    Wow that's a beautiful set. G scale is something that I'd like to do for a garden railroad when I get a house. LGB is a very good brand. I like the clicking of the track it gives.

    I've been collecting G scale for nearly 30 years, welcome aboard!
    Of my 9 locomotives, only 2 of them have that motor idle/siding switch. It's nice to see it's now a feature in starter sets as well.
    The most common entry point for G scale is the iconic Stainz 0-4-0 starter set (it's literally the LGB logo), so it's nice to see a 2-4-0 tender for once.
    You can imagine the space a G scale santa fe super chief or a 2-6-0 steam loco take up (and the turn radius clearance needed, lol).

      All LGB is designed to run on tight starter set curves. Piko G scale for the most part too.

      @@raymondleggs5508 Right, but the overhang of some models (bachmann and aristocraft) running on those radius 1 curves becomes a problem in a limited space, or turning toward parallel tracks.

    Ah once you've caught the g scale bug you're never getting rid of it. 😂
    Yes LGB locos have a switch in the cab. I believe its main purpose is to have locos on static display in a siding while you have other locos are running on the same track as the points aren't isolated on analogue setups at least. Don't worry you're not the only one, the amount of people that have come with their loco needing repairs saying their loco has stopped running and they've just accidentally knocked the switch to off 😂

      You are correct.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'm glad I'm not the only one to make this mistake. Is the switch just for parking locomotives on DC lines? In terms of the G scale bug I'm already temped to order some extra track.

    • @legiontheatregroup
      @legiontheatregroup 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, it’s an analog way to have a locomotive sitting idle on a siding with current to the track while another locomotive is running on the main line. I’ve had G scale trains for about 35 years now, starting with Bachmann. They require a lot of space if used indoors but I’ve had success building an operating shelf layout up near the ceiling. I didn’t have space for a full circle but one of the manufacturers at the time (late 1980s) sold automatic reversing units you placed at either end. These worked electronically as the locomotive passed over a specific section of track.

    • @avlisk
      @avlisk 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a dozen years experience with some G gauge. I really like the USA Trains (Charles Ro) product, 1:29 "A" scale, if you want to do "standard" gauge in large scale. It's very robust and well detailed. Actual standard gauge is 1:32, and there's some product, but not nearly as much as 1:29, and the slightly too narrow gauge isn't noticeable. (Think OO running on HO track as analogous.) There are a few narrow gauge scales to choose from, but my experience with those is too meager to comment, other than LGB has a good reputation for quality. The only other thing I will mention is that if you run it outside, don't do DC. Keeping the rail clean is a nightmare. Use battery power. I've installed Revolution (which I bought from Reindeer Pass online) and been very very happy with it.

    First g scale locomotive and set i ever had, she still runs excellent, the switch on the back has 3 postions everything off, motor off/lights smoke on, everything on. I find it very nice because it allows one to "park" the locomotive on live track without isolated track circuits, and then also for photography, you can have lights and sound if applicable which can be great for timed exposures

    LGB engines usually have that switch so you can choose between running the drive motors, not giving power to the engine at all, or just turn on the lights (which was your case here). It is very useful especially when you want to run multiple trains by using the same power pack.

    If you haven't been told yet, 0= Totally off, 1= Lights only (no motor) 3= Full operation. Originally a 3 position switch in the loco. Also the LGB brand models are made of a space age plastic to resist UV light (breaks down plastic). This plastic cannot be glued by normal plastic glues. Most plastic bodies & roofs are molded in color. You may add people & lights to the passenger cars. Screw sockets provided in the roof which carefully snaps &/or combo of, unscrews off. There are metal wheels available, with or without track power pickup, & yes expensive for power pickup but are ball bearing wheels. I recommend metal wheels as this helps a lot to promote cleaner track for power pickup. When adding lights you may over tax the starter set power pack , good up to 1amp. The circle of track is prefect under a Xmas tree.
    P.S. I'm in an out door garden railway club. They do run in fowl weather & on snow plowed tracks. Have fun!

    I'm wonder if the switch in the cab is to park the locomotive and run the smoke unit while turning off the motor. The engine may have a smoke unit (something to check for). This method would be similar to the Lionel postwar engines parking the E unit in neutral to make the smoke and whistle run without moving the engines.

    Edit: i showed my mom cause it looked familiar to me and she said that was the same train set she tired to win for me when i was 10 but missed by one number, i think she said it was B13 and someone else got it before she could vet the bingo

    You'll have fun with the G-Scale set 🙂 I'm not a fan of LGB as the Bachmann G-Scale is more realistic, and they have knuckle couplers not Hook & Loop style. 🙂 I have the Bachmann G-Scale 10 wheelers which look and sound like a real steam engine without DCC. 🙂 95% of my 'stuff' came from Ebay 🙂

    You should get a Bachmann G scale 4-6-0, that's a locomotive I'd like to have if I ever get into G scale

    FYI, allot of g-scale engines have a motor lockout switch, probably as a static display or the fact block use is rare in g

    I know people who have 3d printed complete rolling stock in G scale. The only things not printed were screws and springs for the trucks and couplers

    You know what would be very interesting? If they actually build a new exhibit at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum featuring engines from different countries around the world. Basically, it would be known as The International Shed. If I were to guess what British engines would be on display there, I would pick: an LMS Black 5, a GWR Trojan, and a BR 2MT tender engine.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an excellent idea.

    • @adammiranda357
      @adammiranda357 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SMTMainline if that were to happen, I think they would paint the Black 5 and the Trojan Apple Green so that they can resemble Henry and Percy in order to bring in little kids(even though Thomas is supposed to be for all ages, not just for kids.)

    I think the little switch in the cab is an on and off power button. But I'm just guessing.

    I always thought that the proportions of g scale are odd because like why are certain engines smaller & most diesels are smaller than the steam locomotives.

    Hi Harrison. I think the box says it has lights and smoke. I’ll bet the switch turns the smoke unit on/off. Maybe there’s a safety interlock so the motor won’t run unless the smoke unit has enough oil in it? Or maybe it’s just a switch to disconnect the motor so you can park it on a siding with the headlight on. Should be in the manual.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you're right. I've seen similar switches to disable smoke units on HO locomotives but never one that stops the motor from starting.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That must be it. The ability to disable the motor is a feature I haven't seen until now.
