As a long-time rock musician myself I always wondered if my heavy metal music could have its cuteness or maybe could be combined by cuteness and now, here is the answer to my question...
There were proto ideas of blending & incorporating pop or jpop or kawaii element in heavy music (hard rock / metal) even before Babymetal, but they were not developed, refined or established very well. In Japan, we can see Judy & Mary, with their idol-like singer, cute singing & their rock music. There were amateur works also, for example the rock cover of Morning Musume songs (one of the earliest popular Japan's idol group). I've jammed to one of them (Osaka Koi no Uta). Then Babymetal came into the scene & boom!!!
The energy they created throughout the song, especially on the second chorus! You cannot fake that kind of stage presence. These young ladies are absolute stars!!!
