      And it was on one specific antioxidant when there’s plenty in berries & acid/ vitamin c has shown to drastically reduce it so if you drink the smoothie right after making it or blend with orange juice this is irrelevant

  • @karenacostakam

    I hate it when people with authority talks about science irresponsibly. When you test for an specific thing, you can only make conclusions about that thing, in no case you can say the opposite effect happens in the rest of the things you didn't test. This study ONLY proved the interaction with a particular antioxidant in cocoa, no other fruit, no other veggie, no other anything, not even other nutrients present in cocoa. It was specifically designed to test that and it only controls for that. As someone that does this type of statistical modelling for a living, I tell you that unless you are specifically interested in getting this element from cocoa, you can just keep putting bananas in your smoothie.

    • @johnsmith-pm1qe
      @johnsmith-pm1qe 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What kind of conclusion is this? it's reasonable to infer that this interaction would extend to other things. Whether you want to honor that inference is up to you. But ironically, you concluded your comment with an authoritative statement of nutritional advice that i presume you aren't fit to make? If we only responded to what was exactly in front of us, we would literally be monkeys. Intelligence is the ability to make clever inferences, those who couldn't died. It's annoying when people think their credentials make them these ultimate authorities.

    • @karenacostakam
      @karenacostakam 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johnsmith-pm1qe Sorry to burst your bubble, but no, it is not reasonable. Inferring that one interaction validates others that have not been tested is not how science works.

      @johnsmith-pm1qe 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@karenacostakam uhh, that's why it's an inference, not a fact. You're talking about facts. Say you were someone who required flavanols to live, and blueberries were your only source of flavanols. Would you then mix them with bananas or eat them separately?

    My QUESTIONS:
    >what about unripe bananas?
    >what about frozen bananas?
    >what's the time interval after eating a banana before eating other polyphenol rich foods?
    >are cooked sweet potatoes a good alternative to bananas?

    I have never used bananas in my smoothies. I use, dates, nuts, seeds, frozen peas, cooked dried beans, cacao powder blueberries and greens. The dates (3) and blueberries make it very sweet and help the greens go down.
    However, I do us banans in my chocolate popsicls so I might try cooking them next time.
    I'm open to learning about changes I need to make to my diet. I even steam my spinach and chards before adding them to my smoothies now to reduce the oxalate levels - anothe recommendation from Dr G.

    Honestly, I think our bodies take care of it. When I get a cut, I don’t have to worry about it healing. Or I don’t have to tell my liver to detox and get impurities out of my body. So I’m not going to worry about eating a banana! My focus is on getting physical activity daily, strength training 2-3 x a week, being social, seeking to learn new things, don’t smoke, abuse drugs or alcohol, be kind and eat veggies, fruit, grains, beans, nuts and seeds in all kinds of variety and colors. Moderation in processed foods too.

  • @mjs28s
    @mjs28s 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    That study was so limited in the smoothies that they tested.
    Additionally, they looked at one food interfering with the nutrient absorption from another. But foods have hundreds of compounds in them, and other benefits. What are all the other compounds in bananas that might make other important nutrients be absorbed better?
    Also, who is eating bananas at every meal?
    what are all the beneficial compounds, vitamins, minerals that come along with bananas that make the smoothie healthier despite tamping down the ability for some isolated compound being properly used by your body? What ratio of banana to other foods are in your smoothie?
    Lastly, the looked at COCOA - one food vs. bananas. Who lets their smoothies sit for an hour before drinking them? You also have all the other foods that might be in your smoothies that serve to block the enzyme in the smoothie. Lots of vitamin C and other things that slow or stop the browning process. Anyone ever cut apples and drop them into a bowl of water with a little lemon juice in it? Anyone make guac? Lime juice stops the browning. In short, with a variety of fruits and veg in your smoothies will most certainly make this a non-issue. My smoothies have four different berries, some tropical fruit, peaches, kale, spinach, beet, carrot, sweet potato, mango. I am not worried about the stupid banana enzyme that blunts a compound in Cocoa from doing your body good.
    Studies like this one is how some people get lead into orthorexia as they end up spending their entire lives working to constantly perfect their eating and food combining.
    If you ate only whole food smoothies for the rest of your life with lots of fruits, nuts, seeds, grains (oats), a bit of beans, greens and a few other veggies AND bananas you would be vastly healthier that 99% of the population.

    Should I avoid adding bananas to a green smoothie which could have spinach, kale or broccoli?

    I think it's okay to put bananas in your oatmeal, as long as you do things in the right order. First I put the bananas and the water in a blender and make what I call "monkey milk." Then I cook the oats in this liquid in a bowl in the microwave for 10 minutes. That should kill the polyphenol oxidase. It's only after that, when I add the berries, raisins, spices, flax and cocoa.

    What happened to him? Very difficult speech. Painful hum uhm uhm to hear. I didn’t understand anything today. A big mix salad of words. I could not follow his train of thought. Very very disappointing video! In the end I still don’t know if banana in smoothie are good or not

    Doesn't blending fruit and vegetable obliterate the fibre that your gut bacteria need? And aren't the sugars absorbed much faster compared to eating whole fruits and vegetables? Just trying to find out how healthy smoothies really are, also because you typically also use more fruit and vegetables that you would if you were eating them whole 🍌🍏🥕🤔

    That is sick, that people are using tax money to research this. Banana smoothie is just a drink to enjoy occasionally, I dont even understand the point of this video.. I drink it almost every week or every other week and I am just not going to get my head stuffed with irrelevant BS

      Enjoy the significantly higher CVD, diabetes, cancer, stroke, Alzheimers, and all-cause mortality rates that come with the animal foods and UPFs. Compare the Seventh-Day Adventists in California, who live healthy, disease-free, physically active lives into their 80s and 90s, with Texans, many of whom die of obesity, cancer, heart disease, etc. Now think why that is. What do the Seventh-Day Adventists eat?

    • @action1976
      @action1976 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @trapezius77 What are plant based foods like beyond meat? They are UPF's. Think you will have a healthy life from eating that garbage? Think again. There is no sugar in unprocessed meat, so that cuts out the chance of getting diabetes, cancer, and alzhiemers.
