A large portion of lambs entering the market in the east come from hobby farms. One of the biggest challenges for lamb producers that are operating as a business in the east is competing with hobby farmers. Many hobby farmers will continue to supply the market with lambs at a loss by subsidizing their operation with off farm income. Most of them have no idea how much they are losing. This makes it difficult for serious efficient producers who rely on profit from lamb sales to be "the last man standing" and reap the rewards of a short supply of lambs.
