bro I was editing 1.5 hours of raw footage, and was getting fed up with the lag, and this video helped insanely much. It will probably improve my experience on shorter heavier edited videos aswell, as someone who uses vegas multiple times a week this is just so nice

To say this tutorial was a life saver would be an understatement. Vegas user from the very beginning. Sonic Foundry beginning. Have never had a completely satisfactory experience, but always thought they were just one version or build away from perfection. Always frustrated with GPU acceleration. It was a lot faster, especially renders, if you could just keep it running long enough to finish without crashing. So most of the time I just left it off. Just updated to Vegas 18 couple weeks ago, then a new PC build. 12 core AMD, 64GB, nVidia RTX2060, 2TB m.2 SSDs. Lightening fast, GPU unbelievable. 6 layer multicam editing at Best/Full resolution previews. But.... after a few days and more elaborate projects it started crashing. I started disabling the GPU. Running Preview Half quality res. Turning off all thumbnails on timeline. It got so bad it would barely load. Under tremendous pressure to finish a job with a drop dead deadline I went looking for answers.
Then I found this video. WTF? Why did someone on creative cow not tell me about the "Open CL/GL interop" 8 years ago? Seriously? As for the RAM setting, I had played with that but always assumed it was just for RAM preview, never guessed it improved other functions like thumbnail generation. From the experiments I made it sometimes increasing the RAM appeared to make matters even worse. Other advice I was getting always started with turning OFF GPU acceleration.
So to wrap this up. I followed all your direction except timeline thumbnails. Sorry I need them, lost without them. But it doesn't matter, because this rig now can play at full resolution, while building thumbnails on the timeline. Something it had never done before. thanks! big thumbs up! subscribed. joined.

You should also add one more thing... Click on the help menu, and run the driver update utility. This will install the best recommended driver for VEGAS on your system, though it currently only works for Nvidia cards. For AMD cards, make sure you install the Enterprise driver, not the game drivers they give you by default. I just helped a user on the forums fix their issue this way, one click on the driver update utility, and their problems were gone.

It's worth noting some users are reporting that after applying these fixes, they are getting errors with some projects not opening, VEGAS is asking for an internet connection even though one exists. I'm not sure which change triggered it, but one of them did, as when the user reversed these suggested changes, the bug went away.

Since first checking in with you, I've done the following 7 things, trying to get Vegas Pro 18 to do any render at all:
    1) Did latest Windows 10 update
    2) Did Vegas Pro 18 factory reset
    3) Did NVIDIA driver update
    4) Enabled legacy AVC and HEVC decoding in File I/O
    5) Set GPU acceleration processing to "NVIDIA" (also tried turning it OFF)
    6) Dedicated a third of available Dynamic RAM
    7) Set both Open CL/GL interops to "FALSE"
And --- after all that --- attempted to render several very short, basically unedited MP4s to the factory default project settings.
And Pro 18 still will not render anything. Nothing at all.
I should mention that Vegas Pro 14, which is on the same machine, works fine.
Can you suggest any further steps.
Thanks so much for all your help so far.

It's not you. Vegas 18 sucks and cant properly use the GPU yet. Lots of people complaining. Magix needs a swift kick in the ass to fix their software. Typical new version launch from software companies. They don't give a shit about stable version releases. If you have at least 32GB of ram, use DaVinci Resolve. It's free and renders put Vegas to shame.

    • @ScrapyardFilms
      @ScrapyardFilms  3 ปีที่แล้ว

That is a common issue that the devs are aware of. I typically keep legacy decoder disabled if I'm working in 10bit but as soom as I switch to 8bit, I enable it for the best reliable performance.

Best thing I can suggest is upgrading your video editing rig. That's a thick file you're working with.
You can also try manually creating your own downscaled video proxies using handbrake and simply 'Replacing' the media in the 'Project Media Tab' with the lower quality files. Then once you're done editing, re-replace it back with the high quality files.

    Josh, PLEASE HELP.
My new Pro 18 will not even BEGIN to render. Goes directly to a "Vegas Pro has stopped working" error message.
I made all three of your suggestions in Options. Was careful to both "Apply" and Restart my machine. None of that helped.
I've tried rendering different source/edit files. Tried importing things via Import, instead of drag and drop. None of the obvious things seem to help.
    Any other suggestions ?

      That's pretty weird.
      * If you haven't already, make sure Windows 10 is updated to version 2004. Keep on running Windows update until it is.
      * Also make sure your graphics card drivers are the latest they can be.
      * Then hold Control+Shift while double clicking the VEGAS icon on the desktop. Check the box to clear data. This factory resets VEGAS.
      * Then import a small video file and try to render using these settings: th-cam.com/video/t6PPUD6ZROs/w-d-xo.html
If that doesn't work. Try re-encoding the file using this Handbrake video: th-cam.com/video/DiDmUg8aRnE/w-d-xo.html
      * Finally if you're still having problems, Uninstall VEGAS using this program, Geek: geekuninstaller.com/geek.zip
Then download the latest VEGAS installer from here: rdir.magix.net/?page=SI7T5A3Q7668
And reinstall. Make sure to Restart your computer before loading up VEGAS and trying it again.

Haven't tried any of this stuff yet, but you've definitely made a friend with the magnitude of your reply. Thank you SO much.

I'm running Vegas Pro 18 as well. i7 7700k 4.5ghz with GTX 1080 GPU with 32GB ram. 18 was crashing on me every ten minutes. I follow your steps and 18 hasn't crashed in the past three hours. Its funny. You go to the Vegas official forums to look for help, but you're greeted with condescending, toxic, self-absorbed losers who blame you for not including a spreadsheet of your computer stats/specs in the post. Then proceed to ridicule and belitte you for not following the initial troubleshooting phases, because hell, they're not apparently having a single issue or problem with the program. So they need to justify their petty existance and talk down on who they deem bigots and lower class peasants since they lack a sense of achievement and attention in life. Thank hell I never bothered posting, but I saw threads where people just asking for help were accused of venting and complaining and then you know the rest of the story.
I come here and follow this awesome guys step by step five minute video and my problems solved. This is the kind of TH-camr we all want to look for, for trouble shooting. It may or may not work, but this guy just gets to the point and explains it very simple and clear. Mad kudos for this, liked!

Hello, what is your recommendation for a new PC build for VEGAS Pro 17 (I currently do not plan to upgrade to newer version of the software)?

Hey, could you please tell me what to do when I have not option "NVIDIA NVDEC" (I have NVIDIA RTX 2080) in "Hardware decoder to use"? There is only "off" option

Thank you for the tip. My Vegas pro 18 is running better. However, I am experiencing an anomaly. Now and then, my timeline freezes. I still have audio playback and I can still save, restart and all is fine again. That is until the next time it happens. This only seems to occur after Vegas has been running for a bit. Any ideas?
