What Dylan said is quite true, I grew up in south London in the 1970s and they taught us nothing about Irish history. Only later did I realise the brutality of the British empire and saw it for what it was: a totally heartless, wicked con.

I was talking to a third generation ‘Irish girl’ from England who said it was only when she studied history in College that she’s realised that literally none of history of how the Irish were treated by the British was taught in British schools. Her grandmother was from Mayo and emigrated to England. It seems strange to me that neither her grandmother or her mother spoke to her about it at all.

Edit: But yea nothing about Ireland history is taught in British schools, I did a history thing this year while being homeschooled and it had an Irish history bit but it never taught it properly for Bloody Sunday it never said that the English shot ppl for no reason at all I was very disappointed so even when they ‘try’ they can’t explain what happened properly

Marathoned through all three series/seasons last weekend. Loved it! I was a Canadian teenager in the early '90s, so could totally relate. I see it compared to The Inbetweeners, which was a great show too, but the social and cultural climate and changes swirling around the characters had more in common with The Wonder Years (the American '90s series that took place in the '60s). Regardless, DG is its own show with its own voice (Lisa McGee's) and its own identity. Absolutely brilliant!

At least he was honest - I am utterly sick and tired of presenters/interviewers who talk to guests as if they are totally up to date with every aspect of the programme being discussed. In addition the first series of Derry Girls was a huge 'sleeper' - very few people 'got it' first time around.

Having grown up as a teenager in the 90s, watching shows like Father Ted, I really thought this type of comedy would never be shown again on TV, as everyone is so offended and 'comedy' these days is so watered down. Finally got round to watching, and I was hooked from the first episode. The comedy, the music, the outfits are all on point. Great chemistry between all of the actors. I laughed, I cried, I laughed until I cried the show was perfect.

So, I watched this show and I thought it was funny as Hell.
So, I told my friend that her teen daughters should watch it.
And after reviewing an episode, she said her husband thought it was inappropriate for his girls.
When I pressed him he said,
"Jesus Frank do you want them to commit suicide?"
Keep in mind they all watched Game of Thrones together, from beginning to end .

2:27 "making me a gemini." but auto english generated subtitles said making me a germany. which is what i had understood which is why i put the subtitles on in the first place. I absolutely love the irish accent, and in general, uk humor is just so rich. very fascinating to learn the actress who plays erin is actually from there. very cool. just started watching the show today and just finished the first season. good show i love the theme and setting of it all.

When talking about modern Ireland, one thing that needs to be mentioned was how a Protestant Irish Parliament successfully gained independence for Ireland between 1782 and 1800 during which time Catholics got most of their rights back, with most Irish people of different faiths uniting under the ideologies of either constitutionalism or Republicanism, with both in favour of varying degrees of Irish sovereignty/autonomy and increased personal rights.
This independence ended when a failed Republican Revolution in 1798 led British prime minister William Pitt to intimidate and bribe the Irish Parliament into merging the Kingdom Ireland into the UK after an initial Union vote failed. Ireland’s Parliament was forced to merge with The British one (though the courts and civil service of Ireland remained separate, but nominally subject to Westminster from now on).
People on both sides seem to have completely forgotten this chapter in Irish history, because Protestants and Catholics fighting together for an independent Irish Kingdom doesn’t fit anyone’s narrative, and yet it had a major impact on the island. Unionism, Republicanism and Constitutionalism all originate from the original Irish volunteers that used the opportunity of the American Revolution distracting Britain to revolt in 1782. This heralded the independence and has shaped all aspects of Irish politics, ever since
