completely satisfied. I'm pretty sure she was wanting a much smoother looking finish.

I just want to say that all the things I see people complaining about/noting to be strange methods or techniques, to techniques that are only used on bone straight hair (cutting while wet, flat ironing while wet, etc.) are things I’ve seen to be pretty common in Asian hair salons in both the US and China alike. There are even a few videos on TH-cam showing the techniques he using being used in other salons that are also in Asia. I’ve only seen my Chinese friends use a hair dryer when they were trying to dry their hair before going out. Most of the time I’ve just seen them air dry. He used the methods he’s accustomed to using and probably was taught to use in school. He’s in China. Most of the population there is Chinese with BONE STRAIGHT HAIR or pretty darn close to it. Not nearly enough people of African descent there for all hair dressing schools to make teaching their students how to style ethnic/curly hair a priority, if any of them do in China at all. I think he did a fine job with what he knows to work. He was very gentle and took his time. He might not have wanted to do too much experimenting trying to style her hair so as not to damage it or do something that would make her unsatisfied with the service, which I say would deserve more applause for him (if that is the case). I just wanted to clear this up, since there’s quite clearly a misunderstanding in the comment section. Good job to the stylist! You are very beautiful, by the way!

That's one way of looking at it. However, if you know you can't do "ethnic hair", why not just state that to the client. There's absolutely nothing wrong with just being honest. I understand that Chinese have bone straight hair, however China does have tourists, and some may decide to come in for a service. If a salon is open to the public, then they must consider that sometimes they will encounter people outside of their own ethnic background, and should be able to service those persons PROPERLY also. As someone else noted, Black folks do it all the time.
I see you speak of your Asian background, (ancestors, friends and family) so maybe your comment is a bit biased, and not so much "open minded" as the other commenter pointed out, because of that. Whenever a person goes into ANY business and pays money, they expect to get what they paid for, which is the best possible service. We can all agree that what he did on her hair was subpar for her hair type. Chinese people are VERY smart and tend to pick up things very easily. He (or any other person) could learn how to style "Black hair" right here on TH-cam.
I'm not trying to be rude, so please don't be put off by my comment. I'm just trying to get you to see it from the client's point of view. My mother went to a salon when she went on a trip to Greece (which is also only used to servicing people with European/Caucasian hair), and they styled her hair perfectly! It's up to the stylist to learn other things outside of the "norm" or their comfort zone. It can actually increase their revenue because of it. Point is, if you're not capable of giving one client the same perfect results as you do your normal clients, just say you cannot do it and explain why. It's that simple. There's no shame in being honest.

It didn't seem too bad to me. I think too many people are bothered because she has relaxed hair but it's her choice and her preference. You can have healthy, relaxed hair. It grows better for some people that way. Natural hair doesn't work for all people and isn't always an easy process. Her hair might not be the healthiest but whatever the case may be, she'll figure out what's best for her. I would like to see him work on natural hair to see his approach and how he handles it. But considering the fact he's unfamiliar with dealing with a hair type that can be difficult, especially when relaxed, he did decently. It looked a little more restored at the end. Maybe that's just me. Too many people drag others for things like wanting to relax their hair. It needs to stop. What you do and what works for you might not apply for others.

Great comment. When I was relaxed, my hair was very long, healthy, extremely bouncy and shiny. I have been natural for 8 years and it's extremely rough for me because my hair is tightly coiled aka 4z kinky. It eats products up like cookie monster and suck up water like a marathin runner....I may go back to relaxers this summer, it's not the end of the world as people seem to act.

I was just thinking that. I went to a black salon that was supposed to be upscale. I had texturized hair and they put a perm over it. The woman snatched the comb through my hair, like Celie from The Color Purple, before she put the perm in. They ran out of hot water while they were rinsing the perm out, which burned to high heaven of course. The place closed down after I went there. I finally found a hairdresser that cared about my hair and with her care the bald spots filled in. My hair is still very thin in places. After I left that place, I went natural. I want to make a couple of comments here. First off I am a retired hairdresser having done it for 38 years, and was a master instructor for 10;of those years. Oh and I am White. I get so tired of people acting like black hair is so difficult to do and get sick of black people acting like only black hairdressers can do their hair. This is just not true! I had regular customers that I performed straighteners combouts, blow outs, colors, cuts, etc. On. It is a different texture, yes but if you are a good hairdresser you know what you are doing and you can do a fantastic job, no matter who they are. I always did a great job and that's why they kept coming back. I agree that here in America, they do use strong chemicals and all but get a professional to do it, stop burning the crap out of your hair. And to top it off don't go to a hairdresser after you burned the crap out of your hair and lie to the hairdresser and tell them you had it done professionally and even lie about what product you used and how you damaged it and then blame the new hairdresser . I can tell if someone did their own hair . I usually recommend some conditioning treatments in advance, so I refuse to do it. But some hairdressers are not as experienced at just looking and telling, so they take you for your word and end up destroying your hair worse because you did not tell them the truth to begin with. And lastly, go back and listen to the tape. The lady said that they had their hair done in China. The people in China do wonderful at doing hair. He was not used to working on black hair and might not have been experienced but he did a great job. Hair is hair. You just have to know the proper tools and chemicals to use. This man did a fantastic job. I praise him in his job.

Linda Reiber I think he did a good job, her hair just wasn't curled. But her hair was straight without being fried, had body and up close in the sun showed a healthy shine. I'm black and to be honest, I've never been happy with my hair from the black salons that I've been to. My hair would be fried and frizzy. It looked more damaged leaving than when I walked it. I felt like they never did my hair right. I don't have coarse, thick hard to manage hair. So, I stopped going to salons. Until my sister had me go to Hispanic salons, which I was always happy with. My hair had body, looked healthy, and was silky. Asians can do hair, the guy preserved her hair and handled it with care. She must didn't tell him exactly how she wanted it styled. Other than that, I saw no issue with how he treated it.

wow nice and professional attire. He had a good attitude, considering he wasn't sure how to handle your hair. overall, he did a good job. I would have said to him in a nice soft voice that my hair needs to be all the way dry before applying heat. I'm sure he would have not been offended.

Umm the texture is still very diff to Asian/Caucasian hair ... Relaxed hair is kinky straight there's always still some texture

    • @tcg1972
      @tcg1972 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

REN CHAN FF Not true. Kinky hair can never be the same texture as Caucasian or Asian hair, even when straightened well. If you could feel the hair, you would know that immediately and you should also see that it's not the same.

Vonai Barchue actually the diff is substantial. Kinky straight hair is a completely different texture but I get what you mean. People expected kinky curly/curly hair but we got relaxed hair which could be seen as more straightforward to handle

This is why I can’t wait to move to Hong Kong- to do the textured clients hair properly! And his bag was from Toni&Guy, my school. There was not need to diffuse as your hair is relaxed. He could have easily blown your hair out with a round brush interchangeably with a boar bristle brush - then silk press if actually needed.

I have several friends from China & Hong Kong here in the states that to to school & work. I’m not sure why you feel the need to be hateful or negative online when in person you wouldn’t have the gall to say this to my face. Please refrain from responding and have a Merry Christmas! 🙏🏽

Roman...much love. I have been to Hong Kong and Guangzhou in china. You are right..the stylists will continue to see more varied clients, not just an increase in black travelers because the world is getting smaller. stylist there can offer a competitive edge to clients with various hair textures that is a great opportunity to grow business. How many hotels would refer their non asian clients to these salons? Or maybe tap that stylist for their own spas???

I had my hair done by an Asian salon here in Brooklyn & omggggg it was the best experience ever!! It came out the same way the Dominican salon can make it come out in about an hour. It took her 4 hours. She did not pull or tug my head at all she was light as a feather. My hair was super tangled and not 1 strand NOT 1 strand was on the comb or brush. She was just so delicate and she didn’t care who walked in the door her main focus was me.
Maybe this might sound odd that I’m raving about something like focusing on me. Living in an inner city it’s touch and go no one is really trying to treat your hair just do it. & the more time it takes to do your head the less interested they are.
Since going to her I’m completely natural and if someone pulls on my hair to detangle it I already know it’s a NO NO because I’ve seen it done.
