As for me, I went in with a cynical mindset and was absolutely surprised at how much I loved this film. One of the most underappreciated movie of 2023 ngl. This movie is so fun and whimsical. The songs are amazing, there is no bad song in this movie. And Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka is great, although he's playing Wonka with a different perspective, and obviously not better than Gene Wilder, but nobody can deny that he's very charming and committed to this role. Also no oscar nom for production design?? Still a really, really fun time!

I love most of the set production, but the chocolates should have been designed by a food stylist; I totally understand the original aesthetic of the first movie and maybe the source material had like toy shapes and novelties as edibles, but I think the audience should be envious when the food is shown (“Chef”, “Paddington”)
not a failing, just a missed opportunity in an otherwise very rich production landscape

21:38 - This is based on the book, and the musical written by Roald Dahl. The edition that was done by Gene Wilder, while revered by audiences now, was done AGAINST the wishes of Dahl. He stated that Wonka wouldn’t harbor as much anger as displayed. They also changed the role of Slugworth, and removed the rest of the candy makers. When that film was released, it not only did poorly- it was a FLOP. The reason it became popular was its sale to a television network, that aired it annually. Then monthly. It became a semi-religion for kids to watch it when it was on. Movies weren’t really on TV just yet. The same thing happened with The Wizard of Oz. It creates a connection to a film, that when we watch back…. Really wouldn’t make it had it been written in 2024. Now, before his death Dahl had written his own screenplay. They used it as a reference for Johnny Depp’s edition, and The Broadway Musical. This film, is based on the book and the Musical.

Saw this in theaters with mom and grandma during my Christmas break last year. I’m in college and love the original 71 version and anytime it’s on tv I watch it. This movie was great with some nods back to the original gene wilder movie like the original oompa loompa flute tune wilder played back then Hugh grant sings the song.
When pure imagination started at the end with the factory being built in cgi it reminded me when the kids go through the chocolate room in the 71 movie.
Yeah, some of this is just nostalgia if you grew up in the 70s.
“World of your own” I loved that song couldn’t stop listening to that song after the movie was over.
At the beginning of world of your own wonka said “count to ten make a wish” something like that it’s a call back to pure imagination in the 70s movie too. Except wilder says “ count to 3 make a wish but a nice little callback to the original.
Oh and I forgot “scratch that, reverse it.” Was so memorable.

Here's a fun fact: Timothée Chalamet and Tom Holland were the frontrunners for the main role which honestly makes me wonder how would this movie be with Tom instead of Timmy, also Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling and Ezra Miller were considered as well for the role

It was so fun and the movie is great. I didn’t even realise it was a musical and I was so happy. Timothée Chalamet and Calah Lane were fabulous, even Hugh Grant surprised me. And of course Olivia Coleman is always fantastic.

Its a very sweet movie (pun not intended). Did it need to exist? No, but its much better than it had any right to be. Is it like the original? No, but movies (and especially movie musicals) have changed a lot since the 70s.
Lil connections to the OG film i like:
    - The washroom set up and how that clearly influenced Willy's Inventing Room from the first movie.
    - The inspo for the Golden Ticket being his mothers lil note on sharing chocolate with people one cares for.
    - Willy dropping the silver coin into the drain, which is a wink to Charlie finding the silver coin in a drain that leads to him finding the golden ticket.
    - Given how itd be super random otherwise, I think Abigail is either supposed to be (or is at least a nod to) the giraffe from "The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me", another Roald Dahl book where the protag ends up running a sweet shop and selling Wonka sweets
    - Scrubbit and Bleacher clearly being The Twits is very funny
Honestly my biggest compaint is the comedian character, he's lame af. They could have written him out and the movie would have been inherently better for not wasting precious screen time on him. He's not funny, and he doesn't have a skill that actually comes into play in any way (the movie tries to justify him by having him pretend to be the zoo keeper on the phone, but literally any of them could have done that)

I will say this may be my favorite Willy Wonka film they have made, Gene Wilder is Iconic, & while a lot of people enjoyed Johnny Depp, I personally never liked his rendition of the film. This film means so much to me because it came out right when I needed it & I was considering completely giving up on my dreams, its movies like these that can really re-invigorate the passion for what you love, I’m not calling it perfect cause there are definitely flaws, but it came out right when I needed to hear the message this film was giving, & I wish I had this film as a kid. Kuddo’s to the entire cast & crew for all the hard work they put into this film, & I genuinely believe people will talk about this film for years to come & I hope they continue the story if they can cause I would love to see Timothy Chalamet return & portray his version of Wonka again but continue to grow it into the version we see with Gene Wilder, I think Chalamet has the acting chops for it & I would be there opening night for any sequel for it! I just hope I’m not the only one who shares this sentiment & thank you Reel Rejects for the amazing reaction to it!

Says he did'nt have the orignal movie on his mind while watching, instantly contradicts himself a second later and proceeds to do it for the rest of the review. Dude if you've gotta complain about a movie like this sorry your a cynical sourpuss, it's not perfect but it does'nt need to be and it's not trying to be. It's just a charming feel good movie showing clear love and respect for the orignal film as best as it can while making sure to be it's own thing too. Timothy Chalomaet did'nt need to be Gene Wilder to be a good Wonka

44:04 I was also confused by this thinking "oh no... not another pointless race swap...." but then I went back and watched the original and yep Wonka had hired someone to pose as Slugworth as a way of testing the kids to see who was in it for the passion not the pay. This movie showed us the actual Slugworth.
speaking of the original I actually can see Gene Wilder shine through in Timothee's performance there are faint glimmers here and there throughout he isn't nearly as serious as Gene's and he shouldn't be as he is portraying a younger Willy trying to learn the secret of sharing his dream in such a dark world.... there were even "callbacks" which showcased why Willy implemented what he did during the grand tour in willy wonka and the chocolate factory... the contract... the golden tickets.... the catchphrases.. the songs.... he learned so much and used it in a good way.... to me this is a prequel done right... a rare breed nowadays.

They really pulled from the movie Annie as well. I loved the original and I have the VHS tape of it. I did NOT care for Charlie and the chocolate factory. I LOVED this version. I personally felt that Timothee was more reminiscent of Wilder than Depp. But that is just my opinion. I teared up throughout this movie because there were so many easter eggs to the OG and Annie. The film does grow on you for sure throughout. And the movies budget was 125 million and it grossed roughly 553 million thus far worldwide, so it made well over 100 million in profit. It was more financially successful than Depps version. :)
