Props to the new Angry Video Game Nerd episode for having this game. I had no idea Commodore 64 can have this type of music. Definitely one of the most badass themes I ever heard in a video game!
My thought that is that video game music is truly art unto itself. The chipset in the C64 had some muscle that few think about. Kind of how the GBA music chip had a slap-ton of hidden power too.
If I had played this game back in 1988, the music would blew my mind. This game should be in the video game hall of fame just for the kickass sound track alone. Kudos to AVGN.

Just fyi, this is the 1:1 original PAL speed version of the song. As it is meant to play :) Netherworld is one of the early masterpieces of Finnish commercially released games and the game is displayed in the Finnish Museum of Games as one of the cornerstones of the whole Finnish industry. www.vapriikki.fi/en/pelimuseo/ The song itself runs on Jori Olkkonen's own custom coded music routine and it is truly excellent example of using sampled sounds on C64 hardware. Very CPU intensive too, so no chance of running it during gameplay. Also, see below the composer's (Petrik) comment:
The music routine was coded exclusively for Netherworld, and has not been used in any other release. It started out as an experiment - I wanted to find out if it was possible to play more than 1 sample simultaneously. It was. Netherworld has 4 (drums + bass + 2 guitars). I played + recorded the distorted guitar samples myself, and snatched the bass and drums from somewhere (don't remember the source).
@@petriksalovaara2805 Thanks Yip. Everyone, that guy, Petrik, is the original composer & coder for the Netherworld soundtrack you're loving so much here.

For anyone coming here from the recent Nerd video, and you're interested in some more awesome C64 music, look up the work of Rob Hubbard. His arrangements are the stuff of legend. Also, give the soundtracks of the Last Ninja games a listen.
Digitunes like this are mostly based on CPU-banging, so the features of the soundchip don't really matter that much. An AY or POKEY chip would do fine.
In this case though it's using audio samples, not the synthesizer. So the experience is along the lines of what you got with a SNES video game (which supports 16 audio samples at the same time while this Amiga game plays 4 at a time).
Game Developers: "Okay, Jori, this is a new thing called a 'video game'. This may not go well, so no need to go too hard on this soundtrack." Jori: (a stream of fire comes out of each ear of his headphones as he removes them) "I'm sorry, did you guys say something?"
Everyone forgets that when it came to making audio and graphics systems, Commodore kicked serious ass. I mean, there was a long period where the Amiga series was the preferred media workstation, with the later Amigas being the weapons of choice for early 3D graphics.
@@moonlightact1792 21,000. This tune is doing numbers. I wish all great tracks like this got special shout outs. The numbers show the audience is there; they just don't know the tracks exist.

Very very impressive for a 1982 hardware considering how the other versions (DOS : 1990) sounds bad Completely crazy to have done such a song for a title screen, ppl are used to skip it after 4 seconds lol Ty AVGN to have made us discover this work of art
Back at that time the title screens often had the best musics. People did stay and listen to those. The musics during gameplay had to compromise more with the raster time and sound effects, so the composers couldn't go full throttle then. But they could throw everything they could to the title song!
I used to wait on the title screen until the song ended, if it was a good one. And play to get into the high scores for the same reason. Parallax a case in point, as well as Rambo.
Even with this quality, the music sounds amazing. I wonder if there's any chance an uncompressed, original version exists somewhere... that would be a treasure to find.
Most game composers do, just that tech is good enough so they don't need to reinvent the wheel just to get good sound, so now they experiment on new things of using the music to express what you're doing like in the doom reboot, to immerse you in the world like elder scrolls, or to simply complement the worldspace they belong to like most modern games
I love how I keep forgetting this game's name but, when I feel like listening to this amazing tune I simply type "commodore best music" and this always comes out.
If you want an experience more closely matching the sample heard in the AVGN clip, set playback speed to 1.25x but note that that is not how the music is intended to be heard.
For the remix, first time through is mono sound with the music slowly fading in with volume (full on LowFi), then after the drop at the end before the loop, you pull a "Pokey Means Business" and the full epic rock version comes in at a slightly elevated speed.
