I love the fact that you're actually compelled to really catch Shield Knight and you wouldn't dare let her fall during your 1st playthrough.

I accidentally let her fall during the second dream because I got overwhelmed by enemies and was nowhere near her.
As she was falling I was literally whispering to myself "No, god damn it, I have to catch her."
All of this. And Good God the feels! This song is powerful enough to invoke so much with feelings, and invoke so many memories.

this is accurate like even tho u don't need to catch her (i failed once and there was no changes whatsoever) it still is tempting like if it was what your life desires the most
I truly loved the feeling of desperation, like everyone said, there is no rewards nor a penalty for not catching her, it's in a way a useless cutscene that doesn't benefit the player so, in theory they can just afk and let the sequence play itself. But when your at that moment, you listen to the song as enemies come from every corner and in the middle is shield knight falling, and the text objective of "catch her" give you this sense if responsibility, you are not the player anymore you became Shovel knight.
This is a scene where narrative and gameplay work perfectly together.

Even if it is just a game, I couldn't help but feel Shovel Knight's pain, guilt and sorrow as he desperately tried to catch her each time, despite the respawning enemies. The last time you catch her really hit me hard because it was exactly what I would have said. "I caught you, and I'm never, ever letting you go!"
MechWarrior894 I've figured out (through cheats) that there are a set amount of enemies, but through the normal game would be pretty hard to do. I refuse to try it either

Honestly didn't let her fall in any of the sequences where you had to catch shield knight, this theme just sends chills all over my body. Even when the enemies where swarming me I was like "Fuck the enemies, I *HAVE* to catch her."

+AetherSolace During my "NG++" challenge, I actually "died" in the last dream sequence when she just got on screen about to hit the ground. To me, that brief instant held some symbolism: the fight gets harder and harder, and Shovel Knight fears that there will come a time where it's too much and he won't be there to catch her.

I find it amazing that a game, in an 8-bit format, with outstanding chip-tune, could portray such emotion and feelings with it's music. It made you feel pumped up at times, or made you tense up, or in this case, it made you feel calm, almost sad.

One of the most powerful 8-bit melodies I've ever heard. What a great piece of music.

I love this song. In every dream, you forget who you are, and experience everything through a doubtful shovel knight. The text at the end of the game... was so tense, yet beautiful. You could tell that during that time, shovel knight's heart did not falter. After all his travels, he knew inside that sheild knight was *alive* . I know that the name "Shovel of hope" didn't exist yet, but I wished sheild knight would say:
You never gave up on me, you never gave up *hope* .
Every time I beat the game, I do not skip this text, this music... makes me forget my own problems... or it emphasizes them
This song shows the pain and desperation Shovel Knight experiences without his old friend. It really hits hard. The feeling when you finally do “Catch Her!” cannot be topped by anything else in any other video game.

I always thought whenever this seen comes is just like a memory of them in the tower of fate (plus you can see that at the start of the game when it tells you the story there is that seen when she is falling into purple/pink liquid pool of dark energy and shovel knight is reaching his hand to save her but he failed ever since then that moment of failure was chasing him through his dreams to remind him of the time he screw up everything nan so he left fearing that one day he will do the same with all the oothers he loved,some say behind his helmet a strong guy some say he is a catfish some say it is his head some say he's a coward/traitor but behind it is a face filled with tears on his lost friend
One of my faves considering it uses video game to tell stories they way they're menat to be told, to have YOU feel the struggles, to have YOU beat that guy who could have been beaten in a cutscene, to have YOU experience and catch her or at least try to as more obstructions come everytime you do instead of flashbacks to that one moment you couldn't save her as would be done by many other video games as "cinematic experiences".and the music just adds to each experience and even though they told you any consequences, you were compelled by the urgency of the task and the music "CATCH HER"
That's a whole lot of emotion per bit.

Always makes me a bit during this and one of my favorite songs on the soundtrack. What makes this song even more devastating is that fact that when you catch her and it turns to day and you try to move he won't wake up. He wants to be there with his beloved and if that means he needs to stay there near the campfire so be it so you have to force him awake.
... it's odd. Never once in my playthrough did I let her fall. Despite the enemies. Despite the frustration of the previous levels. Despite not knowing what happened to shield knight at first. I felt morally obligated to catch her. But why? Because this game makes YOU Shovel Knight. I don't know how, but this game made me feel like *I* had to catch her. Once, I almost let her fall. Swarmed with enemies and desperate to survive, I accidentally used the horn to clear some out. My heart sank as Shield Knight suddenly appeared. The horn caused me to go above her. I thought I wouldn't fall fast enough to catch her. But I did.
Something about the scene after is also saddening. Shovel Knight is still asleep. You try to make him move, but he refuses. He wants to be there. With Shield Knight. No matter what, unless you force him to jump, he will not wake up. Every time after a dream sequence, I always made shovel Knight frantically look around, before slowly putting out the embers and walking away.
This game is beautiful. I already knew I had my money's worth when I heard the first level's song. May this game forever be remembered. May Shovel Knight, and heck, maybe Plague Knight, Specter Knight, King Knight, and Shield Knight appear one day in Smash Bros. Remember this masterpiece forever. It set a bar that I don't think any platformer is going to be able to hit in a while.

Man, this is one of the strongest 'lost companion' stories i've ever seen in a game, and it does it with barely any dialogue at all. Making the player fight off the hordes of enemies in his dreams to try in vain to catch the endlessly falling Shield Knight makes the final moment where they're reunited feel very special. You really feel Shovel Knight's devotion to her and it feels fantastic to finally catch her for real

Really shows what you care about in these scenes...the loads of gems dropped by the enemies you slay, or the main goal of the entire story, rescuing a friend
That part in the beginning really gets me. You can feel by just listening that Shovel Knight is mourning to no end. You can tell how badly he's hurt on the inside. The will of a broken heart

you play the game and you just try to defeat the bosses, but once it gets to this part, you REALLY BLOODY GIVE IT YOUR BEST SHOT. this is a sign of a great game. a game that makes you give your all into it, where it counts.

This game is amazing. The Controls were tight, the levels were well made, it had secrets hidden all through out (some of which required skill to get to), it had an amazing story and graphics as well as amazing music to go along with it. This was a game that sounded stupid, but then I actually played it and it blew my mind. It's games like this that prove that not all indies suck and deserve a chance

Weirdest bonus stages I've ever played.
I remember the first time I failed to catch Shield Knight.
I deleted that entire save game and lost several hours of progress.
But ever since then, I've never failed to catch her.

What I actually like to do is the first time, just stand there and let her fall, symbolizing that Shovel Knight is struggling with doubt, fearing that he may not be able to save her. The second time, he accidentally lets her fall while fighting enemies off, symbolizing that he's afraid that even if he gives it his all, he may still fail. Then the third time, he puts his doubts aside and resolves to save her no matter what and catches her. Then when it actually happens, he does catch her.
Also, does anyone else jump into the air to catch Shield Knight? I found that that made the moment a little more emotionally intense.

I think there is a something special about older 8-16bit games. Until now I didn't know what it was. And it hit me, these games are like interactive books. You use YOUR imagination to fill the gaps. Something shinny graphics will never do. Shinny graphics don't let you imagine anything. Shinny graphics dictate what you see. The imagination is repressed. Thus it's less personal.

I missed her the third time this happened and I still feel torn up about it...
The first time I didn't catch her I deleted my save. It was after the first level though.
I accidentally skipped the first dream sequence in one of my playthroughs. Still haunts me.
I didn't catch her after the first enchantress fight to get some useless, vacuous bags of money. Still feel like a piece of shit because of that.

this is a master class on good theming. You have a motif that is already introduced and give it a heavier backing to give both uses of the motif more depth and change the tone. the first one is triumphant, the second is more beautiful and daunting.

Every time, every damn time, this song and its sequence makes me want to cry, and I just don't know why those moments evoque such an amount of feelings.
Amazing song and truly brings 8-bit tears to the eyes. But quick little tip, using the horn during the dream sequence will instantly kill any enemies nearby. Not only making it easier to catch her, but awarding you with TONS of gold. Now I will continue to listen to this gem in peace.
I asked a friend of mine if he could arrange a cover for me. But he replied no. "I cannot make this any better than it is" I was kind of dissappointed at first I thought like he was being kind of an ass to me because he normally does do any cover I task of him. He really does do his best to learn anything and stuff. But now I fully agree. this couldn't be made any better.

In shovel knight showdown we find out that before the mirror of fate went wackadoo shovel knight used to lash out at the apparitions of shield knight because we wished to not be tormented by her image anymore, but upon meeting her again in the mirror he started trying to save her again
