But you can’t pluck the Celie and Sophia straight off the Broadway stage and then expect Teraji to keep up with their talent, so I really don’t blame her. Fantasia has been touring, several albums since American Idol, Broadway, in fact she was in the Broadway version of Color Purple which is why she was chosen for the movie.
A common misconception with musicals is that they are only used for escapism and levity. In reality tho, people write musicals because sometimes the best way to express direct emotion is through song. This may mean a happy emotion, but it can come from any emotional core. Miss Saigon, Les Mis, Next to Normal, even the Disney stuff specifically Hunchbacks stage version, they get an emotion out that fits the vibe while still having that musical element. Is it hard? Yes which is why sometimes musical movies don’t work and work better in animation orher times. But regardless, they are just more than whimsical escapism
Roxy singing Ciara is taking me out 1:07:42 . 😂 I love the original the most but the musical version was refreshing and filled me with joy. Fantasia and Danielle were fantastic!
This movie is a lot more colorful and less violent than the original, I found it to be visually much more stunning. I do think the original moved me a bit more given the seriousness of many of the scenes unlike this film, which showed lighter and less morbid versions of those same scenes. However one thing that’s certain- I believe Danielle brooks DESTROYED Oprah in their role. I said it. She deserves that Oscar nomination.
This book was required reading at school, and it wrecked me. Then I watched the original movie and it wrecked me. This version, though much lighter and more colorful than the original, still wrecks me! But, I love this story. It's such a heart-wrenching, beautiful journey of perseverance, struggle, and triumph. Bravo to everyone involved. It's a hard story to tell but they did it beautifully. Also, bravo to Roxy, you got through it a lot better than Greg did watching the original😂.
The book, the film, all version of it wrecked me. But hearing “I’m Here” in a theatre brought me to absolute TEARS. I don’t know how Fantasia did it, but the way her voice sounds during that song just shakes me to my core every time.
These songs make me cry. Especially I'm Here. Of course Cynthia Erivo is amazing, but this was also so heartfelt. And bro is right, being able to say "I don't *need* you to love me" "I'm beautiful" and "I'm here" is so hard to do and actually mean it. Especially when you have been beaten down.

@therealtamartian She was a singer before she took up acting. But to be in musical theater, it's a given that you know how to sing. Just because someone isn't widely known for a talent, that doesn't mean it isn't part of the package.
If you want to try more musicals I recommend The Wiz if you haven't seen it already. Also H.E.R. played Belle in the 30th anniversary Live Beauty and the Beast!

I think I understand what Roxy was trying to say. This musical version feels more authentic than the 1985 version, but also ends with seeing the full reconciliation (Albert earning a seat at the table) instead of having it implied with Albert moving off in the shadows.
I wanna say the main gripe I have w/ the remake are the director's keeping Mister in Celie's life. In the orginal film he gets her family to her and then leaves her be, but here they added him to her life again before he gets her family back. Even though Mister finally did right by her it doesn't mean he deserves a second chance to be around her. So, I don't understand why the director decided to go this route w/ him. Short story long, I wouldn't want the man who ruined my life to be around the new one I've made for myself. Edit: Also the sister should have been wearing purple. Why did they change that? ;-;
These songs make me cry.
If you pay attention to the beginning, especially in the original, Celie was in love and low-key obsessed with Suge before they even met. And a lot of those female Blues singers in the early 20th century, were bisexual, just like Suge.
Seeing how much you like this type of music I would definitely recommend listening to the “Hadestown” musical. Can’t wait for them to do a movie of it someday. But the soundtrack is phenomenal.
Greg, this was great! But you simply MUST react to Cynthia Erivo singing I'm Here (at the Tony Awards or elsewhere). She...OWNS that song and it is SO good! Would love to see your reaction. As a musical theatre gay who's also obsessed with Marvel and such, this channel is so pure and excellent! Thank you for all you do (and the rest of the Reel Rejects crew!)
So glad to see you reacting to musicals ❤ I’ve only seen the 2015 Broadway revival so music-wise, I’ll always prefer the stage version of the songs. But I’m so glad they got actual singer-actors to play these roles. Danielle Brooks was so funny on stage (and my favorite character) so very glad she got to portray Sophia on-screen. Unfortunately, Shug could be unaware how abusive Mister is because he always treats her well. I’m curious if Mister gets more redemption moments in the book. I still find it kinda sudden in the movie and the stage version how he changes in one scene/song. Mister sings about his influences (his abusive father, not getting things that make him happy) “so tell me how a man do good when all he know is bad”. Then, he decides to “do good”, especially after how he sees how Harpo was able to break the cycle of abuse.
Mr. Reject, Could you please re-release your reaction to the 1985 film “The Color Purple”? I tried to find it in your library but could find it. Thanks!!
Not sure Schindlers List was a fair comparison to the original Color Purple. Schindlers list was made years later. He did an excellent job with both, but its hard to imagine that Schindlers List didn't benefit from lessons learned, good and bad, from The Color Purple.

Greg, if you like the rythmic call/response work songs in this film, I have a suggestion for you to look up Branford Marsalis' version of the song "Berta Berta". It's a prison work song made famous when used in the August Wilson play 'The Piano Lesson'.
I prefer the Broadway productions over the movies and I can’t place this movie against the original. They both have amazing elements and focus on different aspects/pieces of the book with different ways to portray Alice Walker’s words from the book. I love that Alice Walker got to be present during filming to see this theatrical reimagining. Great work, great storytelling, great everything.
Rev. Avery played by David Alan Grier is also in the 90s comedy spoof sitcom 'In Living Color' as Blaine Edwards along with Damon Wayans as Antoine Merriweather and the devilish pastor Rev. Lonnie Love on the hit TV sitcom Martin.
Greg THANK YOU. THANK YOU for reacting to this one. Your reaction to the original is what made me a Subscriber. I was hoping you'd keep your word and review this one. So glad Danielle Brooks has been nominated for everything. I dont understand why she's not winning and it's not more of a battle between her and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. This film shouldve gotten Oscar noms. Like you both said, the cinematography on this is beautiful.
Some Brilliant classics for your patreon subscribers to consider Gangs of New York … Daniel Day Lewis and Leo DeCaprio Jane Got A Gun,.. Joel Edgerton, Natalie Portman Mystic River, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbin, directed by Clint Eastwood There Will Be Blood… Daniel Day Lewis, Paul Dano Cowboys and Aliens… Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford
If you want a fab movie that has great songs, give The Producers a try. Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick & Uma Thurman. One of the best numbers is a song & dance called Springtime for Hitler (and Germany). And yes, Hitler sings & dances.
Fantasia played Celie in the og Broadway production from 2010-2013, then something happened with her vocal cords and Cynthia Erivo took over. Danielle Brooks played Sofia on the Broadway run from 2015-2017 I prefer the broadway live versions of I'm Here. Both Fantasia and Cynthias are phenomenal, the movie version took the emotions out of it for me, otherwise though I absolutely loved this movie.

1:02:05 i was at the movies watching this and man…. this song made me think about my nephew….. never got to hold the little guy….. i was in there trying not to boohoo cry
I went into this movie knowing very little about it and absolutely loved it. Even though i dont usually like musicals i think they did a phenomenal job here. The cast is so talented!!
I don’t watch musicals and I haven’t seen the original yet. So I went into this blind. I was absolutely amazed definitely one of my favs!
Greg, if you like the rythmic call/response work songs in this film, I have a suggestion for you to look up Branford Marsalis' version of the song "Berta Berta". It's a prison work song made famous when used in the August Wilson play 'The Piano Lesson'.
That's how we felt about Danny glover... til this day
Great point about how the original felt like a made for tv movie in comparison to this version and in comparison to Schindler’s List. 💯
Can you please react to “Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical”?
Yesss!
Yes. And since we're talking novels by Roald Dahl turned into musical movies, Wonka would also be a good reaction.
1:08:56 What hatred do you have for this abusive rapist in your heart
Rev. Avery played by David Alan Grier is also in the 90s comedy spoof sitcom 'In Living Color' as Blaine Edwards along with Damon Wayans as Antoine Merriweather and the devilish pastor Rev. Lonnie Love on the hit TV sitcom Martin.
Fun fact: Danielle Brooks and Corey Hawkins went to school together and they’re both very close friends.
43:22 The other guys wives don't like her
Please react to The Society of Snow!! It's nominated in this year's Oscars for Best International Film and it is also based on a true story
1:14:18 Whoopi and the color purple has 11 Oscar nominations and won zero of them. Biggest snub ever
Greg you should watch peacemaker. Danielle Brooks is amazing in it
It’s the “thank goodness Greg” for me at the end 😂
Greg THANK YOU. THANK YOU for reacting to this one. Your reaction to the original is what made me a Subscriber. I was hoping you'd keep your word and review this one. So glad Danielle Brooks has been nominated for everything. I dont understand why she's not winning and it's not more of a battle between her and Da'Vine Joy Randolph. This film shouldve gotten Oscar noms. Like you both said, the cinematography on this is beautiful.
Roxy! Striar!
Fun reaction!
Incredible film! Can't wait for you to react to Wonka. The other WB musical
They already did! It was a fun reaction.
Some Brilliant classics for your patreon subscribers to consider

Mystic River, Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbin, directed by Clint Eastwood

Such a beautiful film!!
The color purple reprise 1:08:11 is just everything
If you want a fab movie that has great songs, give The Producers a try. Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick & Uma Thurman. One of the best numbers is a song & dance called Springtime for Hitler (and Germany). And yes, Hitler sings & dances.
The director, Blitz Bazawule, is not African American. He is Ghanian.
I jumped for joy seeing this
The original was nominated for 11 or 12 Oscars and won none.
I can’t stress on how much this movie is AMAZING!
Fantasia played Celie in the og Broadway production from 2010-2013, then something happened with her vocal cords and Cynthia Erivo took over.
Danielle Brooks played Sofia on the Broadway run from 2015-2017
I prefer the broadway live versions of I'm Here. Both Fantasia and Cynthias are phenomenal, the movie version took the emotions out of it for me, otherwise though I absolutely loved this movie.
