- On this special interview, I have the great pleasure of talking with Dr. Meryll Pampolina, an emergency medicine physician at University of Missouri Kansas City and alumni of the 6-year BA/MD program at UMKC. Yes you heard that right, SIX YEARS ONLY. I thought finishing your bachelor's degree in 3 years was impressive but to do it in 2 and go straight into medical school is not for the faint of heart. In this interview, Dr. Pampolina outlines the general structure of the UMKC 6 Year BA/MD program then shares her experience during the program both as a student, and now as a full emergency medicine attending physician. I have a few friends who went to UMKC, half did the 6 year program. All extremely smart. Top of their high schools. All of them came from very wealthy families and all their parents were physicians of some sort of specialty. You gotta be the top of the top for this.
Hello, I’m actually in my second year of the program. While it’s true we have a lot of students from well off families, I know many who are from diverse backgrounds, I myself came from a rural middle class background. So it can be a factor, but shouldn’t discourage anybody from applying.
@@cooperbassham650 there’s definitely people who are outliers, but take a pole of all your class mates and you’ll see how many come from the upper middle class, and/or have parents as physicians. Definitely shouldn’t deter you from applying, but one should always play the numbers as well, all I’m saying.

Love the content! I’ve been a nurse since I was 19 and am strongly considering going to medical school! I’m just now transferring to the ICU but after I’ve done that for a bit, I am leaning towards possibly doing an accelerated MD program… so keep this info coming 👍🏻
This is by far the most interesting video. I think this is how medical schools should be. Many other countries follow a similar structure.

I agree that it’s beneficial in some ways and in some circumstances, but it also creates a barrier to entry in the field. Having a mix of these programs and traditional medical schools allows students to explore higher level science before making such an enormous commitment.
I’m also concerned about the lack of a liberal arts education for potential professionals. Doctors are citizens who need to understand the basics of political science, media literacy, compositional writing, and economics.
Moreover, if all of our medical schools were comprised of 19-year-olds who’ve been working to become doctors since they were in kindergarten, we’d all but kill innovation. The best med schools in the country know this, and admit Rhodes scholars, college athletes, Olympians, classical musicians, authors, scientists, policy makers - not in spite of these feats, but because they make for more well-rounded humans who can bring different experiences and ideas to the field. We don’t innovate medicine by turning teenagers into physicians.

Yes! UMKC represent!!!
this 6 year undergraduate + postgrad med is really similar to the direct medicine entry pathways in australia! most of these guaranteed pathways are 6 years long, 7 years is really rare for these guaranteed spots. there is even a 5-year degree only in postgrad med that accepts high school students, so they don't do an undergraduate degree :o but obviously, all of these spots are really sought after by high school graduates, so you have to be at the very top to be selected - after ucat score (like mcat, but aus + uk) and interviews
This is how it works for many UK medical schools - years 1-2 preclinical 3rd year deep into a certain topic such as pharmacology and then 4-6 clinical years. Although we get clinical experience in years 1 and 2
honestly makes a lot more sense than the US system many times...

be confident. don't think yourself down. An occasional patient may react differently, but majority won't. It won't matter, if your mind does not make too much of it.
It's basically how it works in my country, every Med school is 6 years long, like a "biology" + medicine program. I'm from Brazil

I am 6 ft tall, 27 yo, and I still get treated like a child in my profession. There are simply people who feel like using age to exert social influence. You will still experience it in your 30s, 40s, etc. Just in different ways. Just focus on delivering the best care you can!

I personally feel like these programs can be good but I also know many people in high school who said they wanted to be doctors but changed their minds in undergrad. Additionally, as an admissions officer, I wouldn’t feel confident basically giving a high schooler a spot in a medical school class no matter how qualified they are. Personally, I think most people should do some adulting before they go to medical school.
That’s a fair point, it’s taken me 3 years at community college to figure out I want to be a neurologist. I spent the first 1.5 years undecided and the past 1.5 years in biomedical engineering
A lot of other people don't change their minds and have to go through so many hoops to get into medical school. Other countries do it this way and it's fine. Is also going to college anyway to get any kind of bachelor's degree + prereqs more "adulting"? People grow up regardless. Why have people go the PA or NP route that also takes about 6 years when there can be more people with an entire medical education?
@@theshinythings123 I have noticed other country’s high school education is far more rigorous. Also high school education in the US is very variable, in some regions of the US it’s very easy to do well in high school. If I was an admissions officer, I would never trust high school grades vs. college grades as well. Plus, I don’t know what clinical experiences a high schooler could have that would make me think they know for sure they want to be a physician.

Yes, this. Brain development isn’t complete until 25, and yet we make students choose entire career paths 6-7 years earlier.
Most high schoolers don’t have the experience with rigorous science coursework to make an informed career decision during their senior year of high school. In fact, most high schoolers don’t even know the range of careers that exist.
And what happens to the kids who get to college, distance from mom and dad, immerse themselves in a science-only curriculum, and change their minds a semester or a year in?
In greece we have a 6 year programm too at which you start with preclinical courses at 1st and 2nd year (physiology, Anatomy etc) then year 3 pharmacology pathophysiology and those kinds of courses with 2 clinical based courses then in my med school (which is not the same with the others in greece in terms of school programm) we have 4th year all clinical courses then years 5th and 6th year full exposure to university hospital clinics with no other courses just the programm of the clinic

Can some explain how this accelerated path is different from what we do at the UK. Where you start medical school at 18 and do medicine at uni for 5-6 yrs then become foundation 1,2 etc doctor.
I think it’s different because you also get a bachelors degree during the first 2.5 years she was talking about, from my understanding you guys are essentially just studying med school material for the whole time you’re there

hey this is pretty random but what’s your opinion on research style med schools vs primary care med schools ? and what type is yours? do you see urself being a primary care physician or specializing ?
personally i would prefer a school that has the best of both worlds because you typically don't know for sure if you're going into primary care until near the end of med school. personally i wanted to keep all my doors open for specialties and my school is really good at both research (in case i want to do a competitive specialty) and matching primary care. definitely important to consider how many options your school gives you when you choose one!

not too sure actually, i know a lot of accelerated programs don't give you a choice of major so it is most likely a biology or molecular biology major if i had to guess

I'm a med student from Israel and actually here most of our med schools are a 6 years programs (3 y. Pre-clinicals that include a BA and another 3 clinicals) only a few schools here offer a 4 year program for people with a BA and it was really weird for me at first to find out that we are actually different from anywhere else 😅

in south africa you can start med school from 18. You dont need to do a bachelors before medschool,and its also 6 years this side
