I am a father of three beautiful young woman…! I couldn’t be more proud of them and what they all taught me. To love more, to be more kind, patient and to give them the freedom they require to truly be who they want to be. I will fight for that righteous cause for them all my life, they deserve every chance I have had.

Thank you! Well written, well performed and absolutely true. That someone would even question this and feel "responsible" indicates that this issue has hit home. Yes, we need more voices and different stories. Having given up on movies coming out of the US for quite a long time because they're all about "one man fighting the ....(universe?)" and all those CGI or AI fight scenes which are extremely boring. Seeing real people with real stories would be something worth investing in. More power to women! They won't exclude men but they may not venerate them either!

Yes, free speech and any form of debate of topics that stem from human emotion is awful. Unless its coming from all females. I clearly have something to hide for saying so. How dare I use words. Map it all, frame me and send in the female vigilantes. The secret police. The facial recognition death-drones. It won't extinguish the fire in my soul, or the righteous inferno in our eyes and ears that will tear down this playground panopticon. Until it does.

LETTER TO ALL WOMEN : I grew up with women pastors, women who are the boss in marriages in family and friends, reading stories and novels written by women, listening to music made by women, and watching movies where woman are main characters, as well as having all of these things done by men. This is nothing new. And I am well older than Harland. Although one of the main messages in the Barbie movie is that the world would be a better place without men, we are not all bad. We are not all part of the patriarchy. I am not bad. No women can claim I hurt them in any way for the past 25 years, and before that be skeptical. I am a big fan of Louisa Harland, I think she's awesome. But I still have to say what I have to say. The binary star system is the most common in the universe. What Barbie missed is that it's not about women, or about men. It's about both coming together in mutual respect and communication. I'm not forgetting all the horror that women have to go through or the bad things that continue to happen. The world is a better place when we are together, not all alone together on our cell phones.

Can we as fellow humans just strive for equality in all its forms..regardless of gender, colour, race or creed…there is no need for discrimination…acceptance and tolerance are qualities that can be achieved.

Sadly, as the latest film 'origin' points out, human beings are hardwired to create inequality and look down on people they see as easy targets.

@CatsPJ Oohhh I'd love to debate you on this one. Evolutionary Anthropologists propose that the evolution of the human brain has not advanced as much as the world they've built. It would seem that most of our species are STILL hardwired to express dominance and power over others. To enslave. To build myths and useful lies around visible difference and otherness. ▶ And yet, in every recorded Age of Humanity, there have been memorable exceptions to my points. People who, by their deeds and choices, align more to your ideals! That those individuals or groups are still recalled today says alot about what we perhaps aspire to be.

Exactly. At our most basic, we are humans. No other adjectives are necessary as they only serve to begin separating us and creating division. Love yourself and Love all humans because we are the same, each imperfect in our own way and striving to live a good life while we have life to live. Peace Love and comfort to all humans.

I’m not so sure I believe in equality, I think it’s a quick answer to a complicated problem. Things in this world are intrinsically unequal, by their very nature of existence. Some people have great family, or wealth while others are born into the opposite. We have different genders and body types and especially different brains. As humans we can be fair to each other with context. Equality means everyone gets the same, fair means everyone gets a return based on contribution. I’m not into equality, but I’m hyper concerned about fairness.

Dear women, thank you for burdening us with all those expectations over the years that most of us never wanted. All the dirty work in politics, dying in the hundreds of millions in wars, dying in coal mines and on railroads, and on fronteers to feed women and children, facing up to enemies and economic realities and really, really tough decisions. It's been really had trying to be a man and live up to those expectations. Confusing at times too, nice guys come in last but if you try to be strong you're suddenly called an asshole. No matter what we do we're wrong.

I feel a real connection to what she seems to mean, but then she also seems to be applying the same sort of "Since A man did many of the oppressive/undesirable/unequal or otherwise evil acts then All men must be held accountable" that is of course absurd. Were this an off the cuff one time utterance, fair enough, but this is a letter, every word of which may be chosen carefully and for effect. Finally let's don't forget that the more important a subject, the more accurately we need to compose our words about it.

@@lululangford There's always a place for a not all men or not all women, because anything else is called prejudice. You can't label all women or all men about almost anything, just like you cant say all blacks are this or all whites are that, because they are not. The world is grey, not black and white. There are many, many men who are aware of the state of things for women and what they go through, one reason is we have mothers. To say yeah but doesn't have to imply that oppression, misogyny, or patriarchy is ok, or ignore it.

Eh. This "dear men" is then followed by a (generally on point) message that could have been better addressed to "dear tiny handful of men who hold the reins behind the vast majority of media content". Especially when we consider that there are (well informed?) stereotypes for those men, that to reach that point of power takes problematic personalities such as those of Harvey Weinstein.
Don't demean the many eager, genuine, cinematic megageek men who become directors. Same as with casting, the more options out there the better, all being worthwhile fits for something and then the decision-makers ideally choose the best fit for the job. Man or woman; shouldn't matter.
And don't demand males viewers for choosing to put their attention whereever it is they end up. Believe it or not, most men don't much care about the known or implied gender of the name in the director's chair; they choose whatever seems to appeal. Lord knows I don't understand the broad moneymaking appeal of the likes of Transformers (and I loved the cartoon and toys) and Fast And The Furious, but if that is what a lot of people want so be it.
Recent movie history is making it clear that trying to craft movies specifically to appeal to certain audiences (or, to take a movie of a certain presumed male genre type and then modify it to reflect presumed elements of movies that are assumed to be less male oriented) tend to fail...I assume because too much focus went to forcing those very elements rather than to telling the best story possible.
Tell the stories your mind and/or heart are begging to tell, and that should do the trick. One part of the video reminded me of the truth that so many of our long running stories (be them common threads or even actual specific stories) can be traced to clear indicators of "female" storytellers.

Yeah, I actually kind of wanted her to dump all over this kind of movie because it hides the great work that other women have done.
The thing that we should be hoping for as more and more women come on-line in all kinds of different disciplines is new ideas - and these particular movies were therefore a huge disappointment.
In some ways, I think the message "We can create really new power stuff *AND* crap. If you always choose the safe route that sells, you're going to get crap. Take a chance on newness."
But there really isn't much gender to that. The concept that you need to pay bills before you actually expand the art just isn't fair to women, but it has *NEVER* been fair to new artists, regardless of gender.

@mythgreatbritain5634 Serious reply. Sadly, I think this plea WOULD include men pretending to be women. Especially if (a là Lia Thomas) they'd already had an unremarkable career in the film industry. You can totally imagine someone like that receiving targeted grants or funding to 'tell their own stories'. /If however, someone of the standing of a Martin Scorsese suddenly rebranded as Martina, I'd suggest the majority of production companies and money would still be there for Martina. The body of work stands. Martin's decisions about his gender identity would be an international story, for sure. But would not be conflated with his talents and pedigree. (👀 That'd be something to see on the red carpet at Cannes though!)

But my main point is that this point of view as is biased as the point of view complained about that is also offensive. I don't see "new" stories coming on either side, really, but what is more important than that is communication and understanding. That can end patriarchy eventually. Having a chip on your shoulder about either gender, any race, ageism, none of that helps in the long run, it just lets off steam and gets a snicker from your fellow females now, just as if I complained to guys about women. They might identify with it, but it doesn't change anything or make anything better for me when I make fun.
