- Today, former FBI Director James Comey testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee over the FBI’s 2016 Russia investigation-- the latest twist for a man whose life and career were transformed by fractious relationships with both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Now, the tale is dramatized in a new miniseries based on Comey’s own memoir. The title role is played by Emmy Award-winning actor Jeff Daniels. He speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about what drew him to play Comey.

Jeff's first five minutes or so in "Newsroom" is still one of my favorite pieces of television ever - I watch it again every few months and it still thrills.

Jeff Daniels is a thoughtful, well-informed man, something we need a lot more of. For all those who think of actors as just shallow, pretty faces who are in it for the money and have no business expressing their opinions in public, Daniels, and others like Clooney, put the lie to that canard.
America is no more. This not the same country that I grew up in, in the 50s and 60s . This is now America INC. Know how to play the game or get out of the way.
Nations are not corporations, they cannot be. Nations are based on history, culture and values not shareholders value. Corporations are also not democratic organisations, they vary in the level of authocracy but there is always a non democratic decision structure. Sooner or later the people of America will wake up to that, and will come back to the values stated on the American constitution or will build something new which is meaningfull to them. However, something that got broken cannot be put back in place, America's credibility is gone and the road to recover that is long.

Jeff Daniels is such a skilled actor. To go from Dumb and Dumber to the News Room, on stage in To Kill a Mockingbird, and now this...just wow. It kind of reminds me of Leslie Neilson in reverse, from legit serious dramatic actor to the Naked Gun series. That is having real range and professionalism.
no risk Jeff was a perfect cast for Comey, and he can play any character he puts his heart into. My regret is that I will never see him on broadway, but l know it was brilliant.
Why would you want to see someone in a play rather than in a movie? The details on set are just as important as the actor, himself and you can’t really get very much detail. on the stage. It takes way too much imagination to make it real.
He's the most powerful person in the country, but not the most important, as Jeff Daniels indicated. The rule of law is out the window. Decency, honest, respect, compassion out the door. This is indeed such a sad time. I guess we have a lot of lowlifes in the country. There's no denying it anymore.

When Trump was elected I thought, as a Federal employee (now retired), "well, the Federal bureaucracy is pretty robust, for the most part it's a meritocracy, career civil servants do their job apolitically, how bad could it get? As long as that core of the bureaucracy remains in place, we will be OK." Now I see that after nearly 4 years of Trump, most competent, apolitical federal bureaucrats are intimidated, fired or retired. Political appointees and sycophants are in charge. Agencies designed to protect the citizens such as the EPA are gutted and cannot perform their mission. Though we are only approximately 4% of the world's population and have been the world's leader in science and technology, we have 20% of Covid deaths.
All of that and more in less than 4 years. What will another 4 years of this do to our country? I shudder to think.

I don't believe that. Trump is just the symptom. I do not see Biden fixing the problem. What is the problem is the obscene concentration of wealth you have in the US. People tend to see money as a means to acquire goods and live with more comfort. Beyond a certain amount, it is much much more than that. It is a means to acquire power. So extreme wealth undermines the essence of democracy, that power sits with the people and not just a few select people. Extreme concentration of wealth and a lack of a middle class are some of the attributes of underdeveloped countries.

That scene looked like it could have been out of "The Godfather".
tRump is straight out of the Godfather, but for real. You couldn't live in Manhattan for 20 years and not know that. New Yorkers knew exactly what we were in for if he was elected. We yelled and screamed about it. 40%of America either never heard us, didn't believe us, or thought a Mafioso don was just the ticket. I worked closely with someone with whom I became friends. I knew she was rough around the edges,; only later did I find out that most of what she had told me were straight up lies and that she had been in prison for accessory to murder. That's who tRump supporters are.

Being a celebrity and great actor provides an audience the assurance that they have a greater knowledge and understanding of an issue. It does give them a forum for their bias right or wrong. While Jeff is quite thoughtful in his discussion, there are far to many celebrities that it would be best if they were silent.
Saw The Comey Rule, and I really believe it’s something everyone should watch. As he says, it’s very complicated and scary as hell.

It's interesting to see how each side sees the other side as breaking the country. I'm conservative and this is like a mirror image talk. Both sides see the other as corrupt and breaking the country. We need to be able to respectfully talk to each other, minus the name-calling.
You sir are what we need more of well said. More ppl need to get off the algorithm and think and therefore discuss respectfully then perhaps common ground and understanding can be reached.
Republicans have perennially projected their beliefs and behaviors on others. For one thing, the Democrats do not have the deviousness or foresight to be what the Republicans believe them to be. Knowing of trump for over 30 years, and seeing that corrupt conman sitting behind our resolute desk, makes me sick, and makes me angry that people are so uninformed of history, so uninformed of government structure, and so lacking of morals and character! What trump says he’s doing versus what trump is actually doing, are not the same thing! It will take generations to fix the mess he’s made of every damn thing!
I’m sad that someone like Trump is our president, but what really scares me is the amount of Americans who lack the intellect, moral integrity, and education to see through someone like him. I have alot of respect for Jeff Daniels and most of what he is talking about does have an Establishment centrist feel to it. He also wants to protect the integity of the writing and the TV series, including the character he's playing. Which I fully understand, but Comey is very calculating and not as honest we are led to believe. Also when Jeff discusses the system being broken in the last four years, I would completely dispute that, by suggesting the system was broken for the past one hundred years plus many more. The full incapulation of the entire political system arrived when Reagan allowed Corporations the ability to vote and spend as much as they pleased on politician's re election campaigns, either local, Senate or Congress. The decline of the US started when Nixon removed the Gold Standard. So on conclusion the system was already broken before Trump arrived, in fact Trump even being there indicates a failed system to begin with.
This is a great comment that gets at the heart of the problem. Things have been broken for a very long time without any work to create a better system or structure that can work.
No worries. Nixon said the gold window is only closed temporarily, and that its closure will not cause inflation.
The coinage was debased in the mid 60's, first from 90% silver to 40%, and then to none. The US was free to spend unlimited amounts of money with military contractors, and for young men who could not get out of the draft.

Jeff Daniels is the kind of person I think of when I discuss American politics and what we‘ve witnessed over the past two decades growing up in the heart of Europe. The insanity, the hatred, the bizarre and frankly scandalous descent of Washington and the political establishment into chaos, broadcast 24/7 around the world ... it was very intense and chilled us to the bone. But generalisations are lazy and when my friends or I myself judge in the heat of the moment, great people with brilliant minds like this actor and his ability to articulate his thoughts spot-on help us remember all the good men and women who went on national TV to give us something to hold onto. ❤️

I haven't watched the movie yet, but from everything I have read and seen, it makes me sit back and ask myself.....how in the hell did we get here?.....4 years of nothing but fallacies, and the endangerment of our country. I hope and pray that we can be pulled back from this cliff we are teetering on......because if we can't, then the USA will no longer be the great nation she once was. Many people....good people have left the administration, and I'm sure there is one or two left that feel someone has to stay and do what they can to protect our country. Jeff, as your unknown neighbor down the road about 40 miles in Michigan, you must know that we didn't lose self respect in the last 4 years, we have been losing it for the last 40 years, it was hijacked from us through deregulation and greed and disenfranchisement of the common good as a result. Trump's polarization was made easy by 40 years of nurturing it by those in power on either side of the political spectrum. We the people doesn't exist anymore, it's we the powerful and rich, and the rest of us are the victims considered "losers and suckers" no matter what color or social strata we are. The ones who are better off financially just don't know it yet. We live in the United Corporations of America, not the States. the rest of the world isn't laughing at us anymore, except maybe oppressive control freak nations . The majority in the free peace loving world are nervous as hell. If they all ask your opinion that's fine...why don't you run for office if you think you have the answers? Because you're a celebrity, your opinion counts. Not the rest of us...not even at the polls

Whoever acting Trump makes Trump look too thoughtful, even dignified. It is not an accurate casting. We are all familiar with Trump. He sounds much shallower and his presence is much more deplorable than being portrayed in the above segment.

I never understood why not voting / casting a deliberately invalid vote is a reasonable option for voters. Even if there is no great candidate to vote for, it makes sense to me to vote for the least worst option, rather than wash your hands of the whole thing.

It's not difficult to live in an environment with warm air in winter. Or to make drains to carry away storm water. To make rainwater harvesting systems to maintain groundwater. To Ban misuse of plastic packets. To stop indiscriminate spread of garbage and wastes. USA has a big part in th natural disasters that result when the people and their one elected representative doesn't comply.
PS. We need term Limits desperately. I do not feel the Congress or Senate even care 1 red cent for the people. I am disillusioned and deeply saddened.
