    Excellent story, with great pictures, about an otherwise forgotten shipwreck. Knowing a bit about steam engines and riverboats, it may be significant that the ship's boiler burst as she started off, when the demands for steam and increased pressure are particularly great. American riverboats had a bad record for explosions, fires and other disasters, but they seem to have been accepted as 'par for the course'! As an aside, a similar disaster occurred on the River Loire at around the same time - this one taking out most of the local town council who'd gone for a pleasure jaunt. The survivors promptly passed a law banning all steam powered vessels from passing their town - and this wasn't repealed until only a couple of decades ago. (I suspect it was quietly forgotten, the Loire being an important trade route.)

    Thanks for the video. I'm glad to hear that the accident did bring about changes. I think throughout the world there are numerous hotels called The Steam Packet.

    Those above the boiler were probably saved by the explosion energy bursting outwards from the poorly made boiler rather than upwards.

    Amazing story. To think that just over 200 years ago 10 year olds were working on building bridges and an array of other occupations I gather. An observation of the time, there wasn't much imagination used when naming children. So many John's and Mary's. And horses pulling ships up the river? Was it so shallow that one could wade through it to their destination!

    • @alittlebitofhistory
      @alittlebitofhistory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At the time it was very popular to use name from the Bible so loads people were called John, Joseph, Mary, Paul, Eve, etc. Although parts if that River are pretty shallow anyway the horses would be up on the bank walking along side the river.

    Excellent, as always. How is the word 'Norwich' pronounced with the older Norfolk dialect? Being brought up in Essex I still pronounce the 'wich' at the end as 'ridg' with the accent of the 'g'. Thanks for sharing!

    • @alittlebitofhistory
      @alittlebitofhistory  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure I have only ever heard it pronounced how I say it, although some with a stronger accent make it sound more like Narrwich.

    Thank you for anoher great video. I was wondering if steam-driven paddle-steamers were ever used on the Broads or around the coast of Norfolk or Suffolk?
    I hope to see Suffolk videos around soon.

    • @alittlebitofhistory
      @alittlebitofhistory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure if there were any historically there is a modern mock up one that gives tours now but its not a real steam ship, I will have to look into it and find out. I don't really keep a schedule of what will be covered week to week but there is going to be what I hope is a really good video on one of Suffolk's most infamous sons at the end of Oct.

    The problem in Britain is every tale involves London, London and some more London...see where I'm going with this, I'm pretty sure you're British and you were clueless, just my opinion Sir, for what it's worth!!!🙏😢❣️

    • @alittlebitofhistory

      That is a large part of why I started this channel to tell the stories from this part of the country, but at times it is impossible not to mention London if it is involved in what I am trying to tell.
