Australia's Wildlife Emergency | 101 East

  • For more than six months, Australia has been on fire.
    Millions of hectares have burned, dozens of lives have been lost, thousands of homes destroyed - and now a wildlife emergency is unfolding.
    It is estimated that as many as one billion animals have been killed. With bushland scorched, more animals are continuing to succumb to the loss of food and habitat.
    101 East travels to Kangaroo Island, a tourist destination off Australia's southern coast which has been ravaged by fires.
    Known for its stunning natural beauty and abundance of wildlife, conservation groups are now in a race against time to try to rescue and care for the island's sick and injured animals.
    Evan Quartermain, an ecologist, has been helping rescue as many of the surviving animals as he can, including the country's much-loved koalas.
    About 80 percent of the koalas' habitat on Kangaroo Island was wiped out by the flames.
    "There's corpses littering the ground. Nothing could have prepared me for it," says Quartermain. "It's extremely confronting, the amount of death."
    Another ecologist, Pat Hodgens, is trying to help save one of the world's most vulnerable species, the Kangaroo Island dunnart, a small mouse-like marsupial.
    There were thought to be less than 500 of them before the fires, but nearly all of their habitat has been destroyed.
    "This could be the next species to go extinct," he says.
    101 East meets the dedicated people fighting to save Australia's native animals.

    I hate that government can tell us that preventative urns and fire blocks are not allowed so it travels from area to area. The Wildlife management should just build fire barriers and have periodic burns because the government does not work in our best interest. In Australia , Brazil or America.

      I am. It’s very sad. They’re just trying to live too. But if they’re going to kill the other animals that could go extinct, it’s probably for the best. But still. They don’t deserve that.

    • @gwenratcliffe3815
      @gwenratcliffe3815 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. You're not the only one who is bothered. I am as well. While it is horrible the destruction from the bushfires to Australia's natural habitat and native animal population, by contrast I can't condone Pat's actions in his efforts to save the dunnart from further predation. Humane Society International is present and, yet inhumane acts are being enacted against innocent animals---feral cats, in this instance, to preserve another species which may or may not become extinct. Pat doesn't know this nor does anyone else. He doesn't know no matter his insistence that he is in possession of knowledge in support of this possible theory of the event's occurrence. Only God can realize and only God can decide the animals and Australia's fate. Who does he think he he is? Charles Darwin. Can the situation not be looked at from another perspective? One that is a little broader in scope than his own. The feral cats didn't start the fires on Kangaroo Island in the first place nor did they have any control over being homeless wandering strays attempting to survive in a natural environment ruined by fire. People were responsible for that. They didn't care about the cats just like Pat doesn't care. They abandoned them to the wilds. That's a scientist for you. He's an ecologist, isn't he? A scientist can be the hardest and the coldest. They can dice up animals in a lab without batting an eye or a thought for that animal all on the pretense that it is done in the name of science. The real reason it's done is because they're quite mad and extremely cruel. And I don't care who doesn't like what I'm saying--Pat--or anyone else in a similar occupation or with similar aspirations. I own cats. I like cats. And poisoning is cruel. And he's not thinking because something else could come in contact with the dead cat's body, or consume it and die as well. But that's a pinhead scientist for you.

      @nursyahirahwaheeda8628 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      totally bothered. why need to kill others to save others. it's their habitat and they aren't stupid. Invasive species? it's human right that invaded their habitat, invaded nature. killed camels, innocent animals. Human trying to do things logically, but ends up illogical.

    Instead of countries fighting and preparing to fight wars, and armies training and being at readiness, wouldn't it be great if armies could partake in a war against wildfires, and repairing the damage caused by wildfires, and focusing on the care of wildlife and plant life instead of humans. Humans would be the big benefactor in the end anyway.

    There are only two ways in which a fire can be caused : arson (human beings) or lightning. It´s known that certain people like to set fires, because they are enjoying destruction, suffering and killing (experts on first signs of psychopathy: arson and torturing of animals).

    Cutting down Trees 🌲🌲🌲🌲around are world from forests 🌳 to woodlands 🌳are releasing Toxins that the trees 🌲 have collect back into the Atmosphere and logging is cutting far quicker than planting around the world and adult trees 🌲 that take 45 years to grow store more toxins and carbon than just new planted trees does .
    If the logging continues to carry on then the weathers around are world will become a lot hotter and very aggressive storms will become life threatening for humans just because humans can’t stop eating massive amounts meat 🥩 just because jobs and money are more important than life itself .
    PLEASE SAY NO TO LOGGING and help protect the trees and the wildlife habitats that are so important to the world we live .
