3 years later, the stadium's abandoned, the park's gone to waste, and the shiny new housings are neglected. So all the money was literally thrown down the drain.
NotASuicidalRobot Resources and money that could have been used to support people and give them better opportunities. All wasted on a superficial, performative, ego-stroking event to boost one country’s image while it’s people languish in poverty.
1.5 million people live in Rio’s favelas. The total spent on the rio Olympics and was $13 billion (A significant Portion was tax payer Money). So if they would’ve taken the money spent on the Olympics and gave it to every favela resident, they each receive a check of $8666.
And I definitely think it would have been far more economical to repair the broken North Zone communities. In the long run, this would give a greater return to the economy too as these people would be valuable contributors to the workforce.
This is basically when your mom tells you to clean your room but instead of actually cleaning you just shove everything in the closet and call it clean
This is how the entire world works. How things seem is always more important than how things are. Suppose you work on the bottom rung of the ladder in a retail job for a big company. Your supervisor is one rung above the bottom, with his own boss 2 rungs above bottom. All 3 of you are unimportant in the greater scheme of things. Think of the corners that get cut and the turds that get polished when your boss is preparing for a visit from his own supervisor. Think of the resources that are taken from places that aren't currently under the microscope in order to get a pass mark. Maybe extra staff are put on for that one day and your store runs on the bare minimum for the rest of the week, treading water. Now remember there's at least 20 more rungs of the ladder to climb before you're at the very top of the company. If there's that great of a blatant conflict of interest on the very bottom of the ladder, what kind of stunts are being pulled further up?
And now, two years later the olympic park lies empty, deserted and in disrepair. The public parks that were built are fenced off, the athletes towers are empty and the stadiums are boarded up.

None of those are a big problem in Rio, the real problem is corruption. Millions of dollars for building roads, bridges, funding the police force end up in a pockets of corrupt politicians. If Brazil tackles corruption and focused more on public infrastructure the country would be a better place. Also mafias rule the streets of Rio, they will kick you out of your own house if you don't pay them. Public works projects and calling the military to take care of crime could do the country good.
Can't really blame them most of the time. Those slum people aren't just poor, most are lazy bums, Rio been building buildings for them to live so they could get rid of the favelas, most of the time it works, they already got rid from a lot of them, but some people just ruin everything. Since they have to pay for water, energy and this kind of stuff, they turned the building into another slum, they started splitting the rooms with wood and selling them and would build more favelas around it.
Andrea: same goes to Brazilian Portuguese language. They always think they're better than the original Portuguese people whilst they use horrifying and unnatural expressions.
I'm from the state of Rio de Janeiro - whose capital is the city of Rio - and our governor has recently asked the people to stop saying bad things about the state and the city on the internet. Instead he is advising us to post pictures of the beautiful parts of the city and say positive things to attract tourism. This is how bad our political class, our social justice, our public health and education are. So bad the government has to ask the people to stop spreading the news worldwide.
Soon enough the people will be tired of it like those in Venezuela and Syria they’ll fight back and reclaim stability it’s disgusting how much money can hurt somewhere
I went to Rio the September before the games and remember seeing all the construction. I was in a taxi and made small talk with the driver as we passed by volleyball stadiums that were being worked on. I said you must be so excited for the games and he explained how it’s a very bad thing for Rio. I didn’t realize until that conversation and everything he said ended up being accurate
@Kana Moquith I probably have watched that part, how can prisoners overcome the prison right? It means the system is failing, and yes, those decapitating and plucking heart out of their chest was horrible.
Still don't get how that works. Like, don't they have any athletes that need training or something? Or did they really intentionally made it a one-used thing?
Ghaitsa Ariadna i live in rio and can assure you that we are using almost all the Olympic venues we have build, now the are used to do major events like rock in Rio, big international conferences, and the city in a whole level has improved a lot since the olympics. The olympics gave us the opportunity to rebuild most of the city infrastructure that has improved majorly in the past years thanks to the olympics and most people that live in Rio are gona agree with me
I am Brazilian and I live in Rio de Janeiro. I live in the Rocinha slum. The only thing that me and my wife want is to be able to leave this country. Life here gets worse and worse every day. Even studying we do not get a job. Food is getting more and more expensive! People increasingly ignorant! People are attacking each other because of politicians.
Ginger....sure they do. Ones perception of poor is in the eyes of the beholder. One can be rich in materials and broke in spirit, while they look at someone who is broke in materials and thinking they are broke, the one broke in money while being rich in spirit is looking at the rich in materials but broke in spirit as they are broke to them. That's a pretty scary thing that you amongst all the people who liked your comment are many actually think this way....sounds like y'all are broke in spirit, knowledge, wisdom, life...and many other meaningful everlasting qualities. The blind masses following the blind....sad....all will parish with body due to lack of substance that lasts forever
I remember an episode of the Simpsons where they went to Brazil and they got accused and even threatened to sue by the local politicians for portraying Rio negatively by highlighting poverty crime and corruption. Since the Olympics it's amazing how much of this was found to be true.
And your probably stock piling supplies cause you don’t want the corona virus in your city or country. You have to regulate who’s in and out. I bet you don’t invite strangers into your house. 🤔
As a Brazilian I'm gonna tell you guys the truth, Rio is one of the most beautiful places in Brazil, however is one of the most dangerous too, Rio's police is the most violent *in the world* , a lot of hospitals were forgiven because of this stupid Olympics, don't even ask me about the world cup. I'm from São paulo, I love Brazil in all aspects, but the corrupt government of this country is letting Brazil into a hole. Sometime ago the brazilian people got FURIOUS, then the truckers from all the country stopped working, the country went into a caos, the markets were running out of supplies, animals from farms were dieing without food, all the prices were getting so high, president was trying to do a lot of deals, the gasoline prices increased from R$3,60 to R$4,80 (sometimes even R$5,00 a liter). As I said, I hate this country's government, and if it doesn't get better I'll get the f*ck out of this place.
@woficnwoap ohyeayea You're very wrong. São Paulo is extremely important, but Brazil is immense -- in many perspectives. "Labels are the opposite of understanding."
back in 2008, rio seemed great, poverty was slowing down, people getting jobs, economy on the rise. ect... it seemed like a good idea then, but they would def. not make the choice now. and its a bit too late to go back
Well Brazil had horrible corruption in the first place so think about it, the Rio Olympics is coming soon but the committee didn't notice this until now so what's the purpose of massive sports driven companies, to make money, they don't really have time to pick s new country they do the planning several years earlier the committee didn't notice this until a year ago so that's why.
Well, I'm Brazilian and I need to say, this problem isn't restrictred to Rio. We're currently in a political and economic crisis, because our governors are focusing on making more money to them, leaving the population apart. Brazil looks like a beautiful country with nice people living in it, but believe me, it's not only that. Oh, and violence is just growing up, I mean, A LOT.
Yes, I used to live in brazil a couple years ago. My dad was once pointed a gun to his head, just right outside our house. I know it's getting even worse, so I fear for my family.
It's not just in Rio. all around Brazil there are large areas of land populated by the poor which we call the "favelas" after moving to Canada I really started to miss my hometown in Brazil I remembered it being beautiful, but after a family visit I never want to live there again. it's sickening how far the Brazilian government ignores the poor. I guess that's what corruption does to a country
It's a recurrent problem all over the world. It has taken quite a grim turn in Latin America, but it also happens in the developed north. I have been doing some research on the matter and the majority of the authors from all areas (sociology, politics, art, architecture and even economy) point out that the phenomenon have existed since a long time a go, because it's the physical manifestation of inequalitywithin the built environment, and inequality is a characteristic of societies. Even the nordic countries have inequality, but not in the same degree as Latin America or even the USA. Going back to the topic at hand. The authors I have been studying, point out that inequality and illegal settlements got out of "control" since the 1980's, under the Reaganomics and Thatcherism policies that imposed the neoliberal agenda and therefore increasing inequality.
Thankfully for my country, the amount of athletes is enough to fill in the facilities (since they turned into a training area, but still usable for the Olympics or anything like that). Plus there's the current pandemic, so they've been using some of the rooms for Quarantine.
@@wizoneoncereveluv9668 The Philippines. One of the sports facilities would've still been in use currently if it weren't for the pandemic, but thankfully the "sports city" was made such that it could hold evacuees or patients if ever needed. Plus unlike most "local" sports facilities, the sports city that was made for the 2019 SEA Games is up to international standards, properly ventillated, air-conditioned, and maintained.

Especially when the olympics are bringing more problems to the local poor population. It's a shame to see people in power care more about the others than they do about their own.
@-Remilia - Coronavirus cases were at an all time high when the IOC decided to keep going with the Olympics lol. It's not safe just because it's Japan. They shouldn't have had the Olympics at all
After the games, this park will be like so many other Olympic Parks, empty and useless. Why can't we just have one location for the Summer and Winter Olympics, and keep it maintained. Most of the structures they build never get used again. It's just senseless to me.
Because its suppose to be an international game and having the host city change internationally goes a long way to drive home that point. Most of the Olympic games were hosted in the US or Europe and a lot of people in other country are already resentful of that fact. Another solution would be to make it so people won't make such a damn big deal about the games (at least financially) but there is just too much profit to be made by the rich and powerful. There's also no international regulatory entity that can do anything about it either and certainly not one where profit isn't one of the primary motive.
That's understandable, however it will still be unfair as that location only will benefit from the Olympics. The Olympics is bigger than just an international sporting event, it attracts tourists (while where there's tourists money is generated). So for instance if there's a permanent location in a place such as Paris, only the French benefit from it. That therefore causes conflicts, weakens unity in the world and etc. With all of that said perhaps a remote area with no governing body directing it is a better idea.
Brazil is not a Paradise... but we advertise it as one so we can continue to get Foreigner money. Brazil is slowling turning into a Giant Tourist Trap, while millions suffer.
If the government wasn't corrupt, sometimes acting to be better can actually make them better. If they act like a tourist spot, they get more tourists, they get more money and eventually it becomes a tourist spot.
Brasil has always been like that, ever since europeans discovered our land everything that left to us were corruption, lies and racism, i live in recreio, that is the neighborhood beside recreio and the bus line is great for me, everything from living and moving around in public transports is great for me and thats upsetting because I'm the minority, and its only great for me because everything i need is around the area, these thing shown in the video, we learn this at school and not only the ways of taking poor people out were like that, there is one they use that is making reach people live where poor people live makes the place more expensive so that they are forced to get out, brazilian parents mostly want their children to get out of the country bcs there still has such a dense corruption in the government that we cant even predict when its going to be at least cleaner
looking back at this, what really angers me (as a Greek, too) is how the Olympics have been completely transformed from something that merely had to do with sports to something that's directly linked to money, influence and an area's appearance. I adore Rio. I feel like it could even be my second home, if I ever chose to move out of my country. And it disgusts me how the country's own government doesn't care. That's nothing new, really; most countries worldwide favor money over actually helping their people but, in this case, they have enough audacity to disregard Brazilians so... obviously.
The worst thing youll ever experience in your homeland is to be treated as an alien or worst a garbage to be disposed. And we know that it happens in almost every country. 💔

This is heartbreaking, we need to see more of this in the news, not Kim Kardashian's latest surgery. Hopefully the Brazillian government will see what they are doing wrong soon.
let me tell you, it got worse, people are buying bones to make soup because thats all we can afford, real meat can go to up 20 to a 100, a full tank of gasoline is 25% of our minimium pay wage...
happens every time the international community shines a light on people with no money. all the people with money have to satisfy their guilt by becoming a cause-ist. cant go play sports in a poor nation w.o pretending to care a little to get rid of that guilt. just like Beijing 4 years ago...world cup...and all the others.
This is pretty common where tourism is a major industry. Here in Hawaii there was once a law that made sleeping on the streets illegal, many people saw this as pretty much making homeless people breaking the law just for being homeless, of course the law was later nulled after a few protests.
Nathalie Golding At the end, it always cames down to corruption and greed. People are greedy, you can't change that. If someone offered you 50 million you wouldn't care if you had to deport some poor people and destroy their homes. Or maybe you would care, but 95% of people wouldn't hesitate.
In a different way, the poor doesn't exactly live in the city, see if you can survive in beijing, you are guarenteed to be kinda well off. Instead of poor people, beijing covered up two things: air pollution and petitioners. They shut down factories in cities around beijing and pretty much jailed every petitioners. They also banned private cars in beijing during the olympics, and since factories were closed, the rural migrant workers went home so tourists won't see 'poor' people.
Marco Polo This is different case. USA, as unmoral as it is have right to decline refuges. They don't move people and destroy their homes, they decline help to people that are in danger of dying in their own country. Tottaly different.
+Zane Trusdale im talking about us americans and people from first world countries. All these people talking about how wrong this whole thing is yet theyll be directly supporting it when they tune in to the olympics
People still watch the olympics? I honestly find them boring and pointless, a long boring tradition involving many sports that died out because they were unpopular to the mass population, not only that but it invades every channel so there's nothing on tv until it's all done. Last thing I want to do is watch curling or ribbon dancing when I could be watching a new episode of some of my favorite shows.
If you watch TV on tradicional channels, there's no way to know if you're watching their channel unless they ask or keep a tracking device on your TV. If you turn on your TV, there isn't going to be a counter going up by one, TV ratings are estimates.
reminds me of that one simpsons episode about rio. They got a lot of backlash about it from the gov saying it's a "stereotype." Now i see they were mad that the cartoon was showing the real side. Not just the glamour side we always see on tv
+David Gooding Corruption ,I live here and so many people here are ashamed with situations that may happen and that are already happening ( like olympic village ).And the government is spending so much money, the money which it was to be spent on hospitals , security , infrastructure (sorry if my english is bad).
I live in Rio, in the south zone (I am white and speak english) and have two problems with this video 1st: The mayor and governor aren't cleaning the city up ONLY because there is international attention, there has been an underlying sentiment among the elites that the south zone, barra and downtown were getting to many settlements and there was starting to be too much crime and poverty in those areas, which leaves me to point number 2: Gentrification against those settlements isn't necessairily a bad thing. There is great real estate next to beaches that could have nice, affluent buildings built, however these ILLEGAL settlers have created HUGE (there are some with 100 thousand+) that are centers of crime, drug trafficing and violence, therefore it doesn't seem that wrong that the poliece remove these people from inhabiting this land that many times were supposed to be natural reserves or simply isn't theirs. Just a thought from a real person from Rio for you to think about
While I do understand your points but don't you think it would be more beneficial and ethical to spend money on these disenfranchised areas to make them safer, crime-free neighborhoods instead of just uprooting and evicting the poor that have lived there years? This way the poor can have a chance to move upwards in society as their dangerous crime-ridden communities have become safer commercial areas. It would only benefit the economy in the long run.
+Michael-Luca Natt like the drug trade isn t an operation of the elite and government there just as in the us. We ve studied it to death here and it goes to reason No 50 year drug war continues in failure without calculated organization. Then 100 years of economist have economies is shambles round the world without careful orchestration
They tried that before. I believe it was China at one point where they migrated the rich to poor neighborhoods and redistributed their lands. The previously rich people rose to the top again due to their knowledge of the economy and how money flows while the poor people who were given rich lives squandered it and rapidly lost capital until they were once more poor. The world isn't full of classes it's full of idiots. "In America there are no poor people, only temporarily embarrassed millionaires"
Atleast we don't hide our slums which give green cards to foreign media and foreifn filmmaker and they visit india to make a film like *Slumdog millionaire* and winning oscar by showing one phase of our country india
India’s slums redevelopment are among the fastest in the world in the last 5 years what are you talking about do you have to show my country in a bad light always complaining.
Yeah, why create jobs for construction and encourage tourism in this poor place. The last thing these poor people need is outside money being circulated into the economy. I think in the future only richer, more well off places should be allowed to host events that bring in such an influx of outside dollars.
Rio de Janeiro today's drowning in debts. They stopped to pay their professors at federal college's, a time ago they stopped to having classes. The healthcare is more horrible than before, the crime rate is increasing, even the army needed to intervene in Rio favelas again. The government cut their education budget for A HALF. The future of that state is dark.
Even though some public employees with these astronomical salaries, plus ridiculous benefits, are getting paid with no delay. Ex: Judges and Politicians
Poor people aren't the problem though there are some "groups" like gypsies (read as = not just poor but also beggars that spend most of what they got on booze and no long-term-value stuff) or whatever They're not the problem, the rich people that are powerful and corrupted enough to make policies that would be taking away from them the very/little left they got ARE the problem Being poor doesn't automatically mean being a beggar, beggars should be exiled, true, BUT poor should be helped True that is hard to distinguish the two but the corrupted f*ckers that buy laws and justice instead of succumb to it don't even try at all
This is why the London olympics were built on their legacy. They destroyed homes and a business park to build but made the stadiums and parks so that they could change them into something efficient after the games
Alexandra Venera actually many states and countries have laws that state of you live there for over a certain amount of time the land becomes yours. So by not claiming the land to begin with, in reality whosever land it was actually gives it up. If you don’t take care of your land, then at least most people take care of their homes
@@Fetch94 Yeah, I know. I live in a country where that's the law, and it still doesn't make it right. Like I said before, that's not how property rights should work. If you buy a piece of land and someone invades it, it shouldn't become their land. And also it's not like these houses on Rio were very safe to begin with. They were made by people who don't know a lot about construction and end up using materials that aren't fit for living, so that's just a tragedy waiting to happen.
@Alexandra Venera hah. Property rights dont mean anything. They just allow people trying to survive to get bullied. You should watch some videos (if this one didnt say) about what housing people can actually afford on their wages, suprise! Its this.

The thing about favelas and poorer brazilian districts is that they are where a lot of brazilian culture is generated. Many of the footballers, dancers, musicians, artists etc come from these places, the community spirit is huge and that stuff is what makes brazil unique. Hopefully something will turn around in brazilian politics because it looks like the left wingers have had their day, which is bad news for the poor, both in rio and elsewhere.
Culture typically comes up from the lower classes and is appropriated by the upper ones once it is 'safe' and 'popular'. While people talk about the wealthy being the creators, they generally are not. It is the poor and middle class that tend to take the risks and produce the majority of both wealth and culture, while the wealthy are more risk adverse and just sorta take advantage of what others make.
PC globalists like Hillary created the sort of thinking that said it would be a great idea for a third world country like Brazil to host the Olympics to begin with.

Rio is a mess, finances are in shambles, the police arnt even getting paid, and many of the facilities for the Olympics are yet to be finished, add on top of this a outbreak of Zika, and its becoming increasingly clear that Rio wasn't ready to host the games.
not only the police is not getting paid, but the firemen too. Also, hospitals don't have the money they were intended to because of internal corruption and our SUS (something like "Unique System for Health") can't cope with hundreds of people in need of medical attention for free - the government does not have the budget to it. Add to that that the State of Rio is practically broke and there's already a massive overbudget (around 4 billion, but I could be mistaken) for the Olympics, which money we know for sure is in the hands of few. I never was a politically active guy, but damn I am truly ashamed for my country right now.
They undoubtedly bought the games. This Olympics will be a catastrophe. How many tourists will be murdered in the two weeks? This will be the end of the I.O.C. and it should be!

Sometime ago the brazilian people got FURIOUS, then the truckers from all the country stopped working, the country went into a caos, the markets were running out of supplies, animals from farms were dieing without food, all the prices were getting so high, president was trying to do a lot of deals, the gasoline prices increased from R$3,60 to R$4,80 (sometimes even R$5,00 a liter). mr mister I learnt about favelas in my Secondary School, and I was disgusted in how Brazil just tried to sweep the problem under the rug
The authors I have been studying, point out that inequality and illegal settlements got out of "control" since the 1980's, under the Reaganomics and Thatcherism policies that imposed the neoliberal agenda and therefore increasing inequality.
mr mister revolution?

Events like these leave cities crippled and with facilities they have nothing to do with
Thankfully for my country, the amount of athletes is enough to fill in the facilities (since they turned into a training area, but still usable for the Olympics or anything like that). Plus there's the current pandemic, so they've been using some of the rooms for Quarantine.
@@wizoneoncereveluv9668 The Philippines. at least some of the arenas will be transformed in schools
at least some of the arenas will be transformed in schools
at least some of the arenas will be transformed in schools
With all of that said perhaps a remote area with no governing body directing it is a better idea.

looking back at this, what really angers me (as a Greek, too) is how the Olympics have been completely transformed from something that merely had to do with sports to something that's directly linked to money, influence and an area's appearance. I adore Rio. I feel like it could even be my second home, if I ever chose to move out of my country. And it disgusts me how the country's own government doesn't care. Just a thought from a real person from Rio for you to think about
Vox is always very bias. That's why I unsubscribed.
I knew there are always a different side of a story, thanks for sharing, there are no right or wrong opinions.
Welcome to VOX, where bias outweighs truth.

David, most revolutions do not end well. Look at Cuba, Russia, Venezuela & China
+Eryk Pyts commie
They tried that before. I believe it was China at one point where they migrated the rich to poor neighborhoods and redistributed their lands.
The previously rich people rose to the top again due to their knowledge of the economy and how money flows while the poor people who were given rich lives squandered it and rapidly lost capital until they were once more poor.
The world isn't full of classes it's full of idiots. "In America there are no poor people, only temporarily embarrassed millionaires"

Why don't poor people just buy more money?
lol
Poor people can't buy anything stupid
@Adam aren't you supposed to be in Summer School?
Because they don't have any money to buy it with, duh
Poor people aren't the problem though there are some "groups" like gypsies (read as = not just poor but also beggars that spend most of what they got on booze and no long-term-value stuff) or whatever
They're not the problem, the rich people that are powerful and corrupted enough to make policies that would be taking away from them the very/little left they got ARE the problem
Being poor doesn't automatically mean being a beggar, beggars should be exiled, true, BUT poor should be helped
True that is hard to distinguish the two but the corrupted f*ckers that buy laws and justice instead of succumb to it don't even try at all
This is why the London olympics were built on their legacy. They destroyed homes and a business park to build but made the stadiums and parks so that they could change them into something efficient after the games
Yeah, the London Olympic stadium is now West Ham's stadium if im not wrong.
Why would you remove people from their homes. Not cool!
Is it really their home when they took land that belonged to somebody else and settled there? I'm pretty sure that's not how property rights work.
Its this.
Also if youre not living on your land you obviously dont need it to survibe. End of story. Goodbye.
Being of Brazilian descent, I live this country. Every time I visit, I have some of the best times of my life. What's happening in Rio needs to be spotlighted more. I would love to see John Oliver do a piece on Rio or Brasil as a whole! It would definitely help a lot.

Fine, why cant we just ban people from middle eastern countries momentarily until terrorist acts decrease? Doing that isnt against the constitution, it allows us to disable entry from foreign countries. Idk why people are so againsg protecting ourselves, there is a clear trend of terroristic people. It starts with their origin.

Shut up, the Workers Party isn't a socialist party.
yes it is
Our government wasn't really socialist, but borderline socialist.
Everything they did was making the government bigger and our market less free, recklessly increasing our expenses and keeping people in perpetual poverty so they could get votes.

The real rio is THE PEOPLE AND CULTURE not the houses and looks from the "nice stuff they are replacing the old houses and places with"
The thing about favelas and poorer brazilian districts is that they are where a lot of brazilian culture is generated. Many of the footballers, dancers, musicians, artists etc come from these places, the community spirit is huge and that stuff is what makes brazil unique. Hopefully something will turn around in brazilian politics because it looks like the left wingers have had their day, which is bad news for the poor, both in rio and elsewhere.
exactly, this happens in many places around the world like sf and london.
Many Brazilians will disagree, even though it's true. They have extremely unfavorable views of those who come from the favelas, unfortunately.
+Wesley Carvalho is it true Brazilian society is more discriminatory when it comes to social class, rather than race?
Culture typically comes up from the lower classes and is appropriated by the upper ones once it is 'safe' and 'popular'.
While people talk about the wealthy being the creators, they generally are not. It is the poor and middle class that tend to take the risks and produce the majority of both wealth and culture, while the wealthy are more risk adverse and just sorta take advantage of what others make.
Do they do community robberies where they run up on tourist with machetes?
Rio needs a leader like Donald Trump, he would have built a bigger wall and had the poor people pay for it too. #NotRacist,JustSmallHands
PC globalists like Hillary created the sort of thinking that said it would be a great idea for a third world country like Brazil to host the Olympics to begin with.
lol joke went way over your guys heads XD 1st clue: POOR people PAY for the wall...
2nd clue: #...SmallHands
Final conclusion, just because you are not for Donald Trump (which neither am I, although all of the canidates are horrible) does not automatically make you intelligent
barack obama >>>>>>>>> Donald Trump
no
@mike
how much did obama do for poor blacks? nothing...
Chill down! You make it seems like Rio is like, let's say, France or the US, where you can be caught in middle of some mass shooting or a terrorist attack - Rio is not that bad.
