Twenty-five percent of the residents of Rio de Janeiro live in informal communities called favelas. Not fully slums but not fully integrated into the city either, these favelas are home to both horrific gang violence and some of the most creative and resourceful people in Rio.

I was born and raised in rio, I’m Brazilian and I think it’s good to spread awareness. These happen due to the local state failing, not the people. Brazil’s federal government is corrupt, trying not to solve the problem push it away. Trying to remove the people in favelas isn’t going to work. The police are brutal and harsh and aren’t making it significantly better. Favelas aren’t bad they are resourceful. They need to remove the influence of the gangs, thats what causes the problems.
If they can’t to that then the government needs to understand that they are neglecting people and need to give them better *public housing*.

In fact, in some favelas there are "rules" imposed by the drug lords who runs it, some of these rules can be found in many favelas painted on the walls or in zippers used to sell drugs, the rules are like: "stealing in or near the favela is not allowed (and actually works, if you live in the favela or know the drug dealers who run the place, you can complain about your stoled item at where they sell drugs and they literally go after the stolen item and return you, and punish the thief beating him up or something like). The guy who was recording probably talked to a friend in Brazil who lives or is known within the favela, its totally safe. It varies from places to places. The slums os São Paulo are remarkably more violent because of the approach used by the gangs. And also, são paulo basically only have the PCC gang.
In Rio there is many gangs in differents parts of the city. So to better protect themselves against the police and other gangs, they used mostly a more peaceful approach.
      .
Red command for example. Since the people were basically forgotten by the government and police were known for it's brutality, they decided that instead of ruling through fear they would do it with respect and get allies instead of ennemies.
Many of these expressions of art were paid by the gang, they also paid for schools, sanitation and other things, all of that just to get the help from the community. And they did.

And people is not nice and receptive as the documentary shows. Public authority faces a lot of dificulties to reach the people living in favelas, because they think drug cartels are the real authority there.
There's the speculation on the housing market, and the lack of work for non qualified personel in the city as well.

Many villages and slum still function under gang leaders who intimidate and bribe the police and government into complacency. Only when things get out of control do those people and entities get disposed off of by the government. It's only been 5 years or so since the gang leader who controlled a majority of chennai which is the capital city of tamil got shot down. So to say that this doesn't happen in south India is ignorance. Many slums exist without any help or support or acknowledgement from the governing body. It may seem something trendy and interesting to do, but it is filled with crime, drug trafficking and many other dangers to tourists, to the people who live in Rio and even to the residents of those communities. Its a shame that its so dangerous there, because up there is where the best views of the city are.

This is a beautifully optimistic sentiment and a gorgeous place but I guarantee lots of the people living there would rather have safety and security than artistic expression given a choice. Even in the less violent neighborhoods the levels of poverty in Rio are staggering. I do like this video but it feels romanticized and a little disingenuous or at least out of touch. Sure, there are clearly incredibly resourceful, creative people but they're just people, bad and good people, nice people, cruel people, people people. And probably many people who would live in boring, ugly public housing in the US if it meant an opportunity to live somewhere with public services and good jobs. this video almost glamorizes the poverty. It really is a beautiful place, though, and a beautiful video.

the favelas have their own inner economy, and goes very well. It's not about glamorizing poverty - it's about showing that, despite the lack of interest of the asphalt people, and the government, they don't care, they won't just "disappear". And for the people outside favelas, the prejudice only shows the bad - "it creates violence, it makes us unsafe", as if they were a problem, and not a solution to a problem that no one cared to solve. I've been to those places. As a brazilian living in NYC for the past 20+ years, world traveler (by design - I'm a road manager for a band) I can see the importance to this video, showing that, "yes, they are people too". Also, the "I guarantee lots of people there..." is a little entitled: people like where they come from, mostly. And they are usually happy there.

MALAY SUBTITLES Part 2 of 2
    05:35
    06:50
Jam tangan kanan manusia menganggarkan pegawai polis AS membunuh satu orang dalam setiap 37,000 tangkapan.
    06:57
Di Rio jumlahnya 1 dari setiap 23 tangkapan.
    07:01
    08:42
secara kreatif walaupun diabaikan oleh pemerintah mereka.

The Favellas, are very similar to what my city, Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal is like. It is an ancient city built thousands of years ago, but modernization just infiltrated and dumped on top of older architectures, structures, without proper city planning, drainages, or building codes. The government never bothered to re-design the city, or mandate any code until the 2015 Earthquake. But still the city continues to increase in density of concrete buildings, unmanaged drains, trash, roads, its too frustrating.

As a Brazilian, and more importantly, a citizen of Rio, I can tell for sure that this was one of the few, both national and international docs or news about Brazilian favelas that looked more to the human side of the community.
As much needed it is to talk about the government (federal and districtual) negligence upon favelas, and then talk about violence, people and specialty Brazilian journalists, seem the to forget the fact that the vast majority of the people that live there are survivals of the normal urban problems and violence and even so produce culture and happiness. The fact is that it's not erudite culture enough to the people of the asphalt (irony). Thus, we keep seeing national and international news, articles and even official manuals made by olimpic delegations to keep distance from people of favelas that they might be criminals, very, very sad. Congratulations for the nice aprouch Vox, again.

I like that movie. As someone who's lived in Rio, my entire life, I think the movie does a fairly good job of portraying the city. Obliviously there are some places and things that weren't shown, but there isn't enough time in the movie to show everything and some things don't fit in a movie for kids. Also, the movie's creator is Brazillian, that's why it works so well. He's also the same creator of the Ice Age movies.

I'm Brazilian and proud to be one, and I have to say -It's very easy to manipulate information through media these days (as always actually), but Vox did a good job with these videos as they show a more realistic view than most of what life really is like in Rio. I live in Espirito Santo (state next to Rio) which has a very "different" reality* from Rio but I've been to Rio enough times to learn a lot about their reality. It's beautiful, sad and incredible all at the same time. I hope the Olympic games will change at least a few things (positively) in Rio and in Brazil. This is an amazing country, we just need more Brazilians to learn how to love their/our country and own up to the good and the bad.

This is a romantic view from a resourceful kid. But the violence and drug trafficking in the favelas are not a tiny slice in the favela experience. Rio has one of the highest homicide rates during robberies IN THE WORLD and to misinform like this is an act of complete irresponsibility towards people that may travel to the city in the coming weeks for the olympics.

    • @crystaldrano
      @crystaldrano 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

+Kenpachi Zaraki it will make a couple of viciously violent people richer than they already are and it will also provide them with a legitimacy that they shouldn't have. Along with that it won't change the fact that illegal endeavors will continue to find shelter in the favelas, because gangs were gangs before drugs became a thing. The only thing that changed is that gangs became more violent due to the use and abuse of drugs, and that won't change either with their legalization.

    • @davidelliott1594
      @davidelliott1594 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

+crystaldrano With respect, you speak as if there are not literally hundreds of news reports, blogs and documentaries that talk about how dangerous the city of Rio is and how dangerous the favelas are. That is the narrative of almost anything a person ever hears about favelas. But that is not all there is.
This report gave an alternative view of the honest, hardworking people who live in those communities, which I think is a refreshing balance to all the negativity that is portrayed about those communities. And I know from first hand experience, that not every favela has drug traffickers and gunshots at night.
There are some that are in fact very safe filled with a lot of love, laughter, community, music, cultural centers etc. And those elements should be emphasized as well. All the negativity only adds to the stigma in Brazilians society toward people from favelas.

They worked to bring together kids from the favelas and kids from from without, and I still cherish the time I spent there. I am glad that you showed both sides, since it's been a bit too easy to glamorize favelas since some have become more open to the public (e.g. Rochina).

The place is really savage towards foreigners, since you are not expecting a so craftly perfected assault "technique"... be really careful while treading there...
I even know someone that "vanished" into the city and no, I am not trying to scare people away. Try to study the places you want to visit, because even the taxi drivers do not cross some parts of the city after sunset (like taking the "red line"): You can end up isolated in a area you do not fully know...
Keep on the "asphalt", keep an eye on EVERYTHING you possess and do not trust in "strangers", so to speak...

I think a majority of the people there are nice, creative and resourceful. It's not a glamorization, it's just a more honest perspective of a place that is usually falsely represented.

    • @davidelliott1594
      @davidelliott1594 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+PatriotPigeon Exactly. This documentary was not "glamorizing" a violent, destructive, dangerous or non-progressive lifestyle. This documentary simply highlighted the positive aspects of these favela communities.
Also, I notice people in the comments continuously say "the favela" as if it is one place. Favelas are numerous neighborhoods located in numerous parts of Rio and each has its own identity. Those samba schools you see with the floats and dancing during Carnaval every year are from favela neighbohoods. It's the people and dancers of the favelas that really make Rio Carnaval what it is.
Not EVERY favela has drug traffickers and violence. Anyone who deeply knows Rio de Janeiro in its entirety, all zones, knows that some favela communities are safer than Copacabana.

3:52 "Morro da Providência", the first favela in Brazil. At the beginning it was called "Morro da Favela", hence the term "Favela" for all the others that came up.

As a Brazilian it makes me sad that there are so many neglected places in our country, Rio de Janeiro is a beautiful city. Sadly the Amazon rainforest is in a similar condition.

How is safety in Indian slums? I know it probably depends on the slum, but, how about the one you mentioned? Would you say it's more or less dangerous than these favelas are described?
I would love to visit india one day

Favelas is a prime example of, when life give you lemons … you make lemonade. Beautiful people of Brazil 🇧🇷 improvised and utilized. 👏🏾

Bro, I don't if you are form brazil, but here this is a shame, and it kinda bad thing to romantize the hard work of these poor people. These improvement just tells us that the society here is very injustice. I was bless to live in a good part of the city

@@marialeocadiaantunes818 I’m not from there I’m actually from the US . I can’t speak on their exact struggle but I’m sure it coincides with the one here in the states. I’ll never romanticize , poverty and injustice. I was just pointing out the fact that no matter how harsh and unjust ppl of African decent are treated. They always make away through sheer determination.
