Restoring a junk hatchet!

  • This hatchet is nothing fancy put it is a good old tool, saved the handle and cleaned it up!

    Looks great DJ. I don't think i can take credit for the nail pins in the hammer handle but it does seem like a good idea. I have drilled and doweled and wire wrapped cracked handles and used nails in a pinch but i haven't tried to make them look decorative. That bluing looks awesome. It really took the bluing great. My grandfather had one of the waffle faced hatchets like it that he used for a framing hammer.

    I don't think the nails will help to avoid splitting, as you put them "in the line of fracture". I think you should have put them in the other way, to counter that line and maintain the fibers. But your tools, your rules !😊
