Problem is as a one off they made one of the best balads in their time and it became a huge hit (more than words). And their other material is a bit more... "extreme"? That probably was an issue for them to become huge.
Same thing happened with Mr. Big and 'To Be With You'...a full-on hard rock band, but wrongly typecast by a mega ballad hit. Between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan Mr. Big had more musical firepower than anyone since Dave Lee Roth's 'Eat Em And Smile'-era band, but they got known for a sappy ballad and that was it. And oh yeah, Nuno is just amazing. I was lucky enough to catch Extreme on the 'Pornograffiti' tour in the Bristol Bierkeller, UK, and they were just a force of nature; note perfect down from the shred-tacular solos all the way to legit four-part vocal harmonies.
Jason Becker's work on "Its Showtime" with DLR is another apex rock guitar solo. I consider it more "extreme" as Becker was in the beginning stages of ALS when he recorded it.
@@rogerdat7807I have to say that the “It’s Showtime” is more of an extreme solo, it was beyond extreme. Jason Becker was so extreme at playing that it blew my mind. If you ever hear what he did with “Hot For Teacher” by Van Halen in a demo that he actually sent to David Lee Roth before he got the job with Dave, it would blow your mind too. Jason was faster than Yngwie and hit more notes too. Nuno, is really incredible though, they should have continued with “HE-MAN Woman hater” in this video, that solo is even more incredible than “Get the funk out”.
Wow. Nuno makes it look so easy. I am humbled by his greatness. The gorgeous crunchy tone he gets and the clarity of his legato are signs of a true master.
I used to love these guys when I was a kid. Now years later their all still in great shape and can play as good as ever. Now that demands respect! Nuno is freakin' EPIC!
I saw Extreme when they were still a bar band. They did a Van Halen set that was impressive. Nuno doesn't hide from his influences, but he takes a step further. Extreme is one of the best live bands out there. The vocal harmonies are incredible. See them if you get a chance.

To put him above the rest would be insane. There's been too many incredible guitarists to say that a single one is the best. However, I do remember when I first listened to Pornograffitti. I'm a decent guitarist, and the first words out of my mouth was, "who the hell is this cat?" By the way, my "favorite" all-time great guitarist (I have so many) is Neil Schon. You have to listen to a lot of his solo work to get an appreciation of how great he really is. Not many realize that Neil is probably one of the best "blues" players in the world!
